Closed since January due to fire and rain damage, the Angeles Crest HIghway (SR-2) through the Angeles National Forest will remain closed with an opening expected by mid to late summer, Caltrans officials announced today. The Angeles Crest Highway is closed and will be through the end of March and today the County is closing other foothill roads within the Station Fire area at nooon, the Department of Public Works has announced. "The segment of Big Tujunga Canyon Road, from the Los Angeles City limit to Vogel Flats Road, will remain open to residents and construction crews. However, the road will be closely monitored during the storm and subject to closure if conditions warrant," an advisory stated. "The remainder of Big Tujunga Canyon Road, the Angeles Forest Highway, and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road, will close to all traffic except emergency vehicles." more ›

On Christmas Eve hikers making their way through the Angeles National Forest near mile marker 19.36 of the Angeles Forest Highway found a human skull, and alerted authorities, who then launched an investigation of the area. Searching through terrain recently ravaged by the Station Fire, deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station found a second skull just two days later. more ›

Last week's rainstorms prompted the closure of various Angeles National Forest arteries, much to the exasperation of many who were locked out during the Station Fire. The good news is that Caltrans plans to re-open SR-2 (Angeles Crest Highway), between La Canada and State Route 39 to through traffic on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. Additionally, the LA County Public Works Department had reopened Angeles Forest Highway, Big Tujunga Canyon Road and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road earlier in the week. more ›

Welcome back, snow! As of 11:33 a.m., snow has caused the closure of the Angeles Forest Highway between the foothill communities and Sierra Highway. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol is running traffic breaks in both directions on the Grapevine and the 14 Freeway between Crown Valley to Santiago, according to the City of Santa Clarita's Emergency Information blog. more ›
