Mountain Lion Kitten Killed While Trying to Cross the 405
A mountain lion kitten striking out on his own was killed Tuesday morning, while trying to cross the 405 just south of the Getty Center.
The National Park Service has been following the movement of this mountain lion born in the Santa Monica Mountains in May 2010 and equipped with a GPS collar. They named him "P-18."

With all the bus and rail projects mandated by Measure R and all the bus and rail service changes currently being evaluated, Metro wants to make sure the public doesn't forget about its massive highway program of 18 new projects worth nearly $1.4 billion aimed to largely to improve commuting. While highway construction may seem to go against the mission of mass transit, Metro says the new highway projects set to begin in 2011 will instead serve to enhance mass transit function.
Woman Killed Stepping From Stalled Vehicle On 405 Freeway
49-year-old Rosa Margarita Montiel of Tehachapi was fatally struck Saturday by a Toyota Camry as she got out of a stalled vehicle on the northbound 405 Freeway in Mission Hills, said the California Highway Patrol, reports CBS Local. The accident happened around 2:15 a.m. just south of the freeway’s junction with the Golden State 5 Freeway .

New Carpool Lanes Open on SB 405; $167 Million Project Almost Done
Carpool lanes added to the Southbound 405 Freeway as part of a $167 million project were opened up this weekend, in the hopes this will relieve some congestion on the road. "Caltrans workers Saturday took out barricades on the southbound 405 freeway's carpool lanes from the Interstate 10 Freeway interchange south to the 90 Freeway," explains CBS2, adding that the last step was to replace the surfacing material in the center divider.
White House is Happy about 405 Freeway Project
Who knew our little freeway that could was the largest and most stimulated project in all of the state. Ripped from a White House press release about California meeting Recovery Act goals ahead of schedule: "As of today, California’s largest ARRA-funded project is the I-405 in Los Angeles County that will be widened and include several interchange upgrades along a 10-mile stretch of HOV lanes. This project is located in an economically distressed area and relies on $190 million in ARRA funding to go toward the total cost of $739 million for the project." The only 10-mile 405 freeway HOV widening project listed on Metro's website is located in the "economically distressed" areas between the 10 Freeway and Ventura Blvd... you know, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Brentwood, Westwood Village, etc. Still, once completed, it should be happier days for many.
405 Lanes Still Shut Down After Robber Hides in Storm Drain
Several lanes remain closed on the southbound 405 freeway as police search for burglary suspect who hid in a storm drain near the Roscoe on- and off-ramps. The suspects--one was arrested--were apparently trying steal copper wiring from a nearby warehouse when someone reported the burglary, according to the LAPD. The closure began around 3 a.m., snarling morning traffic on one of the busiest freeways in the world.

2-Bus Crash on the 405 Injures 24 Kids, Snarls WLA Traffic
Two buses traveling on the 405 Freeway North collided at approximately 9:40 this morning near the Venice exit. According to abc7.com, "at least 10 fire paramedic units were sent to a parking lot just off the 405 Freeway, at the National Boulevard offramp, following the crash," to treat "24 children with minor injuries." A steady stream of emergency vehicles moving from the scene of the rear-end collision to the parking lot of Ross Dress For Less continued for more than an hour afterward, as paramedics worked to treat the many kids who suffered injuries in the incident. To deal with the traffic chaos on the streets, "Los Angeles city transportation officers were sent to that intersection to direct traffic."

All southbound lanes will be closed at Burbank Boulevard until at least 1 p.m. due to an multi-car accident, including a private ambulance near the junction of the 405 and the 101 around 11 a.m., according to SigAlert.com. "Seven patients were transported to area hospitals suffering from a range of injuries from minor to critical," according to the LAFD, one child was among the injured, and one person had to be extricated from a vehicle.
