LAist @ SXSW: The Real March Madness Begins In Austin

LAist @ SXSW: The Real March Madness Begins In Austin

Forget your brackets and your cinderella stories, SXSW is the true March Madness. 4 days and nights of non-stop music, and that is only a slight exaggeration. Bands are packed into every bar and tiny venue hoping to be noticed and break out. While the meat of the festival is the official slate that SXSW has organized, there are "Unofficial" parties and performances that nearly every band will play along the way. From around 11 in the morning until 3 or 4 am, Austin becomes a musical playground as a walk down 6th Street during SXSW is akin to a walk down Las Vegas Blvd, however, instead of the sounds of slot machines pouring into the streets, it's the sound of bands. more ›

LAist Film Calendar: The Devils is Sacrilicious!

LAist Film Calendar: The Devils is Sacrilicious!

Ken Russell's The Devils is one of the most controversial films ever made. Based on the Loudun possessions of medieval France, it's a brutal critique of theocracy and power, and its own poster frankly warns the matrimony of sex, violence, and sacrilege "is not for everyone". Nearly 40 years on, The Devils has yet to be released uncut on home media. But BAFTA and the American Cinematheque bring it to the Aero this weekend to tempt fate and pay tribute to Ken Russell. The "Brave New Worlds" series also features sci-fi-devo-mind-warp Altered States, the D.H. Lawrence adaptation Women in Love, and Tchaikovsky biopic The Music Lovers. If the name Ken Russell still leaves you wondering, "Who?", then head up to Hollywood, where the Egyptian hosts Russell's film version of The Who's Tommy, paired with Lisztomania, another Roger Daltrey-starring bizarro rock opera. more ›

The Airborne Toxic Event Honors Iranian Hero in 'Neda' Music Video

LA-based Airborne Toxic Event's new song "Neda" is a eulogy for Neda and proceeds from sales of the song are going to Amnesty International's Neda Project (iTunes link). The band's frontman Mikel Jollett (LAist interview) wrote and directed the video, with artwork by Mona Shafer Edwards. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mogwai, Doves, O+S

Tonight NY-based alternative rock trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs (LAist Review), among many other prominent rockers including hometown heroes Silversun Pickups (LAist Review, #2) and the Airborne Toxic Event (LAist Interview, Review, #2, #3, #4, #5), will be performing at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater for this year's edition of KROQ's famed "Weenie Roast" (LAist Review). English indie rockers Doves are poised to headline the Wiltern with none other than Massachusetts-based buzz band Wild Light (LAist Review). And, lastly, Birmingham's own indie-pop duo O+S will be gracing the Bootleg Theater. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown to catch prolific Scottish post-rockers Mogwai. LAist favorites Dead Meadow are slated to kick things off. more ›

Meet Mikel Jollett, Lead Singer of The Airborne Toxic Event

Meet Mikel Jollett, Lead Singer of The Airborne Toxic Event

Los Angeles' local heroes, The Airborne Toxic Event, are coming back to town for a giant homecoming show at the Henry Fonda on Thursday. Over the past year this band has launched itself into the musical stratosphere with their self-titled album which has earned constant rotation on the now deceased Indie 103 and KROQ radio stations. Mikel Jollett founded the band after one hell of a week. In one week his mother fell ill with pancreatic cancer, then he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and then the relationship he was in fell apart. While his mother was in recovery, Jollett found himself playing the guitar and writing songs to help him cope. A few months later he formed the Airborne Toxic Event and the band been rocketing to glory ever since. Mikel Jollett was kind enough to talk to us earlier this week. more ›

Tonight In Rock: The Fratellis, DeVotchKa, Thee Oh Sees, Franklin for Short

Since you'll probably be at the Wiltern tomorrow night catching Vampire Weekend, you might not feel compelled to catch Airborne Toxic Event's largest gig on their home turf thus far. The Smell in Downtown boasts a stellar, albeit relatively noisy, psych-infused lineup of San Francisco natives. But if you're not too keen on the idea of the dingy locale, then we suggest you head on over to the swanky confines of Tangier in Los Feliz for some low-key indie rock. The night kicks off early (8:30 p.m.) with a solo set from Angela Correa of Correatown, followed by the excessively sweet pop antics of Franklin for Short and, finally, Marcus Very Ordinary. more ›

An Airborne Toxic Event for Recycling

One of LA's favorite indie bands played a concert yesterday in support of recycling on the Westside. In front of the Tara Mansion (Gone With The Wind mansion) at Culver City Studios, the outdoor concert sponsored by the California Department of Conservation brought out fans to spend the early evening with The Airborne Toxic Event. While the band's name may seem a bit un-eco friendly, (it was actually a Don DeLillo reference) they are actually "manic recyclers" and advocates of public transportation. LAist reader Stephen G. Ruiz submitted these excellent photos of the show to share with you all. Thanks Stephen! more ›

