Lawmakers have sent Governor Jerry Brown (and his corgi Sutter Brown) a bill that would require all cats and dogs that are adopted or reclaimed at shelters to be implanted with microchips. The pluses for owners are obvious: those microchips would help lost animals become reunited with their owners. And that will be good for shelters, too, which are often crowded with lost pets.

Spay-Neuter Law for Pit Bulls Only?
After a string of complaints, Animal Control officials in Orange County are considering a new law that would mandate spaying and neutering only for specific breeds, according to the OC Register.
Most of the complaints that have led to the potential new law are from incidents involving the same pit bulls and the same pit bull owners
Give an Old Dog or Cat or Rabbit a New Home for Adopt-a-Senior Pet Month
The next time you head out to one of LA County's 33 Animal Shelters or one of the hundreds of pet adoption and rescue organizations in LA, The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control would like you to remember that it's National Adopt-a-Senior Pet month and that old dogs (and cats and rabbits) need love too.
Will the City Part Ways with the Zoo, Animal Shelters & Convention Center?
With a $98-million deficit still on the books for this fiscal year--a $408 million shortfall is predicted next year--Los Angeles city officials are likely going to be looking at more ways to balance the budget. In the past, we've all experienced these cuts with higher parking meter rates, more expensive parking tickets and the continuing loss of city services as 2,400 employees retire early with positions not being replaced, to name a few.
LA Looking to go 'No-Kill' with Animals Shelters
Tomorrow is the first public workshop of an 11-part series called "Creating a Humane LA," which seeks to help people better familiarize themselves with LA Animal Services’ efforts to achieve “No-Kill” in their shelters. Currently, with the high volume of animals, shelters euthanize them to make room for more. To that end, tomorrow's topic explores high volume, low-cost, spay/neuter programs. The 6:30 p.m. meeting is in at the Constituent Service Center in the South LA Neighborhood of Manchester Square. More details here.
