Yesterday we showed you a flyer for a missing opium pipe, and today, once again from the files of "Things Other than Dogs or Cats that are Missing" comes this flyer for Gary the Duck, gone astray since December 10th. Gary's owners are quite distressed, obviously. Have you seen... [continue]
This is a picture of a bait raft in Pedro. I love this one because the seagull looks so blase as the sea lions go at it. I am not a fan of cheesily talking for animals. But he just seems to be thinking, "There go those goddamned sea... [continue]

We hope at least it was a good show. Perhaps Santa will get wind of this person's plight and stuff their stocking with the opium pipe of their dreams. From a flyer posted on Sunset. Photo by gketsios via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr... [continue]

Found on Hollywood Blvd. late yesterday morning: PETA members demonstrating against Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's use of animal fur. "The only bigger fashion victims are animals." The small text at the bottom of the posters tell people to play an online game where you can interactively dress up "Hairy-Kate and Trashley Trollsen". See our Mary Kate carrion inspired design after the jump....... [continue]

How do you tactfully say "watch out for bird poo overhead"? The LA Zoo has it down. Even those "poo prints" on the sign look like decor, not the real deal. Photo by Just chaos via Flickr...... [continue]

This photograph is somehow both beautiful and sad. Broken, abandoned things can be just as meaningful, sometimes even more meaningful, than natural beauty. It is just one more thing for the sea to claim and make its own. Photo by Mike Watt...... [continue]

Any bicycle commuter in this city knows the wonderful secret about it: parking is abundant. Hi Mr. Tree, I'm going to latch onto you. Hello Mr. No Parking for Street Cleaning Sign, thanks for letting me lock to you and park here when cars cannot. And let's not forget that bicycle valets are becoming a more popular concept. "The surf was so big, no one was surfing here and the Pier was closed. Apparently, all the surfers were in Redondo," explains LAist Featured Photos contributer, Jake Rome, about yesterday's surf. LA Times: No big waves yesterday. We beg to differ. In the photographer's own words: "This shot was taken Sunday morning behind the Chatsworth Courthouse on Penfield Ave. It was one of those bright, clear, brisk mornings we get right after a rain. The place was deserted and the scene just seemed a little surreal. The sploches are reflections... [continue]

This strike photo outside of Warner Bros. was taken last week on November 27. If they waited a few days, it would have been witty to play off the 28 Days Later reference... oh well, maybe they have that new Will Smith movie in mind... or maybe they just like to eat people. That or they have dermophagia (gross!). Photo by movie lover via the LAist Flickr Pool (join and add your own photos!)...... [continue]

Every so often when we feel so inspired to do so, we feature a photo from a photographer in the LAist Flickr Pool. It's another way of giving the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention that they deserve. Everyone knows Santa Monica College has a radio station (KCRW 89.9). And CSUN (KCSN 88.5) and CSULB (KJAZZ 88.1) too. Even Pasadena City College (KPCC 89.3) and USC (KUSC 91.5) have theirs. Where is UCLA's?...... [continue]
Sometimes Watt sends out pictures of found objects that he comes across while pedaling around Pedro. My favorite thing about this photo is Watt's DIY self-painted helmet on the ground. True, he probably took it off to look through the viewfinder of the camera. But it also makes me wonder just a little bit whether he was going to try on the hat....... [continue]

Most of us point, shoot and load our photos into Flickr. And then there are some who scan in old photos such as Alan Light. Above is a photo taken outside the Viper Room in 1994, the year after River Phoenix's early morning Halloween death. Fans graffitied the wall between the club and what is now a cigar shop. Today, that wall is painted beige. Almost 10 years later to the day, singer/songwriter Elliot...... [continue]
