Good luck!
If you missed 90210 the first time around, it's hard to explain. It was an instantaneous, un-self-aware camp classic. It was absolutely unwatchable while demanding that you HAD TO WATCH. Tori Spelling, before becoming the wronged daughter, the wedded-and-babied reality show chick, was simply a spoiled, freakishly untalented actress -- who was cast, in her daddy's show, as the eternal virgin (eew!). Ian Ziering, before he danced with the stars, played the cool guy -- until the producers noticed that everyone hated him, and they made him the buffoon.
The producers never noticed how much audiences hated Brenda. Or if they did, they ignored it. Soldier on, they thought, and barged ahead with classic episodes like the time when Brandon's evil girlfriend dosed everyone with Euphoria.
See, it was so camp, they couldn't say even "ecstasy" -- they had to come up with another word meaning "rapturous delight" that also began with an E. Imagine all the doctoral thesis on simulacra that followed. Or don't. We're talking about hating Brenda here.
Her stupid bangs. Her self-centered outbursts. Her strange penchant for wide collars and prim outfits. Her indecision about Dylan. Her whining. Her teeth. Her dumb dark lipstick (wait, the dark lipstick was cool). Anyway, she was so hate-able that the early zine geniuses behind Ben Is Dead started putting out a newsletter called I Hate Brenda.
The producers might not have noticed, but Shannen Doherty, the woman who brought Brenda to life, did. She tells Entertainment Weekly that she still harbors insecurities from all the hate. But a newsletter -- that wasn't all. Not nearly. As one fans tells it, the I Hate Brenda newsletter morphed into a CD, "Hating Brenda," eight whole songs worth. It was put together by a bunch of friends of the magazine, all LA musicians, many from bands that seemed to be in the middle of breaking up.
The best track was soon recorded again by a not-broken-up band that included the songwriter, which hadn't performed it on the official hateful CD (long story). You may never get the song -- or vision of the bass player in his dress and wig -- out of your head. To celebrate the revival of "Beverly Hills, 90210," -- which we wouldn't even watch except for that kid from The Wire* -- here is "Every Day is Brenda Day."
* We are so lying. We'll watch anyway. We might have some Euphoria nearby to ease the pain, but we'll watch.
After Monday night's Radiohead concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Sean Carlson and a friend were passing out flyers for this weekend's F Yeah Fest while their friend Michael Reich of Videothing.com was filming them for a documentary. An incident with the venue's contract security firm and another patron happened to occur in front of them and security didn't like that it was being filmed ("'What the fuck do you think you're filming?' and grabbed at the camera," said an eyewitness of a security guard from the company CSC).
Story told short (like we did yesterday), after Sean was pushed to the ground by a security guard, they decided to get out of there. But before they could get too far, a foot chase ensued because the security guards allegedly said "that shit's going to be on YouTube. We gotta get that tape."
Needless to say, after running through the streets, over and around car hoods, the boys got a bit roughed up, as told thoroughly in LA Weekly. In the end, Reich says security got the tape and hasn't seen it since.
Above are some photos of Sean's injuries. It could have been worse, but still, who deserves this after one of the best bands in the world?
There is so much hyperbole and exaggeration that can be attached to the live performance of Radiohead. In their 15 or so years on the music scene their rise has been one of steady incline and pure consistency. A first time attendance of a Radiohead show generally yields responses like ?Worth every bit of hype? ?Awe- inspiring? and ?Life changing.? As a first time attendee Monday night at the Bowl, let me tell you the Radiohead live experience is most certainly worth the hype, most certainly awe inspiring and nothing short of life changing.Ok, while the last may be a bit of that exaggeration I was describing at the outset, Monday night?s performance, the second of two nights at the Bowl, was something that I will remember for a long time. I have long been a fan of this band and would even go as far to say that they are one of the best bands of this generation and while that may draw the ire and eye rolling of many who claim them to be arrogant and pretentious, I dare them to make these claims after attending one of these live performances. With each album and each accompanying tour, Thom Yorke and co. continue to prove this claim true and this recent run only furthered this reputation.
The 27 song set, yes 27 (and so many hits were left off the setlist!), spanned the entirety of the catalogue of the group. From the rock driven hits off the breakout album The Bends, to the experimental electo-rock tracks on Amnesiac and Kid A and heavy on the newest, groundbreaking album, In Rainbows, there literally was something for everyone.
The setlist varied by a whopping 10 songs or so from the previous night?s performance and featured some rarities that have rarely been played or haven?t been played in ages. Thom Yorke?s solo song ?Cymbal Rush?, a great impromptu cover of the Neil Young song ?Tell Me Why? and a personal favorite ?True Love Waits? made for quite the special evening. In an almost organic connectivity the band grew more and more comfortable with their audience and it was apparent in the quality and appeal of their performance. The band was ensconced in a cube-like structure of fluorescent tubes that changed colors with each song and proved a trance educing visual accompaniment for each song.
There really isn't anything more I can add that hasn't already been said about this band. They truly have become the standard for today?s rock scene both musically and business wise. Anyone who has denied this band or has shunned them because of their pretension must see them live as it truly is rock music at its finest.

