Tonight Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird (LAist Review) will be concluding a two-night stint at Largo at the Coronet. Two of the most prominent women in indie folk rock, Mirah and Thao Nguyen, are poised to combine forces, backing one another at the Bootleg Theater in what will invariably be deemed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And, lastly, local electro pop singer-songwriter Evan Voytas will be gracing the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Long Beach-based indie rockers We Barbarians, who will be kicking off a free month-long residency. LAist favorites, Long Beach's own surf punk trio Tijuana Panthers (LAist Interview, Review), local folk rockers the Romany Rye and Chicagoan indie rock quartet Ezra Furman and the Harpoons are slated to perform as well.

Local electronic mastermind Flying Lotus is poised to take on a two-night record release stint at the Echoplex with San Diego-bred DJ the Gaslamp Killer, Las Vegas-by-way-of-San Diego rapper/singer/DJ Gonjasufi and Ras G in celebration of his latest tour-de-force—2010's Cosmogramma; It should also be noted that the first night will incorporate a very special, newfangled live band. LA-bred all-female, retro 60s pop rock quartet the Like, who recently recorded their forthcoming debut with none other than Mark Ronson and Phantom Planet front man Alex Greenwald, will be kicking off their month-long, free residency at the Echo. And, lastly, Minneapolis-bred chamber-pop singer-songwriter Jeremy Messersmith will not only be performing at the Hotel Café, but he will also be performing at the Bootleg Theater.

San Pedro-based indie rockers Dios (LAist Interview, Review, #2) will be ringing in their latest endeavor, 2010's We Are Dios, at the Troubadour with Signals (LAist Review) and the Henry Clay People (Review, #2, #3, #4) in tow. And, lastly, Portland-based pop-folk songstress Mirah will be gracing the Bootleg Theater.
Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Andrew Bird, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Sara Lov
Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Recent Saddle Creek signees, Toronto-based indie rock outfit the Rural Alberta Advantage will be performing at the Echo. And, lastly, Hawaiian-bred singer Sara Lov will be gracing the Mint. Tonight Seattle-based garage rockers Murder City Devils will be concluding a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box with local duo Tweak Bird. English indie rock outfit Mystery Jets are poised to play Spaceland for this week's edition of Club NME. And, as mentioned previously, Long Island-based pop rockers As Tall As Lions will be headlining the Troubadour for free if you're legal. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown to catch Chicago's crown jewel, Mr. Andrew Bird. The classically trained violinist will not only mystify you with an unparalleled proficiency, but also a very singular, songbird-esque trill. Sweden's own multi-instrumentalist Loney Dear (LAist Interview) is slated to kick the show off.
Meet Loney Dear aka Emil Svanängen, One of Sweden's Most Promising Songwriters
On Wednesday night Swedish songwriter Loney Dear (otherwise known as Emil Svanangen) will be playing with Andrew Bird at the Orpheum Theater. For six years Loney Dear has been writing, recording, and producing his own albums. He started in his house in Stockholm and slowly grew a steady following through word of mouth. The name Loney Dear refers to the word "lone" which is an ode to the long nights he spent on his own recording his albums.
Tonight In Rock: Andrew Bird, Pinback, Rademacher, Kenan Bell
Tonight LA is busy with the usual Monday night residencies. We've got Rademacher at the Echo, Kenan Bell at Spaceland and Manhattan Murder Mystery at Mr T's Bowl. And San Diego-based indie rockers Pinback will be headlining the Echoplex. But seeing them live does tend to expose how big of a slob front man Rob Crow actually is—both musically and, well, otherwise. Could we pass up recommending to go see Andrew Bird perform at Largo at the Coronet? Absolutely not. The classically-trained violinist will demonstrate his mastery of the language with his awe-inspiring one-man show for one last night.
Tonight In Rock: Brian Wilson, Mary J. Blige, Andrew Bird, The High Dials
There's a ton of great stuff going on in LA tonight, but it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get in. First and foremost, there's the Carl Wilson Foundation 10 Year Anniversary Tribute Concert & Fundraiser featuring surf rock legend Dick Dale and Beach Boys front man Brian Wilson. The ginormous Gibson Ampitheatre will be bouncing to R&B mainstays Mary J. Blige and our personal guilty pleasure, Robin Thicke. You've got a lot of money and foresight if you're planning on going to one of the aforementioned shows. And, quite honestly, we've only got so much of both. So we shelled out thirty bucks a month in advance for the opening night of Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird's two-date stint at Largo at the Coronet. If you don't have tickets, then do whatever it takes to get in. It'll be the most intimate, mind-blowing experience of your life.
Dosh - Wolves And Wishes | A Jam Session of Sundry Timbres
Some people are simply born to play music. To some extent, the language appears to be innate to them.
Such is the case with Minneapolis-bred Martin Dosh. On his fourth full-length to date, the multi-instrumentalist (machine)—perhaps best known for his significant role in shaping Andrew Bird's 2007 album, Armchair Apocrypha—churns out a stirring mishmash of experimentalism.
In Dosh's virtuosic world, notes are merely toys. He manipulates and arranges them to make it sound as though his band consists of an ensemble—when in actuality it essentially consists of him. Ultimately, however, Wolves And Wishes relies on a certain synergy between Dosh and a vast array of collaborators (Andrew Bird, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Fog, Odd Nosdam, Mike Lewis and Jeremy Ylvisaker).
LAist's Lindsay's Top Ten Albums of 2007
Everybody's doing it, right? I don't pretend to be hip or edgy or rebellious. I mean, I grew up on Billy Joel and Madonna and Motown and then the Gen Xer's basic dichotomy of KROQ versus Top 40 in the 90s. I find it increasingly harder to fall in love with albums in the downloading age, and am one of those people who obsessively compiles mixed cds for friends and iPod playlists full of individual tracks from a broad sampling of artists. The three places I'm most thankful for getting me turned on to new music would be my fellow LAisters, the awesome site 3hive, and good ol' KCRW. So without further ado, here are my pics for the 2007 releases I most enjoyed:

The Deadly Syndrome's Top Ten of 2007
I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...
Bumbershot
Last Labor Day weekend I desperately needed to escape the disagreeable, torturous heatwave. So I made a last minute decision to fly to Seattle and bumbershoot. As luck would have it, my spontaneity provided for a much more temperate and rainless 70 degree haven. The Bumbershoot Festival has been running 37 years strong and every year it seems to progress into a bigger and better animal. Situated within the spacious Seattle Center amidst the...

As a fan on the LGS message board aptly described, “I love how sweet and fresh your voice is, like conversations with a good...
Coachella Secrets Revealed - Andrew Bird Is Really A Moose
I knew he was inventive and eclectic but I had no idea he had antlers. Confident and whistling, Andrew Bird delivered a sublime and fascinating set with all the nuance of a small club date -- seemingly oblivious to the entire desert and the thousands of tweaking, dehydrated kiddies twirling toward the tent fringes. No one can resist a violin and a theremin. Below, check out the subtle and unmistakable Dr. Stringz performing, “Plasticities.”...
