An altercation between strangers that began on the 5 Freeway yesterday afternoon ended in a shooting on the streets of Burbank, according to the Burbank Leader. The drivers of a dark-colored van and a Mercedes-Benz sedan became involved in a dispute while driving on the northbound I-5 Freeway near the Western Avenue exit. A sofa left on the freeway caused a crash that left one person dead Sunday evening, according to wire reports. A Toyota Corolla traveling in the fast lane around 9:30 p.m. hit a couch. That car was then hit by a GMC Safari, which overturned and ejected a passenger who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is still under investigation. The five-acre fire eruprted this afternoon and is threatening a dozen homes in the Newhall area, according to CBS2. The California Highway Patrol hopes to open at least one lane on the northbound 5 Freeway soon, but recommends commuters take the 14 Freeway and avoid The Old Road. With gusty winds that could reach 70 MPH expected to last into tonight, the I-5's Grapevine section has been reeling from dangerous driving conditions since early this morning. "Shortly after 7:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, and then about 8:15 a.m. shut down the northbound lanes at Vista del Lago," reports LA Now. The CHP has already been called about 20 accidents in the area, and reported conditions on the heavily-traveled section of freeway include ice, hail, snow, and black ice. Closed since 5:30 p.m. yesterday, the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine remains closed this morning. The California Highway Patrol had hoped to open the artery that connects Southern and Central California early this morning, but dangerous conditions are apparently persisting. It may open around 10 a.m., according to an ABC7 tweet. The closure is between Grapevine and Smokey Bear roads. At about 5 a.m., a big rig traveling southbound jackknifed near Calgrove Boulevard, blocking lanes and impacting one of two routes out of the valley. As of 6 a.m., the Osito Fire near Pyramid Lake is 65% contained and was downgraded from 400 acres to 288, according to official reports. Another day, another fire. This year's fire season in Southern California may have gotten off to a slow start, things are beginning to pick up. Two fires--the Oak and Marshall fires--burned in and near the Angeles National Forest within the last 24 hours. This afternoon, a new one began near Pyramid Lake in the Grapevine. A first, it was reported to be rather small, then more than 100 acres and now over 350 acres according to KNX1070 on air. At least two northbound lanes on the 5 freeway have been closed. Motorists attempting to travel on the 5 Freeway through Downtown this morning were stopped short for over an hour following the death of 25-year-old Jaime Herrera, who was struck and killed by a silver Toyota Camry at approximately 4:30 a.m. Herrera was "running east across the northbound lanes near the Los Angeles River," when he was hit, according to L.A. Now. So what was he doing on foot on the freeway? The LA County coroner's office says he was doing something he sure as hell shouldn't have been: “He had just finished tagging a freeway sign when he attempted to run across the freeway,” explained Lt. Cheryl MacWillie. “There was another friend with him tagging, but he survived.” more ›
