Clippers Squelch Heat in Overtime

Clippers Squelch Heat in Overtime

On Jan. 12, 2011, the Clippers upset the might Miami Heat 111-105 breaking the Heat’s 13-game road winning streak. The Clippers were an upstart team that lacked the experience to be taken seriously. Fast forward one year, there were questions as to how the Clippers would respond now that they have been anointed as contenders. It turned out the Clippers proved their mettle in their 95-89 overtime win over the Miami Heat. more ›

Andrew Bynum Plays Big Against Houston

Andrew Bynum Plays Big Against Houston

Andrew Bynum was a player Kobe Bryant hated. Maybe it wasn’t a personal hatred, but before Pau Gasol came to Los Angeles it seemed that Kobe saw Bynum as the symbol of the Lakers’ front office incompetence after Shaquille O’Neal was traded. Bryant to this day still grouses about the fact that Smush Parker was a starting point guard for the Lakers. more ›

What the Hell Was That? Trying to Digest the First Clippers-Lakers Preseason Game

What the Hell Was That? Trying to Digest the First Clippers-Lakers Preseason Game

We all know it was merely an exhibition game Monday night, the first for both the Clippers and Lakers in fact. But to blatantly steal from Clippers legendary play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler, oh me oh my! It certainly did look like the dawning of the age of the Clippers as they dismantled the Lakers 114-95. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers On Two Game Winning Streak

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers On Two Game Winning Streak

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Not one person can accuse Clayton Kershaw as being the reason the Dodgers are not in the playoffs. He flirted with another complete game shutout this month, but a single by Chris Johnson and a double by Tony Abreu that scored Johnson ended that. With nothing playoff related determined by the outcome of this game, the Dodgers played a lot of young guns and Trent Oeltjen rewarded them with an RBI triple in the third inning for the game’s first score. Jay Gibbons hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning after Andre Ethier led off the inning with his first triple of the season. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Twins Payback Angels

LAst Night's Action: Twins Payback Angels

Minnesota Twins (1-1) defeat LA Angels (1-1) 5-3. Joe Saunders had been 10-1 in April with a 2.51 ERA. The Twins obviously didn’t really give a shit. Twins catcher Joe Mauer bashed a fast ball served to him down the middle out past the center field wall in the first inning with Orlando Hudson on to give the Twins a quick 2-0 lead. Delmon Young would hit a scoring fly ball that brought in Justin Morneau later in the inning for the 3-0 lead. Morneau would add a homer of his own in the third inning for a 4-0 lead which Angels center fielder Torii Hunter responded to with an RBI single in the bottom frame. After JJ Hardy homered to give the Twins a 5-1 lead, Hunter who was a triple shy of the cycle homered with Erick Aybar on base to bring the Angels to within two. Jon Rauch came in and got the save for the Twins, but it took 13 pitches Maicer Izturis and Aybar out after Brandon Wood struck out on three pitches. more ›

Sports Whimper In the New Year

Sports Whimper In the New Year

Things this weekend was just downright ugly. With NFL teams playing half-assed, USC’s self-flagellation and Pau Gasol going down with another hamstring injury for the Lakers, this weekend was just one long comedown from the high of the New Year. Those NFL games were perhaps the most unwatchable exhibitions seen in a long time. While some teams simply rested their starters after the first quarter, other teams fearing fan and media backlash experienced by the Colts last week left their starters in but used the most vanilla plays in their playbooks. Look at these scores: more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Unravel Again

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Unravel Again

Charlotte Bobcats defeat LA Lakers 94-84. I was afraid of this game knowing the Laker's troubles with the Bobcats. In fact the Lakers are only 6-8 against the Bobcats. The Lakers shot an abysmal 39% on a team where no one performed well. In fact they outshot the Bobcats 97-68. The Bobcats meanwhile become only the second team to beat the Lakers twice and are within one game of a playoff spot in the East. more ›

Andrew Bynum Out 8-12 Weeks

Andrew Bynum Out 8-12 Weeks

In a press release just issued by the Lakers, 21-year old center Andrew Bynum suffered a tear in his medial collateral ligament in his right knee after a collision with Kobe Bryant in Friday night's game at Memphis Grizzlies. He is estimated to be out for eight to 12 weeks. Just about this time last year, Bynum suffered an injury to his left knee that kept him out for the rest of the season and the playoffs. He is averaging 14 points, 8 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game this season and was named NBA's player of the week from January 19 through January 25. AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill more ›

Lakers Warm Up Against Toronto Raptors

Lakers Warm Up Against Toronto Raptors

Watching the Lakers over the last week or so has been somewhat anticlimactic. With the Houston Rockets winning 19 consecutive games to gain ground on the playoff hunt, the Lakers just seem to be dilly-dallying with the lesser teams as of late with a murderers row of away games coming up for the next week. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Step on Gas

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Step on Gas

Lakers 106, Bobcats 97 - The Lakers are 4-1 since acquiring Pau Gasol, playing a little cat-and-mouse last night in Charlotte. After allowing the Bobcats to cut a 13 point lead to 3, Kobe put it away in the closing minutes. He had 31 points, his third game in a row over the 30 mark. Gasol contributed 26 despite a cold ... The Lakers wrap up an impressive road trip tomorrow in Minnesota. Pre-Gasol and with Andrew Bynum nursing an injury, they started their longest trip in franchise history looking like things were falling apart. With a win over the Timberwolves, they would finish 7-2 and set a new NBA mark for the best record on a trip of 9+ games (since the NBA dropped neutral-sites in 1974). more ›

