Dosh - Wolves And Wishes | A Jam Session of Sundry Timbres

Dosh - Wolves And Wishes | A Jam Session of Sundry Timbres

Some people are simply born to play music. To some extent, the language appears to be innate to them. Such is the case with Minneapolis-bred Martin Dosh. On his fourth full-length to date, the multi-instrumentalist (machine)—perhaps best known for his significant role in shaping Andrew Bird's 2007 album, Armchair Apocrypha—churns out a stirring mishmash of experimentalism. In Dosh's virtuosic world, notes are merely toys. He manipulates and arranges them to make it sound as though his band consists of an ensemble—when in actuality it essentially consists of him. Ultimately, however, Wolves And Wishes relies on a certain synergy between Dosh and a vast array of collaborators (Andrew Bird, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Fog, Odd Nosdam, Mike Lewis and Jeremy Ylvisaker). more ›

Sole to Rock The Knitting Factory This Friday

Sole to Rock The Knitting Factory This Friday

Sole is a badass, a rapper, a visionary, and this Friday he will be the dopest show to check out in town. Sole is often best known for his solo work with Anticon, and did a killer interview with us back in July, but will be killing it with his new music-homies the Skyrider Band. So like they recorded this self-titled album, and its smokin-good. more ›

WHY? to Rock Tangier Tommorrow!

WHY? to Rock Tangier Tommorrow!

It's uncommon that a rapper takes the name he used for over 6 years and transforms it into an indie-rock band, but founder Yoni Wolf is known for breaking the rules and getting great results. Operating within the Anticon collective Why?'s sound is self described as "smart, shimmering, sweetly soured" and front man Yoni's delivery as a "candytime-dissonant, singsong-suicide style". more ›

LAist Interview: Sole & The Skyrider Band

LAist Interview: Sole & The Skyrider Band

Sole is a rapper who as a teenager was already blowing off major record deals, because he thought having an album produced by Jermain Dupree was lame. He set forth making rap music for the advanced listener, and choosing never to pander what TRL, MTV, and Record Executives want to cram down all of our throats. Being one of the co-founders of anticon places sole on a special branch of the family tree of hip-hop.... more ›

LAist Interview: Bracken

LAist Interview: Bracken

Bracken's profile page on Anticon says it best:Bracken is a musical project spinning in a loose and ill-defined orbit around founder member Chris Adams. In another life, Chris, along with his brother Richard are known as co-captains of the good ship Hood. In this latest incarnation we see a side-step/stumble into a puzzling soundworld of future pop, analogue tape trickery, avant drone, loose dub flourishes, hip hop pacing and clattering drums. So we emailed him... more ›

LAist Interview: Buck 65

LAist Interview: Buck 65

Whats the best and the worst thing about being Buck 65?
The best thing is getting to see the world and the worst thing is that it's pretty much impossible for me to have a girlfriend.

Where are your favorite cities to do shows, and where does LA rank?
LA ranks very highly actually. Vancouver is always amazing. Brighton is very good. Glasgow. Melbourne. Seattle. It would be hard to pick a number one. What happened with you and Anticon? Are you still tight with those homies?
I'm tighter with Anticon than most people realize. Those guys are still good friends and I'm sure there will be more work in the future. What non-hiphop influences do you draw upon?
My main non-hip hop influence is film. Especially French film. Musically I could throw around a few names like Woody Guthrie, Howlin' Wolf, Leonard Cohen, Erik Satie... And old-time music in general. How did you get the name Buck 65 anyways?
My dad gave me the name, but when I ask him why, he won't tell me...Which artists would you like to collaborate with (besides The obvious choice: Nelly Furtado)
I met Nelly a few times and thought she was sweet. I can think of literally hundreds of people I'd like to work with. I have a few very interesting collaborations in the works right now. But at the top of the wish list would probably be... hmmm... Zooey Deschanel. Can you help me get word to her on that?Sure, we'll tell her.
