Though not on display, The J. Paul Getty Museum currently boasts 40 Adams photographs in its permanent collection, and the museum announced today that additional works by the acclaimed American photographer will join the existing collection -- and be displayed -- thanks to a generous donation from a Los Angeles couple.

Both traits make him the perfect artist to be featured at The G2 Gallery in Venice, a venue that supports environmental works and organizations. "Ansel Adams: Open to the Public" lives up to its name today and is finally on view, just one day after the 110th anniversary of his birthday.

The Sierra Club, one of the nation's most prominent conservation organizations, marks the anniversary of its founding today. The group was founded on May 28, 1892, with just 182 charter members. Their first president was none other than its founder, naturalist John Muir. The Sierra Club's first campaign was to lead an "effort to defeat a proposed reduction in the boundaries of Yosemite National Park."
Surprises Found In Ansel Adams Collection At L.A. Public Library
Turns out, when iconic landscape photographer Ansel Adams wasn't off in the wilderness, he was hired for commercial jobs, like documenting Los Angeles' aviation industry for Fortune magazine and capturing street scenes of 1940s life. According to NPR, Adams donated the collection to the Los Angeles Public Library in the 1960s estimating the value at $100 stating, "The weather was bad over a rather long period and none of the pictures were very good." No current estimate has yet been given on the actual value the collection.
LACMA Receives Gift of 3,500 Photographs
LACMA's photography collection just got a major influx of new images. The collection, ammassed by Marjorie and Leonard Vernon, includes works by Ansel Adams, Julie Morgan Cameron, Imogen Cunningham, Gustav le Gray, Edward Steichen, W. H. Fox Talbot, and Edward Weston.
