HBO will be broadcasting the premiere episode of "Game of Thrones" 11 times across 6 channels within about a day and we think that's too much. --- "24" movie is a 'go' with 2012 release date. --- "Deadliest Catch" returns to Discovery tonight at 9pm. Check out the TV Junkie Must-Watch Plan.
TV Junkie: HBO To Over-Saturate Network With 'Game of Thrones'
TV Junkie: The '24' Finale
Tonight we will stagger from last night's series finale of "Lost" to tonight's series finale of "24". In the 8 1/2 years since the premiere of "24" the show has gone from being an avant-garde, in-your-face morality play about terrorism, torture, and politics, to something formulaic and predictable. "24"'s combination of raw action and comical xenophobia was an entertaining circus to most of us but (disturbingly) taken as "truth" by the Bush II regime, the military, and "patriotic" pundits like Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. The series was at its strongest when it was about Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer and at its weakest when it became plot-focused.
TV Junkie: '24' & 'Lost' Finales Get Set Up; Versus #fail Tour of California
In last night's penultimate episode of "24" we (finally) experienced some of the uncompromising action that made the series so exciting when it first debuted almost nine years ago. Now the stage has been set for next Monday's finale, it's official: it's Jack Bauer vs. the World. We're tuning into "Lost" tonight to see how they're setting up for Sunday's finale.
TV Junkie: Ending of '24' Even More Obvious; Another Emmy for 'Amazing Race'?
Spoiler Alert for "24," Another "True Blood" minisode, about the "Amazing Race" finale, pilot season, a Carol Burnett Facebook campaign to bring her to Saturday Night Live and your daily TV Listings...
TV Junkie: Conan to TBS-It-Up; Pilot Production Leaving LA
The TV Junkie Plan: "Attack of the Show", "How I Met Your Mother", "Rules of Engagement", "24", "The Daily Show" (Bryan Cranston guests!), Ferguson (Tim Gunn)
TV Junkie: 'V' Season Premiere; WE tv Rollout; Kiefer Speaks; What's On Your Plate + Ed Begley Jr. = teh awesomeness
Today WE tv released its upcoming slate of programming which includes: a reality show about seniors in their Disneyland-like retirement complex in Arizona called "Sunset Daze" which begins airing on April 28th; and another reality series that will begin airing before the end of 2010 called "Mother Knows Best?" about Joan Rivers moving into her daughter Melissa's house and turning her life topsy-turvy. Among other series aquisitions, those who won't be getting enough Alyssa Milano from her new show, "Romantically Chellenged" (starting April 12th on ABC), will be able to watch back-to-back episodes of "Charmed" on WE starting on June 21st.
TV Junkie: '24' No Mo; Final Season of 'Saving Grace' Premieres; E!'s 'Save One Show' is Back
On Friday FOX announced that it was canceling Kiefer Sutherland's "24" meaning it's last episode will air on May 24th - talk about serendipity.
TV Junkie: Super Bowl Ads Flop; Winter Olympics YES/Treacly Profiles NO
The news is out that the Super Bowl was the most watched program ever and that the remnants of The Who are the most embarrassing senior citizens ever. Viewers were also generally very unimpressed with the commercials that ran during the show and while a lot of people think "so what" let's not let them get away with that.
TV Junkie: Golden Globes Recap; SAG Awards Next; Last Week of Conan Flavored 'Tonight Show'?
We were initially surprised at how badly we did with our Golden Globe picks compared to the winners in last night's broadcast but when we realized how little we have in common with a film reviewer from Luxembourg we felt a lot better. Yes, a small group (<100) of foreign journalists award Golden Globes for what they consider the "best" in American TV programming and we couldn't second guess them - fail, we only got 4 out of 11 right. It might have helped if we knew which networks might have thrown them soirees in advance but that info wasn't available. Supposedly the fact that they are so malleable is something that makes the Golden Globes "cooler than the Oscars" according to CNN, but we're not buying it.
TV Junkie: '24' Finale; 'Chuck' Will Return
Tonight is the two-hour season finale of "24" (haters can move on please). We're already looking forward to season 7 which will supposedly occur in New York City and will be the "most realistic" season yet. How is that even [snark] possible? We admit we have shamelessly been wasting a ton of hours on the "24 - Special Ops" iPhone game. A recent high point for us was the chance to see a Janeane Garofalo performance where she read some of her "Janis Gold vs. Chloe O'Brien" dialogue.
TV Junkie: NBC's Partial Announcement; Fallon Not A Disaster According to WSJ
Unless you are a Chicago Bulls or Boston Celtics fan (yeah!) this weekend's TV was kind of boring other than Sunday's "Breaking Bad" on AMC, which was excellent as usual. We wonder why the premiere of season 2 of "Ashes to Ashes" was pulled off of BBC America - it was a highlight for Saturday and pretty much the only alternative to basketball.
TV Junkie: Olyphant in New FX Series; 'Chuck' & 'Heroes' Season Finales
The AP has an interesting story today on local newscasters trimming their staff despite reports stating that local news is becoming a ratings leader compared to national news broadcasts. Having technology that allows only 1 or 2 people to go to a location shoot should mean more coverage, because that's what people want, not the same amount of coverage with less people.
TV Junkie: Tivo To Go Toe-To-Toe With Nielsen; Is Your Show On the Chopping Block?
