When people find out I write about sports the question invariably comes up: what sport do you like the most? I always answer baseball which elicits strange looks. It’s as though they feel I’m strange because baseball is an old-timey sport that drags and is boring. After what happened on this final day of the baseball season, I hope people finally understand. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Matt Kemp's 40-40 Vision, Angels Death March, Simmonds Fag Watch

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2. The Dodgers sent a press release this afternoon that summarized Clayton Kershaw’s Cy Young season. With 21 wins, 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts, Kershaw will most likely become the third Dodger pitcher to win the Triple Crown with Dazzy Vance (1924) and Sandy Koufax (1963, 1965, 1966). more ›

The Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw and Gerardo Parra's Penis

The Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw and Gerardo Parra's Penis

From Southern California to Arizona, an odd celestial light was seen in the heavens. Perhaps this strange phenomenon is what caused the sixth inning outburst in the Dodgers’ 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. more ›

A Maddening Loss by the Dodgers

A Maddening Loss by the Dodgers

Self-immolation. Defenestration. As the clock kept ticking through pitching change after pitching change during the Dodgers’ 7-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, these thoughts creep into your head. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Prom Queens Galore Between Angels and Tigers

LAst Night's Action: Prom Queens Galore Between Angels and Tigers

It would have been nice to be able to discuss what a great pitching duel it was with Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander four outs away from a no-hitter. Unfortunately the actions of a few detracted from it all. more ›

Dodgers Shooting Blanks Against D-backs

Dodgers Shooting Blanks Against D-backs

As documented here the Dodgers need strong starting pitching in order to have any chance of winning a game. Dodger starters certainly have been doing their part recording seven consecutive quality starts. Unfortunately Ted Lilly (L, 3-4) couldn’t keep the streak going with a four-run second inning in the Dodgers 4-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. more ›

Dodgers Error Leads to Historic Loss

Dodgers Error Leads to Historic Loss

Dodgers Fend Off D-backs Comeback for Win

Dodgers Fend Off D-backs Comeback for Win

When you think about a postcard of a Dodger game, this one would not be included. Fielding gaffes by both teams and an acid-reflux ninth inning weren’t the most picturesque scenes, but the Dodgers hung on by a broken fingernail and starter Clayton Kershaw’s 11 strikeouts to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3. more ›

Dodgers Win Torre’s Farewell

The Dodgers ended a season full of missed potential on a high, celebratory note. This afternoon’s 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, while promoted as Fan Appreciation Day, ended up being much much more. Sure, it was the Dodger season’s final ballgame: Ted Lilly (10-12) dominated Arizona hitters for seven innings (1ER, 9K,) Hong-Chih Kuo saved his twelfth Dodger victory, and Matt Kemp’s two-run home run (his fifth home run in as many days) was the difference on the scoreboard. However, the day was more grand than box score facts. more ›

LAst Night's Action: UCLA Does What Was Expected of Them

LAst Night's Action: UCLA Does What Was Expected of Them

UCLA Bruins defeat Washington State Cougars 48-24. The final score made it look like it was an easy enough win for the Bruins, but it was anything but. The Bruins fell asleep allowing Wazzu to take a 28-20 lead in the third quarter. The offense finally woke up midway through the third quarter going on a 67-yard touchdown drive that took up four minutes and got the two-point conversion to tie the game. more ›

Billingsley and Kemp Raise Dodgers to Victory

Jamey Carroll really didn’t have much to do as an acting manager. With Chad Billingsley (W, 12-11) pitching a shutout after seven innings, the Dodgers went on to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks despite a bumpy eighth. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angels Pull It Out in Extras

LAst Night's Action: Angels Pull It Out in Extras

LA Angels defeat Texas Rangers 5-4 (11 innings). Even Fernando Rodney couldn’t get the Angels down. Staked to a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning, Rodney once again blew a save thanks to Bengie Molina’s single and an audacious double-steal. Juan Rivera came through in the top of the 11th inning with a solo homer. Torii Hunter gave the Angels the lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning, and Mitch Moreland responded with solo homers in the fifth and seven innings off of Angels’ starter Jered Weaver. Peter Bourjos’s sacrifice fly and Maicer Izturis’ single in the eighth inning gave the Angels the one-run advantage with Juan Rivera adding a solo shot in the ninth inning. more ›

Ely Shelled in Dodgers, Ausmus Loss

It was a game that meant nothing except for the individual players’ stats and egos. With Brad Ausmus acting as manager in a longtime Joe Torre tradition of having his players be managers at the end of the season in meaningless games, Dodgers’ starter John Ely got shelled to the tune of seven runs in the Dodgers 7-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodger Bullpen Blows Billingsley's Great Day

LAst Night's Action: Dodger Bullpen Blows Billingsley's Great Day

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. Chad Billingsley gave up a run while striking out 13 batters. Staked to a 4-1 lead thanks to Rod Barajas’ two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning, after Ronald Belisario got Augie Ojeda to ground out to start the bottom of the eighth, the combination of George Sherrill and Jonathan Broxton stunk up the joint. more ›

LAst Night's Action: John Ely Struck Down in Dodgers' Loss

LAst Night's Action: John Ely Struck Down in Dodgers' Loss

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-2. John Ely and the strike zone still aren’t seeing eye-to-eye with Ely allowing six walks to Diamondbacks’ hitters. After Stephen Drew scored on Tony Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to tie the game 1-1, Cole Gillespie gave the D-Backs the 4-1 lead with a three run homer off of Ely in the sixth inning. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers On Two Game Winning Streak