Lakers Win Despite Injuries

Lakers Win Despite Injuries

It would have been a much prettier victory had the Lakers played the New York Knicks at home three weeks ago. Today’s Knicks are hardly the bruisers of yesteryear, and it often appears as though Isiah Thomas rates coaching his team a distant third priority behind office poon and gourmet popcorn. But these last few weeks have been tough on the Lakers, with Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza out for 8 weeks each, resulting in a steady slip from #1 in the western conference to three and a half games back after losing 4 of their last 5, making last night’s contest a little tougher than it should have been. more ›

Lakers: The Passion Bucket Overfloweth

Lakers: The Passion Bucket Overfloweth

Dude, strange things are afoot in Lakerland. Last night, en route to the Lakers beating the Nuggets 116-99, Kobe Bryant passed the ball. He made shit happen. And then, postgame, with a smile on his face, Kobe spoke in approving terms about his team, citing the fullness of their “passion bucket”. WHO IS THIS MAN? more ›

LAst Night's Action: LA Hearts Bynum, Now

LAst Night's Action: LA Hearts Bynum, Now

Suns 106, Lakers 98 - Maybe Mitch Kupchak isn't a cupcake, but an evil genius. After mis-managing the Lakers in recent years, it turns out he was right about Andrew Bynum. He refused to trade the young center, and all of a sudden the kid got GOOD. Unfortunately, he's out with an injury and his backup was worthless against Phoenix (hence the evil part). Kwame Brown had seven turnovers and missed an open dunk. Bravo. He was already being booed in the first quarter, and was booed when he sat down for good in the third after committing his fifth foul. It's a tough cowd, and he's got large shoes to fill. Literally. As for the rest of the game, Kobe had a typical 30 point night, and Steve Nash had a typical 20 assist night. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Good News All Around

Clippers 97, Suns 90 - LA picked up their second win in the past 12 games and snapped a 4 game losing streak on the back of Sam Cassell, who scored 32 ... In their previous three meetings, Phoenix won by an average of 15 ... The Clippers are the lowest-scoring team in the NBA (92.6 points per game) while the Suns are the highest (110.3 ppg). more ›

Bynum Out 8 Weeks With Kobe's Positive Attitude

Bynum Out 8 Weeks With Kobe's Positive Attitude

You can halt production on that purple and gold 2008 NBA Champions afghan you’ve been crocheting so diligently -- Lakers center Andrew Bynum is going to be out for the next 8 weeks. Bynum suffered a dislocated kneecap and a bone bruise courtesy of Lamar Odom’s big ass foot during the Laker’s victory over Memphis on Sunday. The good news is that the injury will not require surgery and the 20 year old big man is expected to recover fully. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Heating Up

Lakers 112, Pacers 96 - The purple and gold have won six of seven and 12 of their last 15 games. Against Indiana, several players had big nights. All five starters hit double-digits in scoring, including 26 from Kobe Bryant, 23 from Andrew Bynum, and 22 from Derek Fisher. The Pacers are 0-9 against the Lakers in Staples Center. more ›

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer = The Lakers

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer = The Lakers

It’s a holiday tradition at this blogger's house (long before I had kids, which says a lot about me) — sitting down and watching the 1964 classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. What’s not to love about a quirky cast of characters teaching a lesson about acceptance? Well, I suppose the lesson of incessant marketing of the show is not a great lesson, but like many things around Christmas I choose to blatantly ignore what I don’t like. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Respond To Not-So-Golden Statement

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Respond To Not-So-Golden Statement

Lakers 123, Warriors 113 - We're still pretty sure this is a .500 team masquerading with an occasional good run, and now even their Phil Jackson is down on Kobe and Co. The Laker's coach told the media that a 50-win season is out of reach. His squad, however, responded by out-scoring the nation's hottest team on Sunday night. Kobe Bryant led the way with 28 and both Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum hit double... more ›

The Lakers This Week: I Think I’m Going To Boston

The Lakers This Week: I Think I’m Going To Boston

After years of pressure from stats geeks thoughtful mathematicians, the NBA has started keeping a new official statistic — the old plus/minus. It’s a simple idea that hockey has used for decades: How much does a team outscore its opponent (or get outscored) when a specific player is on the floor. It’s pretty simple. more ›

Draft Day Hangover in LA

Draft Day Hangover in LA

I'm guessing someone went out to celebrate last night, as a couple local college boys were chosen in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft. USC's Nick Young was the first to go, at pick number 16 to Washington, where he will toil in obscurity and probably be irrelevant in three years. Just kidding -- he might fit well in the Wizards offense. UCLA's Arron Afflalo was chosen 27th by the Pistons, who could... more ›

Love him or hate him: "The Kobe Video" now on sale

LAist readers might be tired of the controversy, but someone is betting that at least 50,000 people still want more Kobe. The "Kobe Video," which shows the embattled Laker bashing the organization and Andrew Bynum -- and swearing a lot -- is now available for sale on the official Kobe Video site. In case you hadn't heard, the video was shot by two guys who have not identified themselves, but claim to have caught Bryant... more ›
