DVD Tuesday: The Informant! Død Snø! Jersey Whores!

             + 1 more

I thoroughly enjoyed The Informant! and am actually really looking forward to catching it again on DVD. If only Soderbergh would spend all his time making flicks like it and no time making flicks like this. It is by no means a good movie, but Dead Snow was a rollicking horror of a film (though a lack of solid nudity does penalize it substantially). How can you beat Nazi zombies? The less said about Jersey Shore, the better. It's just dumb assholes. It's not ironic; it's not a guilty pleasure; it's a show about dumb assholes. I'm probably as big an Adam Scott fan as there is (LAist interview here). Check out The Vicious Kind today! Was Richard Kelly a one film wonder? The Box would seem to indicate so (as if Southland Tales didn't scream it). Bloodbath!!!!!!! more ›

Box Office Review: Bad Does Good!

Tyler Perry's latest mediocrity I Can Do Bad All By Myself demolished the competition this weekend, debuting to $24M to top the box-office charts. The visually delightful (but narratively generic) 9 came in a distant second, taking in only $10.8M in its opening frame. Inglourious Basterds is proving to be a much-needed and resilient winner for Quentin Tarantino and the Weinstein Company ($6.5M | $104.3M), while the renaissance of Sandra Bullock continues with All About Steve ($5.8M | $21.8M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: 12 New Movies on 9/11

             + 15 more

Wow! Crowded weekend, huh? I'd say 9 has to be at the top of any list if only for its sumptuous animation. Tyler Perry continues to crank out middling material, though Taraji Henson is almost enough to pull me into I Can Do Bad All by Myself. I've railed against bad horror re-makes so I feel obligated to rail against Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, too. It has a decent pedigree (Peter Hyams directing, Michael Douglas starring), but stop recycling old ideas, Hollywood! Sorority Row may (will) suck but at least it has the stones to go for an R rating and let its gore/nudity flag fly. Whiteout is the new Dominic Sena movie. If you know anything about his earlier work, you'll know to stay away (actually Gone in 60 Seconds was good, dumb fun featuring vintage Cage). more ›

Movie Review: The September Issue

Sometimes life inspires art. Not too long ago, the life of Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine, inspired The Devil Wears Prada. In The September Issue we’re taken backstage into the real life fashion show that is Anna’s World. I had to wonder, on my way into the theatre, if taking part in this documentary was some PR move on the part of Ms. Wintour. Did being portrayed as an evil bitch by none other than Meryl Streep lead her to want to open up and show the public a softer side? And then the film began and the answer was… Hell, no. Anna is who she is, and you kind of have to love her for it. more ›

Box Office Review: Crappy Horror Reigns!

Millions of moronic teenagers pushed The Final Destination to the top of the weekend box-office chart as it snagged a richly undeserved $28.3M (largely due to the inflated price of tickets to the 3D showings). Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds managed to hold onto second place despite forecasts to the contrary ($20M | $73.8M). In a bit of good news, the worthless Halloween II came in below expectations ($17.4M). Surprise hit District 9 continued to perform well ($10.7M | $90.8M) while G.I. Joe rounded out the top 5 ($8M | $132M). more ›

Another Difference Between LA and New York

The New York Post reports on a star-studded party at The Argyle over the weekend that featured the likes of Orlando Bloom, Cristina Ricci, and Drew Barrymore among others. The lede, however, is about Anna Wintour to which our immediate response was, "Who the hell is Anna Wintour?" more ›
