What I'm Thankful For on November 27, 2008

Thanksgiving dinner. Yum! 1. A giving community Today I went to Gobble Gobble Give at the Echo where hundreds of people showed up to donate clothes, and prepare and package food to hand out to the homeless. It's always extraordinary to see individuals give of themselves even in the littlest manner. It reminds me that we aren't all selfish assholes and are capable of looking out for one another. Represent! 2. Del Taco Classic Combo... [continue]

To most of the world, Max Lugavere is co-host of the increasingly popular, Al Gore progeny, Current TV. But in between taking on topics of Gen Y and starring in hip Gap ads you’ve seen across town, Max’s taken on a new role: musician. What began for Max as a mere outlet of self-expression, quickly turned into an abounding passion and entry into the acoustic artist domain. Despite his love for music and songwriting, Max... Two weeks ago I headed to Las Vegas for my friend's 21st birthday. There's nothing quite as fun as partying in Sin City while also celebrating a person's rite of passage into adulthood. With a killer hotel discount rate and swimsuits in hand, my friend's and I made the trek to Las Vegas for the most epic trip of the year. Photo essay after the jump!... [continue]

I did it. I finished the Los Angeles Marathon and have never felt so good. Although, it should be said that it wasn’t always this way. The first thirteen miles were freaking great. I went through them like a champ and was completely unstoppable. Then Mile 15 came around and my legs started to cramp. Then a blister started to develop on the arch of my right foot. Then I began to excrete large... [continue]

LA Marathon - The End is Near on February 28, 2008

Holy shit the marathon is on Sunday! It seemed so long ago and now it’s right around the corner. I’m so excited, but I also really can’t wait for it to be over. In case you don’t know, unless you’re already an avid runner, training is a big deal. My poor feet and knees are ready to take a break. I’ve never run so much in my life.... [continue]

Chances are you’ve heard of Dr. Drew Pinsky, board certified addiction medicine specialist, either through his popular late night radio program Loveline, or recent TV hit show, Celebrity Rehab. What you may not know is that in addition to the two programs, Dr. Drew also has another radio show on KGIL 1260 AM. Monday through Friday, from 11 am -1 pm, Dr. Drew opens up the phone lines and explores broader health topics, from... [continue]

one must feel completely comfortable in whatever they’re wearing, be it be snug, loose, etc. So here’s a suggestion: Prior to the marathon, wear your gear during a long run and confirm it feels just as good when there’s five pounds of sweat on it. Make sure that it can sustain through hours of physical activity. See if it will chafe your skin or fall apart. A nagging shirt tag or a poking thread has... [continue]

Let me start off by saying that I don’t particularly enjoy running. No matter what, during the first ten minutes of my run I feel like I’m about to die. Afterwards, my legs can get so sore it hurts to even walk. Nevertheless, I easily get stressed out from life and work and running helps relieve the tension. Ultimately, it makes me feel good and that's why I continue to do it. For a... [continue]

Goodbye Back Door Bakery on January 14, 2008

Sad news, East siders! As of January 14th, Back Door Bakery is officially closed. Although the bakery has been at 1710 Silver Lake Blvd for 17 years, this past December the landlord for the building provided BDB 30 days notice to leave the premises. But all is not lost. While at the bakery on Sunday, I overheard one of the employees tell a customer that Back Door Bakery is currently in the midst of... [continue]

This past weekend, in the steep hills of Echo Park, there was a Christmas party extravaganza complete with booze, baseball players and bad taste. Described as "Your Parent's Christmas Party," the holiday invite explained that one must "come dressed in what your parent's once thought was their holiday best," because after all, "This is how we do it in 92." With that in mind, I reluctantly put on one of the fugliest xmas sweatshirts... [continue]

What I'm Thankful For on November 22, 2007

1. In N' Out I've been training for the LA marathon for the past month and once a week, after a super hard run, I reward myself by ordering a #3 w/onions. Seriously, how could a "fast food" hamburger taste so good? And it's really not that bad for you. If you order a burger combo with a diet coke, you'll consume less than 550 calories. It's totes a win-win situation. 2. Bros Because... [continue]

I don’t have upgraded cable at my home, so whenever I visit my mother, I take the opportunity to catch up on shows on my favorite channel- HBO. During the last visit to my mom’s, I immediately plopped on the couch, flipped to channel 500 and was surprised to see an old couple going at it. Now, this wasn’t a husband and wife having quiet sex on their bed. No, grammy was full on...... [continue]

LAist Interview: Brother Reade on September 27, 2007

If you live in Los Angeles, you may have felt a rumble from rap group Brother Reade. Wait, let me take that back. You can compare them to a 4.6 earthquake. Making heads bop and girls shake their asses, Brother Reade has steadily taken over the eastside, and and soon the world, with their ingenious lyrics “This is for the strippers and the fans of the Clippers / cuz life ain’t easy for y’all”... Loud Neighbors? Call the Cops. on September 13, 2007

There are a lot of fucked up things going on in Los Angeles at night. Drug deals, murders, gang violence, just to name a few. To me, it was hard to believe that cops would come in quick time to a domestic disturbance complaint, so I never called until tonight. My neighbor’s girlfriend moved into his apartment several months ago. Since her arrival, there’s been nothing but cackling, crying, screaming, and slamming of doors. During... [continue]

Clipse @ the Roxy - 9/4/07 on September 7, 2007

The first time I heard Clipse was on the Neptunes 2003 release "The Neptunes Present... Clones". Ever since, I've been hooked by their undoubtedly catchy rhymes and complex lyrics. It took them a while to create a follow up from their first album Lord WIllin', due to problems with their record label, however they came out with their newest release, Hell Hath No Fury, in November 2006. Finally, Tuesday night I was lucky enough... [continue]

My sister decided to be the best sibling in the world and buy tickets for me to see Justin Timberlake at the Mandalay Bay. The only bad part about it was that it was on September 1, smack dab in the middle of Labor Day weekend. If you've ever headed to Las Vegas or the river during this time, you know it can be a total pain in the ass. I believe the 15...... [continue]

I Have No Electricity on September 6, 2007

Last week I texted my friend Dals to see what she was doing for the evening. "Chillin' at home, smokin' hookah. My power went out," she responded. I texted back, "Ahaha you loser," and then I thought about just how much it sucked being her. On Monday afternoon, I arrived to LA from Las Vegas and was greeted by a sweltering apartment. I don't have A/C. Usually it's not cold inside my place, but fans...... [continue]

Tonight I will be at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas attending Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds show. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love not only the newest album, but also JT’s general hotness. Above, I’ve included Mr. Timberlake’s video for his single “My Love”, to display how he can make me, and plenty of other women and gay men, melt into a puddle on the floor. Generally, listening to Justin...... [continue]

Happy Stomach...Happy Ass on August 27, 2007

Yesterday afternoon I went to Los Burritos, located off of Vermont and Sunset Blvd., for lunch. After finishing my carne asada taco and gulping down some diet Pepsi, I went to the bathroom to tinkle. I asked one of the workers at Los Burritos where the restroom was, and he instructed that it was located behind the Employees Only door next to the counter. I walked through the door and entered the restroom located... [continue]

Does my Volume Offend You? on August 20, 2007

It was Sunday afternoon and a cool 75 degrees. It was the kind of weather that makes you want to drive off into the sunset while listening to your favorite music on full blast. Although driving to a far off place wasn't an option, I opted to roll down my windows and blare a couple summer tunes from my VW Bug. First I listened to new UGK, then decided to slow it down a...
