Courtney Love's last words to Kurt Cobain seem to capture our feelings towards the whole Anaheim Angels vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim fracas perfectly. For those of you not keeping up with petty sports politics, Angels owner Arte Moreno is being sued by the City of Anaheim for changing the team's name. The city claims that by calling the team "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" he is violating the terms of his stadium lease.
"Are you there, are you there, are you f*cking anywhere? Are you an angel now? F*ck you."
West Champs
Congratulations to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, on clinching the AL West. While we at LAist admit to a strong Dodger bias, and changing the team name didn't make us think the Angels were an LA team, we acknowledge them as a SoCal team. And we can't help but admire the work that Arte Moreno has done.
Heaven on Earth
But the Los Angeles of Anaheim team made a bold statement this weekend, sweeping the Dodgers, widening their first place lead, and have established themselves as today's Los Angeles bandwagon team.
Signed
Not only did they get Jered Weaver signed, but they got him and agent Scott Boras to acquiesce to their lower $4 million minor league offer.
Sign, Dammit
This represents a colossal failure by the Angels, Weaver, and Weaver's agent Scott Boras. The idea that a pitcher coming out of college is worth $6 million before he's ever played a minor league game is absurd. Highly touted pitching prospects have a lousy record of success, even those who went to college. Sometimes you strike gold with a Mark Prior, but more often than not, you're lucky if the guy ever makes your rotation. Boras' outrageous contract demands are only doing further damage to young Weaver. He's only now getting an opportunity to play on the nondescript Camden Riversharks of the Independent Atlantic League.
LA's Team
Mayor-Elect Antonio Villaraigosa made the perfectly clear on Friday night, throwing out the first pitch wearing Dodger blue.
Revenge of the Also Rans
The Lakers continue to flounder, after losing 110-101 to the Clippers, dangerously falling out of the 8th playoff position.
Back Home Again, Sort of
But California Angels never quite worked, and who wants to be called the Anaheim Angels?
The Wherever Angels of Whatever
Apparently, the language in the Angels' lease agreement with the city of Anaheim is ambiguous enough that the team could come up with a compromise name of sorts. The contract states that "Anaheim" must be in the team name, but it doesn't explicitly force the team to be called the "Anaheim Angels." So, Arte Moreno could call his team the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" or even "The Los Angeles Angels, a team of really great players who happen to play their games in a city we grudgingly acknowledge is called Anaheim," says one law professor.
What's in a Name?
This was only a matter of time. With Arte Moreno proving to be an owner who understands winning, the Dodgers need to protect their turf as much as possible. The Dodgers still dominate LA, so why allow anyone to infringe on their pseudo-monopoly?
No Longer Men of Troy
Granted, Glaus has been banged up recently, his performances are sometimes frustratingly inconsistent, his salary will probably be too high, and the Angels have Dallas McPherson waiting in the wings. But letting a player like Glaus go is always a risky proposition, even if it makes some sound business sense. Third basemen like Glaus don't come along everyday, and banking on a rookie to fill his shoes is no sure thing.
City of Dodgers
But while the Dodgers sport the third-best record in baseball, ESPN.com's Darren Rovell came out with an article pondering if the Angels had passed the Dodgers in LA. "Big Nasty" Joe McDonnell said as much on 710 AM recently.
City Without Angels
The battle for city naming rights wages on as Arte Moreno tries to renegotiate a stadium lease so his team can be called the "Los Angeles Angels." Orange County Angels fans have let their heavenly voices be heard. According to Angels communications VP, the team has received "less than a dozen e-mails" in opposition.
A Move Without Movement
They love LA too. Anaheim Angels owner Arte Moreno has been in discussions with Major League Baseball to change the team's name to the Los Angeles Angels.
Colon Cancer
Arte Moreno has been getting a lot of praise for opening up the checkbook this offseason, but teams like the Mets, Orioles, Rangers, and Dodgers could tell you that spending money does not always guarantee success. You have to spend wisely.
