After a two-month investigation of animal abuse at a chicken farms in Central California that led to of of the biggest egg producers in the state being singled out for mistreatment, Trader Joes has discontinued carrying eggs from that vendor. "The Monrovia-based chain said it wants all its vendors to abide by industry practices for animal care," according to KNBC.

The use of sonar by the Navy off the shores of Southern California has prompted vehement opposition by animal rights and environmental groups, and earlier this year a court order put in place restrictions on the practice. However, reports that a dolphin's death in late January on the island of San Nicolas might be linked to the Navy's use of sonar in a training exercise has once again brought the issue into the spotlight.
The main theme of the seminal grunge documentary Hype! is how something that by its very nature was anti-commercial became commercialized.
As we reported in January, Robert Culp wants the LA Zoo's current elephant enclosure shut down and all construction on the new enclosure halted, due to alleged pachyderm cruelty. Yesterday, the judge's ruling in the case was made public and he issued a big "no."

After the Humane Soceity of the United States released a video (seen below) of abused cows at a Chino slaughterhouse, the U.S. Department of Agriculture began an investigation on Wednesday. With a quick response, The California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division urged all public schools to check where their cafeteria meat was coming from and two fast food chains cut their ties with the Chino based Westland/Hallmark Meat Company.
The president of In-N-Out Burger, Mark Taylor, said Thursday his company decided to stop buying beef from the company after learning of the video.Continue reading "In-n-Out Burger Says 'No' to Abused Cattle Meat"
Actor and animal activist Robert Culp is demanding an immediate closure of the elephant exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo and that all work on the expansion of the elephant enclosure be halted. Billy, a 21-year-old Asian elephant, is now the zoo's only pachyderm, after the departure of Ruby last spring.
In Yermo, a small town east of Barstow in San Bernadino County, a woman was found Tuesday night lying in the street after she was attacked by a pack of Pit Bulls. She later died at the hospital.
After the mauling, the dogs ran to a nearby house. Deputies shot one dog to death when it returned to the scene and acted aggressively as paramedics were trying to save Caldwell's life, authorities said.Continue reading "Pit Bulls Attack Leaving Woman to Die in Street"

Pigeons in Hollywood have it quite good. There are always new tourists to poop on, there are a variety of internationally delicious dumpsters to dine from, the weather is usually good, and now a local group is providing our feathered friends with free contraception so they can get down without worrying about producing a bunch of unwanted chicks. "We think we've got a good solution to a bad situation," said Laura Dodson, president of...

Since 2004, Chow Bella have been implicated in the deaths of three dogs, been the focus of numerous complaints from community activists and on the wrong end of scorn from those whose pets sustained injuries while staying at Chow Bella.

Knute, the polar bear cub rescued from death at the Berlin Zoo after his mother rejected him, is the cutest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. He is adorable I could just watch him run around and play for hours. Right around 3:52 of this video I just want to die from a cute overload. Can you believe animal rights activists want to kill him and rob the world of this much...

As the University of California continues to reform how and why animals are used in research, even with full transparency to the public about their use, animal rights activists still feel the need to aggressively take action against the institution. It doesn’t really matter how strict the regulations are on animal use, or even the fact that countless breakthroughs have been made here through this avenue of research; the activists take issue with the...
Geurdon Stuckey, head of the LA Department of Animal Services, was handed his walking papers by Mayor Villaraigosa this week. A bureaucrat with no experience in animal services, he'd been appointed by Mayor Hahn over the objections of a broad coalition of animal rights activists. The department runs animal shelters across the county, mobile spay/neuter pet clinics, adoption events, and animal control. Stuckey wasn't able to lower animal euthenasia rates and couldn't please anybody, from the animal services Board of Commissioners to mainstream rescue organizations to the extreme Animal Liberation Front, which smokebombed his downtown apartment in September. Stuckey will be replaced by Ed Boks, the outgoing head of New York City Animal Care and Control, who has been recieved with universal enthusiasm (well, nothing yet from the Animal Liberation Front).
Nearly a year after police shot and killed a driver who was backing his car into a patrol vehicle, a similar incident took place over the weekend. This time, the driver was a 13 year old boy. The Los Angeles Times gives a detailed account from the police about what happened but the most interesting part of the piece is the fact that Chief Bratton had called for changes to policy regarding use of deadly force in exactly these kinds of situations but that those changes have yet to be approved.
It's been busy legislative week up in Sacramento. One law in particular should make animal rights activists cheer and hardcore gastronomes groan: Governor Schwarzenegger signed the measure prohibiting the practice of gavage, AKA force-feeding ducks and geese to fatten their livers. Because of the Governor's largess and concern for the rights of animals who cannot speak for themselves, foie gras producers in the state will have to develop a humane alternative to the practice which is used to create the swollen, juicy livers to satisfy the finest epicurean palettes. Sounds like tough legislation to swallow for might foie gras purveyor, Sonoma Foie Gras, the state's only source of domestic foie gras.
