The lazy response to Judd Apatow's Funny People will be that it isn't as, well, funny as his two previous films, The 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up. The subtext of that observation, of course, is that it isn't as good as those other films, and that is a howlingly wrong presumption. True, Funny People is not Apatow's funniest film, but -- true also -- it is his best. While not a straight comedy, it has plenty of laughs and inspired lunatic performances (Eric Bana, in particular, is a revelation). What it also has, though, is an interest in exploring the intersection of mortality and human failing, and it does so with great clarity and a requisite lack of pity. more ›

Funny guy Andy Dick was arrested on drug and sexual battery charges around 2 a.m. today in a Murrieta (Riverside County) parking lot after allegedly groping the breasts of a 17-year-old girl. After Dick pulled the teen's tank top and bra down, exposing her breasts (according to the victim and witnesses) in the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot, police arrested him in the lot of a nearby Sam's Club. Drugs charges were tacked on after police found some weed and a Xanax in his Dick's pants pocket. The waaaasted Dick (mugshot at right) was released on $5,000 bail. more ›

I was kind of unhappy at how PBS dropped off Super Tuesday coverage fairly early in the evening. Political sickos pretty much had to rely on CNN which was all tech-ed out: did you see that crazy stage Wolf Blitzer was on? How about the map with _way_ too much information? They didn't even know where to look on that thing and neither did I. Was I looking at specific precincts reporting, or was it statewide? Etc. The pack of political neanderthals they gathered for us was also uninspiring - can they not find some people _without_ political agendas to put on their programs? Who would ever want to hear anything from (the now morbidly obese) Bill Bennett? He's George Wendt without the humor. One thing's for sure, Super Tuesday is now too close too the Super Bowl and makes for an overwhelming 72 hour period, which is fine if you're a TV junkie. more ›

I think one would be hard-pressed to find more raw and compelling performances on any other show available on the networks or basic cable. We missed it then, but we understand it featured a well-dressed panel of celebrities trying to guess the occupation of a mystery guest, who would be revealed to the audience in advance to increase hilarity. Why bring it up now? J. Keith Von Straaten has brought it back to life, on stage in Hollywood, with real cool mystery guests (Lindsay Wagner! Wil Wheaton! Dick Van Patten!)
