LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Squeak Through

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4. Chad Billingsley got racked for four runs on eight hits and three walks in the six innings he pitched against the DBacks. In that time the Dodgers managed to score a run in the first inning thanks to Andre Ethier's double. But after that, they tied a franchise record by hitting into five double plays. But in the eighth inning they patched together six singles and a walk to score four runs against three separate pitchers while managing to avoid the double play. While it was a great come from behind victory for the Blue, it by no means alleviates concerns of their inconsistent offense.

The New Kids Are Alright, Dodgers Rope Snakes

The Los Angeles Dodgers (80-55) 4-2 victory charge over the Arizona Diamondbacks (61-74) was led by two players who started the week on other teams. Jon Garland (9-11,) the game’s winning pitcher, came to Dodgers Stadium on Monday as an Arizona Diamondback. Last week, Ronnie Belliard, whose 3 RBIs accounted for 75% of the Dodgers' offense, was a Washington National. LA-native Garland, pitched seven economical innings. The newest Dodger hurler allowed two runs (both earned,) while letting up five hits, and walking one of his old teammates.

LAst Night's Action: Hernandez Overwhelms Kazmir

Seattle Mariners defeat LA Angels 3-0. Scott Kazmir, looking to impress his new team in his first outing, did an admirable job through six innings pitching shut out ball. However in the seventh inning he led the inning off by walking Mike Sweeney. After Adrian Beltre flew out to center, Bill Hall doubled scoring Sweeney ending Kazmir's night. Sweeney ended up scoring in the next at-bat when stealing third catcher Mike Napoli made a throwing error. Felix Hernandez however was lights out pitching eight innings while giving up only four hits and three walks. Although King Felix had runners on the basepads all day, he was able to get out of every jam. The Angels lost two of three games in this series and now head over to Kansas City.

Dodgers Ineffective against Snakes

The Dodgers offense was thoroughly stymied in their 4-1 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley and DBacks starter Max Scherzer had a nice pitchers’ duel going. Both were shutting out the opposing team while Billingsley went one better - a perfect game through four innings. Then the fifth inning happened which was an inning sooner than his usual sixth inning collapse.

Ethier Came To Save the Day

Andre Ethier was the savior for the Dodgers 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Air Force Appreciation Night, the Dodgers bullpen laid a stink egg for the second consecutive night. Right fielder Andre Ethier willed the Dodgers to victory twice. First with the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, Ethier worked a bases loaded walk to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Then in the top of the eighth and stole a two-run homer in off of first baseman Brandon Allen to end the inning.

Nothing to See Here

Changes are a brewing at Dodger Stadium. Everyone knows of the trades for starter Jon Garland and new bench warmer and professional hitter extraordinaire Jim Thome. In addition September 1 bring the call ups from the minors: outfielder Jason Repko, catcher AJ Ellis and pitcher Scott Elbert.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win and Lose

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-3 (10). Yeah the Dodgers lost the game. The newest Dodger as of 9:00 pm Ronnie Belliard made a great impression with the fans by hitting a solo homer in his first at-bat. Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning. But the DBacks would come back to win it.

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0. For the second straight night James Loney was the hero for the Dodgers. Leading off the sixth inning he hit a triple past the glove of a diving left fielder Gerardo Parra and came home on Casey Blake's sacrifice fly to Parra. Meanwhile Chad Billingsley and the relievers did their job to keep the DBacks off the scoreboard. Bills struck out nine in six innings of work while closer Jonathan Broxton came in wanting to blow away the DBacks hitters. His last pitch was a 100 mph fastball to Ryan Roberts that was swung on and missed badly. The Dodgers are now 37-18 for the season with a 9 1/2 game lead in the NL West and a four game lead for the best record in baseball. The second place team in baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, will make their roost here starting tonight for a four game series.

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5. Going into the game everyone knew what the Dodgers game plan would be: wait out Dan Haren, hope the game doesn't get out of hand and pounce on the decimated bullpen. Haren went seven innings giving up only one run on two hits. He made the Dodgers look more like the Nati(o)nals. But he gave way to Tony Pena in the seventh inning and the Dodgers pounced. Matt Kemp led off with a single. With two outs, the Dodgers did their damage. Trailing 5-2, Loney cleared the bases with a double tying the game off of Daniel Schlereth (yes, the Big Stink's son). Casey Blake singled Loney home giving the Dodgers the lead. Jonathan Broxton used 15 pitches to get the DBacks out in the ninth. As SI's Jon Heyman tweeted, "anyone who doesnt believe in dodger magic isnt watching now."

