  For what it's worth, the chef at 15 is Dominican. I would say that the ratio of upscale/downscale/ethnic/non-group-specific establishments in Echo Park is pretty much in line with the respective groups in the population, at this point....

  Explore your own neighborhood, even if at first glance it doesn't seem to have what you need. Instead of driving to Target, see what you can get at the discount store around the corner. Stop in at the ethnic markets...

  We've already had Chinatown bus service for years, I take it to Vegas on a regular basis (although the SF route isn't as convenient/frequent): www.gotobus.com. There's also the new Megabus (www.megabus.com), but they don't have LA-SF service yet....