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers On Two Game Winning Streak

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Not one person can accuse Clayton Kershaw as being the reason the Dodgers are not in the playoffs. He flirted with another complete game shutout this month, but a single by Chris Johnson and a double by Tony Abreu that scored Johnson ended that. With nothing playoff related determined by the outcome of this game, the Dodgers played a lot of young guns and Trent Oeltjen rewarded them with an RBI triple in the third inning for the game’s first score. Jay Gibbons hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning after Andre Ethier led off the inning with his first triple of the season. more ›

Dramatic Dodgers Win Late (Again)

For the second game in a row, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks took a 0-0 ballgame into the 10th inning. That empty scoreboard lasted beyond the rare 14th Inning Stretch and didn't change until Garret Anderson singled home Matt Kemp in the bottom of that inning for a 1-0 Dodger victory, a sweep of the Diamondbacks, and the home team’s third straight walk-off victory in a row. more ›

Kemp Powers Dodgers Past D-Backs in Bonus Time

Neither the Dodgers’ nor the Arizona Diamondbacks’ offense could muster anything beyond a single for nine innings. But with one swing of the bat, Matt Kemp got the game’s only extra-base hit - a walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth inning off of reliever Juan Gutierrez for the Dodgers’ 1-0 win. “It was a great feeling, my first home run walk-off,” Kemp said. “Now I know how [Andre Ethier] feels when he hits all these home run walk-offs. It’s pretty exciting to do it for once in my life.” more ›

It's A Balk-Off at Dodger Stadium!

A memorable balk-off ending to the Dodgers’ Memorial Day game against the Arizona Diamondbacks had the Dodgers winning 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth. “We lucked out,” manager Joe Torre said. “We screwed up on the bases and get a stay of execution so to speak.” more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Sweep DBacks To Get Even

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Sweep DBacks To Get Even

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3. Triple Crown leading Andre Ethier had a rough kind of night despite hitting the leather off the ball. Unfortunately for the most part there was someone where the ball ended up. All except for in the fourth inning when he drew first blood with an opposite-field two-run homer... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Beat Down DBacks Bullpen

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 13-3. It didn’t look to be a rout. DBacks’ starter Dan Haren raised eyebrows everywhere when he struck out nine Dodgers in three innings. The Dodgers didn’t really care in the fourth inning when they... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Sweep Away the Jazz

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Sweep Away the Jazz

LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 111-96. After a first quarter where both teams felt each other out, the Lakers had enough and sealed off everything for the Jazz. Not one Jazz player entered the paint without being harassed, and all the passing lanes were closed off leading to a total of eight Jazz first-half turnovers... more ›

Ethier Comes Through Yet Again in Sloppy Game

Ethier Comes Through Yet Again in Sloppy Game

While the bullpen and defensive woes are not breaking news, the Dodgers offense capped by Andre Ethier’s tenth career walk off hit in the tenth inning gave the Dodgers the 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks and their first series win. more ›

Dodgers Fall 9-7 to Diamondbacks in 11 Despite Offense

Dodgers Fall 9-7 to Diamondbacks in 11 Despite Offense

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get By Kings Without Kobe

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get By Kings Without Kobe

LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 106-100. The penultimate game for the Lakers marked a new look for Ron Artest and DJ Mbenga. They bleached their domes seemingly to generate some amount of interest in the game. It worked for Mbenga who scored seven points and knocked down the only free throw. But in Kobe’s absence Pau Gasol led the way in the paint with 28 points and eight rebounds while Shannon Brown added 24 points. Sasha Vujacic continued to show he can still play scoring 13 points and being the defensive pest, however Jordan Farmar shut things down after straining his hammy in the first half. For the Kings rookie of the year candidate Tyreke Evans had ten points until he was thrown out of the game with back-to-back technical fouls in the third quarter for arguing a non-foul call which ended his season. The Lakers will head on the road to nowhere for one final game against the Clippers. more ›

Dodger Beat Diamondbacks Despite the Bullpen

Dodger Beat Diamondbacks Despite the Bullpen

“We’re 1-1 in Opening Day games this season,” Joe Torre said before the game. That’s a small consolation considering they lie in the cellar of the NL West early in the season with a 2-4 record. While they have the pop, the pitching and defense have clearly let the Dodgers down. Their starting pitching ERA is 4.96 and bullpen ERA is 5.68, sixth worst in the Majors. In addition their fielding percentage is .964 the second worst in the Majors. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Pirates Outpower Dodgers

LAst Night's Action: Pirates Outpower Dodgers

Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0) defeat LA Dodgers (0-1) 11-5. Vicente Padilla’s and George Sherrill’s bad spring extended into the first game of the regular season as the Dodgers were shelled by the Pirates in a sunny Pittsburgh. Pirate’s right fielder Garrett Jones feasted on Padilla hitting two homers in his first two at-bats: the first with Akinori Iwamura on first in the first inning that landed in the Allegheny River to tie the game at 2-2... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Squeak Through

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Squeak Through

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4. Chad Billingsley got racked for four runs on eight hits and three walks in the six innings he pitched against the DBacks. In that time the Dodgers managed to score a run in the first inning thanks to Andre Ethier's double. But after that, they tied a franchise record by hitting into five double plays. But in the eighth inning they patched together six singles and a walk to score four runs against three separate pitchers while managing to avoid the double play. While it was a great come from behind victory for the Blue, it by no means alleviates concerns of their inconsistent offense. more ›