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 3-2. Hiroki Kuroda did a good job in his first start since opening day going five innings giving up two runs. But DBacks starter Billy Buckner (not to be confused with World Series goat Bill Buckner) was better shutting out the Dodgers in six innings. The Dodgers relievers didn't help themselves with Cory Wade throwing three wild pitches and Brent Leach throwing two wild ones that would have made Mitch Williams smiled. The Dodgers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't muster anything more. I guess getting back to LA from Chicago at 4 am doesn't help things any.

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Manny did the hat dance in left field. Folklorico dancers did their thing between innings. On this Cinco de Mayo, the Dodgers etched their names in the history books tying the 1911 Detroit Tigers for consecutive home wins to start the season at 12-0. Ole Droopy Jeff Weaver on his second tour with the Dodgers pitched a good game giving up only one run on five hits in five innings pitched. The Dodgers were gifted all three of their runs in the first inning thanks to two DBack errors. While DBacks starter Max Scherzer pitched a good game, yet again his offense gave him no run support allowing him to fall to 0-3 with a very respectable 3.38 ERA. The Dodgers now look to continue their home dominance with a two game series against the awful pitching of the Washington Nationals.

Houston Rockets defeat LA Lakers 100-92. Well that didn't go as planned did it? The Lakers were outplayed by the Rockets from tip off and never seemed to wake up. With Houston getting battered with Shane Battier getting stitches on his forehead thanks to Sasha Vujacic in the first quarter and Yao Ming going down after bumping knees with Kobe Bryant in the fourth, they kept with their game plan making the Lakers uncomfortable. The Lakers helped out taking awful shots going 2-for-18 from three-point land. Lamar Odom played pretty well but never seemed to have the ball scoring nine points with five rebounds. Kobe Bryant scored 32 points on 14-for-31 shooting. I wasn't counting on this one being the game the Lakers lost when I predicted the Lakers to win by five. Hopefully there will be no repeat of this game.

According to Dodgers.com, the Dodgers have signed second baseman free agent Orlando Hudson to a one-year incentive laden deal. The deal has a base salary of $3.4 million with an additional $4.6 million in incentives with the Dodgers also giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a first-round draft pick in the upcoming draft. Hudson will be taking over second base for the retiring Jeff Kent. Where this puts Blake DeWitt is still unknown. Hudson is a three time Gold Glove winner and a 2007 All Star with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Dodgers have officially won the NL West! The Dodgers win! The Dodgers win! Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee DODGERS WIN! Excuse us while we prepare our crow pie.

This is finally it... maybe. The Dodger's weekend showdown against the Arizona Diamondbacks could determine who gets into the post-season and who is left out.

This is a familiar road all Dodger fans have been down.

LA Angels defeat NY Yankees 12-6. The Angels continue to roll. This time they used three Earl Weavers hit by Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera and Vladimir Guerrero to put the beating on the Yanks. Jon Garland had a good outing for the Angels going six plus innings giving up three runs on seven hits. While Darren O’Day made the game more interesting than it needed to giving up three runs in the ninth, Jose Arredondo got things back under control getting the last three batters out.

LA Angels over Boston Red Sox 7-5. The Angels crushed Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka to the tune of six runs on seven hits in five plus innings. The small ball team went big ball as Casey Kotchman hit a two-run homer and Torii Hunter hit an Earl Weaver to account for five of the six runs in that fateful sixth inning. The Angels relievers did just enough to get the win for Jered Weaver who went 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs on six hits and three walks. Francisco Rodriguez despite giving up a solo homer to Manny Ramirez notched his 44th save of the season. The Angels have now defeated the Red Sox six consecutive times, the best record and best road record in baseball.

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5. While their ninth inning rally eventually stalled on Matt Kemp's pop fly to right field Saturday night, the Dodgers made sure their comeback Sunday afternoon down 4-1 in the ninth inning would not be stopped. In an almost identical situation as Saturday night Matt Kemp came to the plate with a runner on first and two outs in the ninth trailing 4-3, Kemp stayed patient at the plate until he found a pitch he liked. He promptly hit the ball to the left center gap for an RBI double to tie the game. He would score on Andre Ethier's RBI triple for the go-ahead run. This was only the second time this season the Dodgers had won a game when trailing going into the ninth, and if the Dodgers go on to win the division this game will surely be looked at as a turning point in their season.

