There's a big increase in law enforcement looking for drunk drivers this holiday season, so if you do actually want to "Avoid the 100" and not get a DUI after toasting the New Year, AAA of Southern California is offering a pretty sweet deal: the Tipsy Tow, which provides a one-way ride home for inebriated motorists.

L.A. to Standard & Poor's: We Don't Need You and Your Stinkin' Credit Rating
Los Angeles has a lesson to teach credit rating agency Standard & Poor's: Downgrade our credit rating and we just won't hire you anymore. (You can almost see us thumbing our nose, right?) Basically, L.A. is joining in with other cities and counties in giving the group the boot and claiming their rating doesn't really mean much, anyhow.
A GIANT Downloadable Map Of Los Angeles, Circa 1915
The Automobile Club of Southern California has released a monstrously sized, downloadable map of Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Mountains that they commissioned back in good ol' 1915. Play with it on the Big Map Blog or keep a copy under the bed with the rest of your map porn collection.
2010 Was a Gas: Prices at the Pump Fill Up to 2-Year High
If the next few days involve fueling up and hitting the road, whether it's a long weekend getaway or a drive to Pasadena to see the Rose Parade, you'll be feeling a budgetary hit we haven't felt in SoCal since 2008. "Southern California gas prices are at their highest December levels of all time - and higher than at any point since October 2008 - after continuing to rise all week," according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Study: Texting While Driving has Doubled Since Law Went into Effect
Since California's no texting while driving law went into effect 19 months ago, texting and use of smart phones has just about doubled, finds a study conducted by The Auto Club. The membership organization found that 2.7% of drivers at anytime are breaking the law. The same study conducted earlier this year found that 1.1% of drivers were texting.
Texting While Driving is Increasing, Auto Club Study Finds
Over the past two years, the Automobile Club of Southern California has conducted a handful of studies before and after the texting-while-driving law went into affect, finding that texting dropped 70%, from 1.4% of motorists to 0.5%. But their latest study, conducted over the last month, finds that texting is on the rise again, more than doubling to 1.1%.
Too Tipsy? Take a Triple A Tow.
If you happen to live within seven miles of where you find yourself too inebriated to drive home today, you can take advantage of The Automobile Club of Southern California's Tipsy Tow service. AAA is offering "free towing in an attempt to keep drunken drivers off the road during the Fourth of July weekend," explains the Daily Breeze. "The Tipsy Tow program will be available to intoxicated drivers through midnight tonight in the 13 Southern California counties served by the Auto Club." If you're in need of a ride (or you are taking the keys out of a tipsy driver's hands) call 1-800- 400-4AAA (1-800-400-4222) and ask for a Tipsy Tow, and a tow truck will haul your car and your drunk ass (not passengers) home (within 7 miles).
Study Shows Hand-Held Cellphone Use Down Thanks to State Law
It's been one year now since a California law went into effect making it illegal to drive while using a hand-held cellphone. The Automobile Club of Southern California has released the findings of "observational roadside surveys of drivers on Orange County roads," and have determined that the "use of hand-held cell phones by drivers declined sharply from pre-law levels."
Gas Prices Are Down, But Don't Get Your Hopes Up
Good news for folks with empty tanks: Gas prices in the Los Angeles area have been declining steadily for four weeks now, and are expected to continue to move down, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. Prices are descending "by about half a penny a day over the past week as more and more Southland gas stations posted prices under $2 a gallon."
It's New Year's Eve, You're Drunk and Damnit, You Drove
Well, if you happen to drive within seven miles of home, then you might be in luck. The Auto Club of Southern California is offering their Tipsy Tow service for those too inebriated to drive, but aware enough to take advantage of the free service.
Hey, Dummy, Don't Forget Your Keys!
The Southern Californian Auto Club would like to remind all of us that 'tis the season for us to be stupid, particularly when it comes to locking ourselves out of our cars. During December the Club deals with more locked out members than any other time of the year. In fact, according to their press release, in December of 2007 "the Auto Club answered 76,346 calls for help by its members for keys locked in vehicles at shopping malls, retail centers, grocery stores and other locations." The busiest locked-out days fell on the weekend before Christmas--you know, right when you're at the peak of frazzled, desperately trying to get everything done and every errand run.
Gas Prices Dip for 58th Consecutive Day
The average price of a regular gallon of gas today is $2.491. Gas prices have declined for 59 days straight, falling an average of $1.25, according to the Daily News.
Gas Still Going Down, Down, Down
In five days, gas prices have dropped more than 10-cents. On October 22 a regular gallon of gas was $3.25, 20-cents less than a week prior to then. Today, the price for the Los Angeles area averages out to $3.137. In fact, some stations, near and far, are changing out that 3 for a 2: "We've never seen local gas prices come down this fast in such a short period," Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring said last Friday. "Gas stations in Buena Park, Chula Vista, Visalia and a few other local cities are the first to post sub-$3 gas prices, and we could see many more over the next week if this decline continues."
Miami Tops US Cities for Road Rage
Say what you will about traffic in LA, people driving while texting, and tailgaters boiling over with road rage, but according to AutoVantage, a Connecticut-based auto club, similar to AAA, Miami is home to more road-ragers than LA, so take that Florida. For the second year in a row Miami has claimed the dubious crown of having the meanest, worst, angriest, and dumbest commuters who run red lights, talk on their phones, and slam...
