Gavin Newsom Back in SoCal Today & Tomorrow

After spending the weekend in Chicago at an Obama event, San Francisco Mayor and Gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom is back in the Los Angeles area for like the billionth time today and tomorrow for his "Conversations About California's Future" tour. He'll discuss the economy, health care, education and will hold a question and answer period with the audience. Tonight he'll be in Long Beach and in Santa Ana tomorrow followed by Riverside next week Thursday. All three events are open to the public. Newsom is the only frontrunner Democratic candidate running for Governor. L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa decided not to run and former Governor and current Attorney General Jerry Brown's campaign website is intended for his re-election to his current post, not governor.

2010 Election: Marcy Winograd Gearing Up to Challenge Jane Harman

Is it already time to start talking about the 2010 election? While there's been quite a bit of gubernatorial talk already, congressional districts have been on the down low. Let Every One Be Counted: Mayor Launches 2010 Census Initiative

April 2010 is now one year away, and LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is hoping to inspire many Angelenos to take an active role in the Census due to take place. Today he was joined by City Council President Eric Garcetti, Councilmembers Wendy Greuel and Jose Huizar, director of the U.S. Census Bureau Los Angeles Regional Office Jamie Christy, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Taboo, member of the Black Eyed Peas, to launch the City of Los Angeles 2010 Census initiatives, according to a press release issued today.

First Lady Shriver Not Heading into the 2010 Governor's Race

California's first lady, Maria Shriver, has lived most of her life in the spotlight, thanks to her high-profile career in television journalism and her familial and marital ties to politics, but now she says "she has no intention of running for public office in 2010," according to an AP report in the Centre Daily News. Mrs. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Democrat (and a Kennedy), has been busy with many projects aimed at bettering the lives of Californians, like her recent WEConnect endeavor, and says "she is too much of a free spirit to be tied to a desk job."

Villaraigosa Lost the Election in Chatsworth, Northridge

If LA was just the Northwest Valley (you know, the 12th district neighborhoods (PDF map) including Chatsworth, Porter Ranch, Northridge and Granada Hills) Mayor Villaraigosa would have lost the primary election to runner up candidate Walter Moore, found the LA Times in an analysis of preliminary election results. Villaraigosa won the election outright after getting just 55% of the vote. With 5% less, he would have been in a runoff with Moore. Despite that, he told CNN the he "won overwhelmingly."
