Aretha Franklin @ Hollywood Bowl 6/27/09

“Did I dare to wear my tightest gown tonight?” Not having access to Aretha Franklin’s wardrobe closet, we can’t say for sure, though after checking out the figure-hugging rhinestone-studded black number she’d just changed into, it seemed likely. Why not, it was a night for bold moves. A short time later, she’d dare openly lust after our President (“Brother is fiiiine… mmmm!"). Judging from the rapturous response generated by her every word, Franklin could have dared to do just about anything. Who can complain when the singing’s this good?

Tonight In Rock: Aretha Franklin, Electric Daisy Carnival, Jon Brion, Papercuts

Tonight Detroit-based soul singer Aretha Franklin, otherwise known as the "Queen of Soul," will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. As always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) is poised to jam with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. If you're into classic guitars used by legendary musicians (Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others), then head on out to Guitar Center in Hollywood to catch the Guitar Center Legends Collection & Vintage Road Show—open to the public for a mere two days. And, lastly, San Franciscan indie rockers Papercuts will be performing at the Echo with none other than Port O'Brien and Sam Champion guitarist Sean Bones (LAist Interview) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Coliseum in Downtown to catch the 19th annual Electric Daisy Festival—the largest dance festival in North America, which could feature up to "200,000 dancing feet". LAist favorites Thievery Corporation are slated to headline day one.

Tonight the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin, will conclude a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Old 97's front man Rhett Miller is stopping through the Largo at the Coronet. Swedish metal band In Flames will be shredding at Club Nokia. And, lastly, NY-based folk rockers O'Death are sharing the stage at Spaceland with some great local bands, Le Switch and Death to Anders. But we suggest plopping down at the newly renovated Hollywood Palladium to experience Of Montreal. The last time the prolific Athens-based indie pop act played here, nearly a year ago to the date, "I felt like I was tripping on acid." LA's own noise rock troupe HEALTH (LAist Review) will be opening.

Tonight the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin, will begin a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Famed folk songstress Lucinda Williams is slated to perform at the Wiltern in support of 2008's Little Honey. Local multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion will be stopping through the Largo at the Coronet with his adept crew. And Brooklyn-based, Pratt Institute-bred noise rockers Japanther are set to tear down the Smell in Downtown. But in light of last night's cancellation of Kaiju Big Battel, we strongly suggest you head over to Ground Zero at USC to catch Busdriver's sinuous flow and Daedelus' burly beats.

Jerry Wexler, 91, who is known for coining the genre, "rhythm and blues," and producing albums for Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin has died in his Sarasota, Florida home. The Atlantic Records part-owner and executive was known for being "feisty," but also man in tune with music and had respect towards artists in the recording studio.

In an e-mail early, early, early this morning, McCabe's announced something unexpected: The Swell Season will be playing tomorrow night in the guitar shop's intimate performance space. You may not recognize the band's name, but you know them as Irish singer Glen Hansard and Czech pianist Marketa Irglova from the movie Once. The gig got booked serendipitously yesterday when Glen brought his guitar into the shop for repair. Of course, the bad news here is that tickets sold out quickly, probably before the light of day hit. Tonight, McCabe's presents Jackshit, who we interviewed here on LAist last August.

UPDATE, 12:10 P.M.: We forgot to remind you that Sia is playing this afternoon in Santa Monica for free. 2:00 p.m., Starbucks, random (see first bullet in Extra, Extra list).

Soul sisters reigned supreme during last night’s American Idol. It was time for the 12 girl finalists to step up to the mike – and five women blew the rest of the girls – and all the guys –out of the water.

On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key watched a failed British Navy attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Due to heavy storms and crappy equipment on both sides, neither the Americans defending the fort nor the Brits trying to attack it so they could continue sailing into Baltimore Harbor did much damage on each other, but Key was inspired when he saw a huge flag rise from the US fort...

The LA-based, music production/management company Xperimental Entertainment is trying to break the William Hung stigma attached to Asian American pop singers by conducting its own American Idol-type contest on its website.