LA Angels defeat Boston Red Sox 11-3. The Angels came out of the All Star Break making a statement. To everyone who questioned their offense, myself included, they responded by scoring 11 runs on 14 hits. Now the question remains if they can be consistent with their hitting. Angel's starter John Lackey notched his 1000th strikeout and gave up only three runs on five hits in his seven innings. The Angels have now won three of four against the Red Sox this season including two earlier this season at Fenway and now look to be in good shape for the postseason.

LA Dodgers (14-13) defeat Florida Marlins (15-12) 13-1. The Dodgers are an offensive juggernaut on a five-game winning streak. Seriously. Manager Joe Torre made the unprecedented move to use the same lineup two nights in a row, and the Dodgers rewarded him. Rafael Furcal had a career-high five hit game, Russell Martin hit a solo homer in the second inning to lead the scoring and James Loney and Blake DeWitt hit bases-clearing triples in the seventh and eighth innings to blow out the young Marlins. And by the way, Chad Billingsley (1-4) got his first win going seven innings scattering three hits with one earned run and eight strikeouts. The Dodgers had only one five-game winning streak last season.

Arizona Diamondbacks (16-6) defeat LA Dodgers (9-13) 6-4. The good news: the Dodgers scored more than one run. The bad news: the Dodgers still lost. Chad Billingsley (0-4) started off shakily but eventually struck out six of eight consecutive batters. Jeff Kent and Joe Torre were ejected from the game in the top of the ninth for arguing a blown call in the eighth inning when second base umpire Andy Fletcher said Kent was off the base when trying to record an out at second.

LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 122-107. Kobe Bryant showed his MVP colors scoring 49 points to go along with 10 assists. Despite that, the Lakers are starting to play with fire. With a defense as porous as a sieve and complacency of taking bad perimeter shots against a weak zone, the Lakers got away with one. True the Lakers got the win, but it should have been a more dominant showing. It didn't help Lamar Odom scored only four points sitting out most of the second half due to foul trouble. While it might not affect them in this series, these mental lapses can cost them in the second round series against the Utah Jazz. The Lakers lead the series against the Nuggets 2-0.

LA Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 9-5. Mike Napoli hits his first grand slam in the second inning to get things rolling for the Angels. They didn't need to rely on a closer this time. But I'm sorta pissed at them since because of them the Dodgers game was blacked out on MLB.tv.

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 10-5. The Dodgers need to rely on their pitching because they are not a great offensive club. When the pitching goes south, so goes the Dodgers. Monday night Esteban Loaiza had a bad outing. Tonight it was Chad Billingsley's turn. 2 2/3 innings, five runs and five hits just will not cut it. Oh, and odds are we won't see another hit from Andruw Jones until July.

Kansas Jayhawks over Memphis Tigers 75-68 (OT). The Jayhawks were down nine with 2:12 left to go in regulation to tie it on a Mario Chalmers three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to go. Kansas shut down Memphis in overtime to win their third National Championship, their first since 1988.

Your resident gay-bashing gay sports blogger here amped up for the start of the baseball postseason! And seeing how the regular season ended Monday night in the fabulous game that sent the Padres packing, this should be an exciting postseason.

Last night's playoff game to see who would go to the playoffs was really great.

Yesterday's Dodger game was worth the long drive and the unbelievable heat and even the helmet sundae fiasco. All of the elements of a great game were there: Randy Johnson was starting (against Randy Wolf for a Randy vs. Randy battle which made me giggle), Martin hit a 2 run home run in the 1st inning which made the rest of the game seem easy, every Dodger in the starting lineup made it on...

On the heels of taking two games out of three from the San Diego Padres this weekend, the Dodgers have run their record to 8-4, and trail the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks by only one-half game. First place will be up for grabs when the Dodgers travel to Phoenix for a two-game set on Monday. A small component of the Dodgers' on-field success thus far has been the play of veteran utility player Marlon Anderson. Although he's had a limited impact in 2007, Anderson still will garner unlimited attention as the subject of Part 3 of our 436-Part Series, "Better Know a Dodger."
