Providence is hosting tonight's fundraiser for the Bocuse d'Or USA Foundation, an organization that preps and sends the American team to compete in the Bocuse d'Or, a famed international culinary competition named after chef Paul Bocuse. 'Price is Right' Host Barker Tells Costco Their Veal is Wrong
Former Price is Right host and longtime animal rights advocate Bob Barker has become the public face of a campaign to urge retailer Costco to stop selling veal produced under cruel conditions.
The national organization Mercy For Animals launched the campaign, which involved obtaining hidden camera video recordings at Buckeye Veal farm in Apple Creek, Ohio, the supplier used by Costco for the meat. The video shows "baby calves covered in feces and chained by their necks in narrow stalls, where they cannot even turn around or walk," according to a release issued by Mercy For Animals.
Rights Activists Worried New Animal Services Director Not Right for the Job
The City Council is expected to vote today on the appointment of Brenda Barnette as the head of the Animal Services Department, according to the Daily News.
The vote follows yesterday's Public Safety Committee hearing, during which she continued to provoke concerns among animal rights activists regarding her stance on issues and her plan to handle the challenging role of heading up a department that has seen five previous directors in just the last decade.
PETA Protests the Circus with Naked Woman in Shackles
To protest the arrival of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus in Orange County PETA's Meggan Anderson stripped down and donned shackles to stage a protest, according to the OC Weekly. Said Anderson: "I'm here to expose what the circus is so desperate to hide from the public. These animals have been beaten and deprived of their precious freedom for a lifetime of cheap tricks." The circus begins at the end of the month at the Honda Center, and other protests are slated for July 28, 31, and August 1 there. A protest, dubbed "The Greatest Protest on Earth" is planned for L.A. this Wednesday, July 14th at 5 p.m., to mark the arrival of the circus to the Staples Center.
Charo to Lead PETA Rally Against Bullfighting on Olvera Street
Vivacious entertainer Charo will be the star attraction at a rally to be held tomorrow at noon on historic Olvera Street. The Spanish native will be there on behalf of PETA on the eve of Mexico's highly promoted bullfighting festival to raise awareness about the perils of bullfighting, and to air her new anti-bullfighting PETA video. Charo was raised going to bullfights with her father, however she has come to see how the entertainment is actually cruelty. "This animal doesn't need to be punished, just to entertain yourself and sacrifice this beautiful animal," says Charo. "Just to spend 45 minutes enjoying the death of a living thing is barbaric and has to go."

After a two-month investigation of animal abuse at a chicken farms in Central California that led to of of the biggest egg producers in the state being singled out for mistreatment, Trader Joes has discontinued carrying eggs from that vendor. "The Monrovia-based chain said it wants all its vendors to abide by industry practices for animal care," according to KNBC.

The use of sonar by the Navy off the shores of Southern California has prompted vehement opposition by animal rights and environmental groups, and earlier this year a court order put in place restrictions on the practice. However, reports that a dolphin's death in late January on the island of San Nicolas might be linked to the Navy's use of sonar in a training exercise has once again brought the issue into the spotlight.