The TV Junkie Plan: "Chuck", "24", "Doing Da Vinci", Letterman, Fallon
TV Junkie: 'Alaska Week' on Discovery; Cancellations for TNT & Showtime
The Discovery Channel has put together a ton of programming it has dubbed "Alaska Week" and it begins tonight at 9pm with "Arctic Roughnecks". Tomorrow will feature the season premiere of "Deadliest Catch" and we will have an interview with Captain Keith of the Wizard for you!
TV Junkie: NCAA; WHDH/Leno Redux
Perhaps it's because of the NCAA final, but it seems like there isn't a heck of a lot of TV news to report, all of late night TV tonight is repeats and no one has given us any cool leaks lately. Do you have the inside scoop on some TV tidbits? Other than former "Charlie's Angels" angel Farrah Fawcette's cancer spreading, of course.
TV Junkie: Top Gear's Project Sipster; 'Cupid' Returns
Our friends over at BBC America's "Top Gear" have really done it - they have achieved unprecedented success with "Project Sipster": the creation of a car that gets 84mpg , goes from 0-60mph in 7 seconds, and whose cost was to be $7000 or less. You can see more in this video. Suck it Tesla and watch "Top Gear" on BBC America tonight at 8pm.
TV Junkie: Obama-Leno Ratings; Leno on 'Top Gear'
According to the LA Times, about 1 in 4 TVs were tuned to "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" when President Barack Obama made an appearance last week. Leno has had higher ratings only 3 other times in the past, but the media space is a lot more crowded than it was even 4 years ago, so it was a stellar night for NBC.
TV Junkie: Prez Obama on Leno this Thurs; Chevy Chase on Primetime w/Joel from 'The Soup'
AMC's "Breaking Bad" is so good that we can't stop thinking about last night's episode. Both macabre and humorous, it was the best thing we saw on TV last night. The show starts with Walter White already out of the frying pan and in the fire and it ends with him seemingly consumed by the flames - we don't know how they're going to keep it up.
TV Junkie: Where's 'LA Non-Stop'? Also, 'Curb' & 'Entourage' Coming to Basic Cable?
Today NBC launched a 24-hour cable channel in New York called "New York Non-Stop", replete with expanded news coverage, on-location stories, and interactive elements. When can LA expect the same investment?
TV Junkie: Jimmy Fallon Premieres in 'Late Night'; 'Saving Grace' Winter Premiere
Tonight marks a big debut in late night TV with the start of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". While we were concerned with the departure of Conan O'Brien from "Late Night", we think he can be very successful in the earlier slot. Jimmy Fallon, at 34 years-old, will be bringing some youth to the time slot, although both Carson Daly and Conan O'Brien were younger when they started their stints on late night television.
TV Junkie: Oscar Hangover; 'The Closer' + Other Season Finales Tonight
The spectacle that is the Academy Awards was wonderfully covered by LAist last night but the outcomes of the spectacle were very predictable. LAist was at the SAG awards last month and most of the big winners there, who were also nominated for Oscars, were winners last night.
TV Junkie: We Ask Amy Sedaris About Her Cameo On Tonight's 'The Closer' on TNT
We love Amy Sedaris and we love the fact that we can see her on something other than just a few minutes with David Letterman - this time as a somewhat wacky psychic on "The Closer" tonight @ 9:00pm on TNT.
TV Junkie: Post-Grammy Hangover; Prez Obama's 1st Press Conference; Clive Owen on Conan
Did any of you watch the Grammys? Did you enjoy it? OK, so you might actually like pop music but tell us what you specifically like about it. To us, the performances seem somewhat off and the staging heavy-handed. There was a 17% increase in viewership of the Grammys this year over last year with most folks watching during the 8:30-9:30pm hour.
TV Junkie: Super Bowl = Super $$$; TV Junkie Talks to Cloris; '24' Truths & Fictions
NBC made sold $260 million worth of ads for yesterday's Super Bowl - forgetting the movie trailers (GI Joe?), what was your favorite ad?
TV Junkie: The Week Begins on Post-SAG Awards High; 'Trust Me' Premieres on TNT
Still flying high after attending the SAG Awards last night, hope you saw our Twitterstream of pics yesterday, you can see them again here. We will have many more pics and video clips of the event for you soon.
TV Junkie: How/Where To Watch The Inauguration
Did anyone have a chance to watch the "We Are One" inaugural gala on HBO yesterday? Some of it interesting, some of it schmaltzy, not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
TV Junkie: Golden Globes Results; '24' Premiere Part Deux; 'Top Gear'
NBC's "30 Rock" and HBO's "John Adams" won every Golden Globe award they were nominated for last night. AMC's "Mad Men" won it's category last night as well and there were no surprise winner's in television but we were very please to see Anna Paquin from "True Blood" walk away with a Golden Globe. Was there anyone who didn't win a GG that you thought should have?
TV Junkie: DVD Sales Drop; Sunday Season Premiere of '24'
Like it or not, this weekend is all about Part I of the season premiere of "24" (FOX, Sunday @ 8pm). Kiefer did a good job on today's "Morning Edition" on NPR and will be on Letterman tonight. As far as we're concerned there ain't jack but Jack on this Sunday. This doesn't mean we won't be keeping an eye on the Golden Globes, but all reports have it that the awards ceremony will be "subdued".
