Gay Atwater Village Man Who Was Denied Social Security Benefits Continues to Get News Coverage

The issue of social security inequality (and in general, the lack of federal recognition of gay partners) for domestic partnerships is getting some more attention. Occasional LAist contributor Shawn Nee produced a video featuring Atwater Village resident Bill Bowersock and his story of being rejected by the feds over survivor benefits. Since last week it has spread to the New Yorker, the Atlantic and most recently on NBC's The Filter with Fred Roggins, who had Bowersock on as a guest Wednesday evening. more ›

Hugo's Introduces Vegan Mac & Cheese

There's no question about it. Hugo's Restaurant (you may know them for their taco stands) has some of the best mac and cheese in town (fusilli in a creamy combination of Cheddar, Gorgonzola, and Parmesan cheese baked crispy for $12.95). So when they introduced a vegan mac and cheese special ($7.50) for the month of February, it had to be tried. more ›

Halloweeny, or Just Horrible?

There's a house in Atwater Village near the intersection of Glendale and Glenhurst that's all decked out for Halloween - dummies, sound effects, the works - and for the most part it looks delectably spooky. However, there's one particular feature of the decor turns our stomach. One of the dummies is hanging from a noose, literally "strung up" on a tree. Now, we know from last year's Sarah Palin effigy controversy that techinically we can hang whatever we want in our front yards. That said, what bothers us about this particular image is that this guy has not just been hanged, but lynched. Even though the dummy isn't black per se, (more of a ghost white) it alludes to a shameful aspect of American history and therefore has the potential to offend or upset some people. more ›

Atwater Village's Lovely Gender-Neutral Humps

Good news for everyone's well-being, but perhaps bad news for speed junkies--at least of the variety who enjoy zipping around on residential streets. How About Some Soup in Echo Park?

How About Some Soup in Echo Park?

It's been an unusually warm January, but some of last and this upcoming week things are cooling down across Southern California. It just so happens that starting yesterday, Stories Books & Cafe will be serving soup. What caught our local eye is not only a bookshop that sells local books, but one that features a vegetable soup using locally bought food, or as they say, "assorted produce from the Echo Park and Atwater Village Farmer's Markets." On Mondays, they will serve said vegetable soup and other soups on different days (today is Torilla Soup). Where is your favorite place to get some soup? more ›

LAist Interview: The Pity Party

LAist Interview: The Pity Party

Local duo The Pity Party is playing the second show of their month-long Monday residency at Spaceland tonight. Much has been made about drummer/keyboardist/singer Heisenflei and her triple-threat instrumentation. But even if she weren’t an octopus, Heisenflei and guitarist/singer Maurice-Richard would still be stirring up L.A. with their smartly sparse songwriting and quirky melodies. We asked Heisenflei, who also runs The Little Knittery in Atwater Village, a few questions before the show. Continue on to read more about The Pity Party unplugged, the progress of their full-length album and their morbid fear of handshakes. more ›
