Street artist Mr. Brainwash likes to go big, and since he calls L.A. home, this is where he is set to launch what is being called "his largest and most ambitious Los Angeles exhibition to date." With an as-yet unspecified "late October" opening, Mr. Brainwash (aka Thierry Guetta) will include his work, and the work of invited and select global artists in "Art Show 2011."

8 Months + $150 in House Paint = Stunning Mural by 94-Year-Old Artist
94-year-old Mid-City artist Erma Winfield has finally completed a 40-foot mural that depicts the many "seasons" of her life. It took eight months of daily work, $150 worth of exterior house paint, some good-natured ribbing from friends and willing neighbors, but the mural is now a welcome addition to Spalding Avenue, according to the LA Times.
New Soviet Art Doc Premieres at the Aero
The Desert of Forbidden Art marked its Los Angeles premiere on Thursday night at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The doc tells the story of Igor Savitsky's quest to save avant-garde Russian art from Soviet censors and build a now legendary museum to house it in backwater Nukus, Uzbekistan. Celebrity narrators include Sally Field, Ben Kingsely, and Ed Asner, who ably portray the story's principals.

Photos: Billboards Turn into Art Around Town
As mentioned in December, February through the end of March is host of a great project that takes billboards back from corporations and gives them to artists. “In How Many Billboards?, the streets of Los Angeles become the walls of the exhibition, and the city itself becomes a large museum,” explained Kimberli Meyer, Director of the MAK Center and initiator and co-curator of the exhibition, when the project was announced.

Index: Conceptualism in California
This Sunday marks the opening of “Index: Conceptualism in California from the Permanent Collection,” an exhibition that surveys the evolution and scope of conceptual art by artists who have lived and worked in California. Curated by MOCA Curator Philipp Kaiser and Curatorial Assistant Corrina Peipon, the exhibition highlights over 60 artists and more than 200 works including collage, drawing, film, installation, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video.