Soundcheck: The Airborne Toxic Event, The Deadly Syndrome & Castledoor @ Spaceland, 1/31/08

Three weeks ago, The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace) concluded their January residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake with a show that included The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace) and Castledoor (MySpace). It was a chance to see all three of Kevin Bronson's bands to watch on the same stage in a single night. more ›

Tonight in Rock: Cowboy, Blues & Rock

We've never been to the Celebrity Center for a concert, but we can vouch for Cowboy (not Country!) musician Dave Stamey if you're into that kind of thang. Still, for those inclined to roots music, The Arthur Adams Band will be at the Baked Potato in Studio City playing blues. more ›

109 LA Bands to Play SXSW

109 LA Bands to Play SXSW

Every March in Austin is like Mecca for music and techies. South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the most popular interactive and music conferences, always hosted in the Texan city that has been honored as one of the creative cities in America. Out of the 1200 or so bands playing from around the world, 109 are from Los Angeles and LA County(give or take a few depending on errors in the list from SXSW, ex: Meiko lives in LA, not Georgia anymore). Add in some other nearby areas and make that 122 bands. more ›

Guide to February Rock Music Residencies

Guide to February Rock Music Residencies

Month-long residencies are one of the best ways to catch up-and-coming bands in Los Angeles. You have at least four times to catch a band, and each time, if they are gaining popularity over each show, it will be harder to see them. Last Thursday at their final residency concert, The Airborne Toxic Event played a sold out show with another 300 fans not getting in at the door. That's how crazy residencies can be. Catch 'em while you can. Here's your February line-up: more ›

Tonight in Rock: Hot Chip, Pity Party, Henry Clay People

Despite it being Superbowl Sunday, February residencies got off to a great start last night with Alex & Sam at Tangier. Tonight is the first night of February residencies at Spaceland, Silverlake Lounge, Crash Mansion and The Echo/Echoplex. By last Thursday, The Airborne Toxic Event had gained so much popularity from their January residency, they had to reject 300 people from the door. Case in point, catch these bands in residency early on in the month. more ›

Tonight in Rock: Last Night to Be Toxic or Head to Brazil

Tonight in Rock: Last Night to Be Toxic or Head to Brazil

It's the fifth Thursday of the month and this is your last chance to see The Airborne Toxic Event in their January Spaceland residency. KROQ and Indie 103.1 both added their song "Sometime Around Midnight" to their rotations last week and Airborne hears this is the first time in about 15 years KROQ has done this with an unsigned band (Weezer being that 15 year marker). "We also feel incredibly lucky and thankful that so many people seem to like our song. We are just a local band from Los Feliz and we would have never imagined we'd be writing an e-mail like this tonight," they wrote earlier this week. more ›

Tonight in Rock: Sia, Matt Costa, Hey Willpower

Tonight in Rock: Sia, Matt Costa, Hey Willpower

Be joyful with the electro-pop sounds of Hey Willpower (Will from Imperial Teen and Tomo from Tussle) at The Echo or get a more worldly groove on at the Temple Bar. Jackshit, who we interviewed once, plays tonight and there are two in-store performances as well: one at Amoeba (of course) and the other at Active Ride Show. There's a few sold out shows, but you deserve to know if you're hardcore enough to try to get in and The Airborne Toxic Event released a new song yesterday (embedded below). more ›

It's the Spaceland On Ice series, so go skate and listen to music! At Spaceland itself, The Airborne Toxic Event is in residency this month starting tonight where they will place with the Henry Clay People, Natural Disasters and Frankie Palmer. more ›

The Airborne Toxic Event's Top Ten of 2007

The Airborne Toxic Event's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year. more ›

Big in '08 Addendum

Big in '08 Addendum

LA Times staffer and Buzz Bands blogger Kevin Bronson's story "Taking the L.A. indie rock scene personally" hit stands last Thursday. By means of an intimate portrayal, Bronson set forth his pick of indie rock up-and-comers for L.A.'s indie rock scene in 2008. While I completely admire that he would put his neck out there for three rather small, entirely worthy bands (The Airborne Toxic Event, Castledoor, and The Deadly Syndrome) at the forefront of... more ›

CMJ Day Two

CMJ Day Two

Yesterday commenced with an LA bang. I started off at the Indaba music loft again because they have been hosting a plethora of good (free!) shows. There's something comforting about watching bands from someone else's living room. I showed up around mid-day to catch one of my favorite LA bands Division Day. Front man Rohner Segnitz and the boys ran through a pleasant acoustic set. With drummer Kevin Lenhart on shakers, Division Day sounded... more ›
