Photo by KingoftheHill via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr Today, the Metro Board meets for their monthly meeting, but today is especially important because they will be voting on whether or not to ask voters in November to raise the sales tax a half-cent to 8.75%. Despite opposition, namely from the San Gabriel Valley over the Gold Line Extension, it is expected to pass. However, the politicians in Sacramento have to pass a bill... [continue]

A few local dancers have made it to the top 8 on So You Think You Can Dance. After taking on the challenge of learning everything from a Bollywood number to a Smooth Tango, Katee Shean and Twitch Boss are standouts in the competition. Their place in the top 8 earns them a spot on the So You Can Dance tour and just maybe one of our So-Cal favorites will win the competition. LAist asked... [continue]

Photo by C-Monster via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr A suspicious package was found at LAX's Terminal 4 today around 1:45 p.m. The terminal was locked down for an hour with no flights affected. Police have not released the contents of the package and if there are any suspects. (via phone call to LAX Public Information Office) Sorry to be such a bummer, but Trader Joe's OG wine guy, Robert Berning, passed... [continue]

A lot of us grew up with The Golden Girls, from their unprecedented success on NBC's Saturday night sitcom lineup to the now-ubiquitous Lifetime reruns. It was a show that probably shouldn't have been a hit--four elderly women sharing a home in Miami in the mid-1980s--but thanks to its incredibly sharp (and still funny) dialogue and the talents of its four leading ladies, the show has earned its place as a pop culture icon. One... [continue]

The official count for Glow in Santa Monica this weekend is now at 200,000 people with 75,000 there at the same time, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. For the most part, comments left on an LAist post (and other sites) about the event were very strong and negative. However, from there, the biannual event can only come back in 2010 as a slamming success, drawing the same large crowd and pleasing even more... [continue]

Photo by Thomas Hawk via Flickr The weather? The Getty? The beach? Spaceland? The hills? The light? Hollywood Bowl? The studios? Pink's? All losers, according to the readers of Los Angeles Magazine, who narrowed down a field of 64 to declare Amoeba Music the Greatest Thing About L.A. Not bad, for a music store that isn't even native to L.A. -- this music lover's wet dream opened first in Berkeley, then San Francisco, then... [continue]

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/world_news/The_Biggest_UCLA_Undie_Run_Yet'; As tradition in years past with LAist, we visited the tri-annual UCLA Undie Run last month for the Spring Quarter midnight event just prior to graduation. To say the least, the party was massively huge. It took just under 20 minutes for the thousands of students to get through the Strathmore tunnel. The event was so wild that LAist photographer Tom Andrews' camera came to near death in a water balloon... [continue]

Dance shows on TV have become a phenomenon and choreographer Shane Sparks couldn't be happier about it. Millions of viewers are getting hooked on seeing what the competitors will do week after week. GLOW: The Aftermath on July 22, 2008

"Ain’t no party like a West Coast party ’cause a West Coast party don’t stop” Some arrived early, and some arrived late, but the true die-hards at GLOW hung on until the bitter end. You can't really claim Westside cred until you've woken up face-planted on the beach.... [continue]

NOW Festival, Week 2 on July 21, 2008

Under Disney Hall this week, there's more movement afoot with Dance Magazine's one of “25 to Watch” (2007) Holly Johnston, along with Trisha Brown alumnus Lionel Popkin and, in a more theatrical bent, the wild, humorous and nearly chaotic Poor Dog Group. Johnston, creative force behind Ledges and Bones Dance Project will present a new quartet she calls Politics of Intimacy. Embracing her uniquely powerful movement style—built on muscle, risk and visceral thrill-- the dancers... [continue]

GLOW: One Reporter's Opinion on July 21, 2008

The GLOW festival started at sundown Saturday night and didn't stop until after sunrise Sunday morning. The event was hosted by the City of Santa Monica and The Santa Monica Arts Foundation. It was sponsored by local businesses including The King's Head Pub as well as larger corporations. There were various installations, performances and exhibits scheduled throughout the night, so the experience changed drastically as the event progressed. Earlier arrivals had many more entertainment options,... [continue]

Evangelical mega-pastor Rev. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church and author of "The Purpose-Driven Life" has done what nobody else could. No, Warren has not established peace on earth or claimed an end to global poverty, but this morning he announced that he'll be bringing the two major 2008 presidential candidates together (or, rather, back-to-back) on August 16.... On October 28, 1966, commuters between Malibu and the Valley were surprised by the image of a large, running depiction of a naked woman. Sixty feet tall, painted in pink house paint, she was quickly dubbed The Pink Lady. At first, there was much speculation as to the artist and the purpose of such an image. Due to the subject matter, it was assumed to be a man. It turned out that this mysterious image... [continue]
