Last night we visited the Valley's Relay for Life which supports the American Cancer Society. The 24-hour event is wrapping up right now over at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys. Why have an event that lasts 24-hours? Because cancer never sleeps and so the 90 plus teams participating in this year's Valley Relay for Life raised over $225,000 and are spending a full day of their life in the name of awareness. We don't know how else to say it except like this: Fuck Cancer! Breast cancer, throat cancer, stomach cancer, all of it. Kiss our ass, Cancer! Especially lung cancer which is the leading cause of cancer deaths in this country and the most preventable. Take those sexy cigarettes and break 'em up, throw them in the trash and never look back. LAist had, for a long time, been seduced by the allure of attractive people holding rolled tobacco on their lips and in their hands but no longer. Smoking may be sexy but a long life and being able to run up a flight of stairs without fearing for a heart attack is way hotter. more ›

In the spirit of the now-official season, tonight is the benefit screening of the Concert for George at the Knitting Factory. Performing will be Seth Swirsky with the Temple Bhajan Band, plus Minibar, Rusty Anderson (guitarist for Paul McCartney) and Bedroom Walls.
