Here's Lookin' You Up: 'Austerity' Named Word of the Year

Are the words we use a reflection of the world we live in? That could be the case for 2010, when the most-oft looked up word, according to word experts Merriam-Webster, was austerity. A bit bleak? Perhaps. Blame the economy. "Searches for the word began to spike in May, around the time when Greece began battling its debt crisis with harsh austerity measures," explains Slate. Work "austerity" into a few sentences from here on out, and it'll be part of your vocab in no time. more ›

U.S. Earns Respect with Draw

The U.S. National Team faced a tough test on Saturday in its FIFA World Cup 2010 debut, facing England, one of the tournament's favorites. It was a rematch sixty years in the making. The last time the two teams faced each other was the 1950 edition of the World Cup in Brazil, when the U.S. upset England by a score of 1 - 0. A feat so shocking, English fans believed the scoreline to be a misprint. England has since hosted and won the World Cup in 1966, but the U.S. game has had its ups and downs. more ›

Happy Holidays from Youngwood Court

In what has become a yearly tradition, Youngwood Court, aka "The House of Davids", located in Hancock Park at the intersection of 3rd St. and Muirfield Rd., has been decorated for the holidays. This year's decor is the most extensive yet, complete with sidewalk snow, an African-American Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus sitting together on a throne, a large crown and "NORRYWOOD" sign on the roof, and a larger-than-life representation of the house's owner, Norwood Young. And yes, each of the nearly 20 Davids have been costumed with matching Santa hats and jackets. more ›

First Lady Shriver Not Heading into the 2010 Governor's Race

California's first lady, Maria Shriver, has lived most of her life in the spotlight, thanks to her high-profile career in television journalism and her familial and marital ties to politics, but now she says "she has no intention of running for public office in 2010," according to an AP report in the Centre Daily News. Villaraigosa Lost the Election in Chatsworth, Northridge

If LA was just the Northwest Valley (you know, the 12th district neighborhoods (PDF map) including Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Northridge and Granada Hills) Mayor Villaraigosa would have lost the primary election to runner up candidate Walter Moore, found the LA Times in an analysis of preliminary election results. Villaraigosa won the election outright after getting just 55% of the vote. With 5% less, he would have been in a runoff with Moore. Despite that, he told CNN the he "won overwhelmingly." more ›