The stage is set for Barack Obama to accept the Democratic Party nomination for president | Photo by Rocky Mountain News via flickr.
Unless you've been living underground or roaming the state trying to start fires, you're well aware that tonight Barack Obama will finally accept the nomination as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States after 19 months of campaigning. He'll do so at the 50-yard-line of the elaborately decked-out Mile High stadium (or Invesco Field, or where the Broncos play) in Denver, before 80,000 people.
The word of the evening will undoubtedly be historic (if not ridiculous) as the likes of Stevie Wonder, will.i.am, Olympian Shawn Johnson, and Michael McDonald will grace the stage sandwiched by the likes of Al Gore, Bill Richardson, and a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who delievered his "I Have a Dream" speech on this day 40 years ago (see the full schedule -- in Denver time -- here).
So what are you gonna do about it? Where will you be watching if at all? Anyone up for The Barack Obama Acceptance Speech Drinking Game or Obama Bingo? UPDATE: The link on the map is outdated -- if you're still looking for a place to watch Obama's speech in a festive atmosphere, try Generation Obama's shindig at Cinespace.

An 11:00 p.m. street race on Colorado Blvd. (b/w Eagle Rock Blvd & Townsend Ave.) in Eagle Rock claimed the lives of three people last night. Included in the dead are a pregnant woman who was driving, a teenage girl in the back seat and a man who was ejected onto the street. News reports to not clearly indicate if they were involved in the race or not. Two others were transported to the hospital in "grave condition." The driver of another car involved in the accident, who was street racing, was arrested on the scene. The cars must have been going at a "high rate of speed," d'Lisa Davies said at the LA Fire Department to LAist when the crash first happened as details were just coming out. "It's pretty mangled too," she said of the car wrapped around the tree. A third car that fled the scene is suspected to be involved in the crash as well.
A new poll conducted by the Public Policy Insititute of California has come out showing three state proposition on the November ballot as losing or nearly even in outcome. Prop 8, which seeks to eliminate gay marriage in California, is losing, according to the poll. However, when it comes to favoring gay couples marrying, people are still evenly split. From the document's findings:
Proposition 8, which would amend the state constitution to eliminate same-sex marriage, is favored by 40 percent and opposed by 54 percent of the state?s likely voters. Democratic (66%) and independent likely voters (59%) are against it, and Republican likely voters are in favor (60%). The last time voters decided this issue ? in 2000 ? they approved a ban on same-sex marriages by a wide margin (61% yes, 39% no). After the state Supreme Court ruled that ban unconstitutional, supporters of Proposition 8 qualified the initiative for the 2008 ballot.Opposition to Proposition 8 this year is not an indication of a dramatic shift in voters? opinions. Asked whether they favor letting gay and lesbian couples marry, likely voters are evenly split (47% in favor, 47% opposed) and have been since August 2005. Also playing a role in the November outcome is how strongly voters feel about the issue. A majority of likely voters (57%) in favor of Proposition 8 say it is a very important issue to them, while less than half (44%) of those opposed to the measure consider it a very important issue.
Proposition 4, which would require 48 hours of parental notification for minors, is found to be nearly split among voters (a similar initiative failed in 2005) and Proposition 11, a redistricting measure (a similar initiative also failed in 2005), is also found to be divided among voters.

Joe Saunders left after only 1 1/3 innings. AP Photo/Gus Ruelas
Oakland A's defeat LA Angels 6-5. Joe Saunders left the game in the second inning. Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar left the game with sore hammies. Outfielder Juan Rivera forced to come into the game at second base. It was one of those games for the Angels yet they managed to make it close. With Joe Saunders pitching with an ailing hand, he was absolutely crushed by the A's giving up six runs in two innings. He left the game, and the bullpen clamped down on the A's. But the Angels would come back, and they had many chances to actually take the lead but could not capitalize on all the walks the A's were giving away. The Angels got nine hits and eight balls but did their best impersonation of the Dodgers. The difference though is that the Angels actually have the ability to win games.
Washington Nationals defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. Sorry Greg Maddux. Maybe you should've stayed with San Diego after all. Yeah the Dodgers hit three homers, but they still lost to the WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL. Twice. Meanwhile they stay three games behind the Diamondbacks because they lost to the third worst team in baseball (San Diego Padres). Thrice. At this rate Bud Selig should just ban the NL West from sending a team into the postseason. Notable Notes
- The San Diego Charger's outstanding linebacker Shawne Merriman decided to forgo surgery on his left knee and play the season. Merriman injured his left knee against the Tennessee Titans last December tearing his posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments. He managed to play the rest of the 2007 season and into the AFL Championship Game in the playoffs, but he got four different opinions from doctors each telling him to get season-ending surgery. Does anyone outside of the Charger organization think this is a good decision?
- You know things are slow in sports when the talk shows are focused on the LPGA forcing their players to speak English. With college football starting today, couldn't there be anything else to talk about? Like wondering who will be this year's Appalachian State?

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a piece of legislation on Monday that changes the language in Proposition 1, the high speed rail bond.
Now it will be Proposition 1a, but there's a problem: the voter guides have already been printed with Prop 1 language, not Prop 1a's. Therefore, an additional voter guide will have to be printed at the cost of approximately $4 million, according to Secretary of State Debra Bowen.
Schwarzenegger, who is big on fixing the budget deficit, could have signed the bill before it went to the printer, but he chose not to in order to make a point. He told the state legislature earlier this month that he would veto all bills put on his desk until the state budget was passed, which was due on July 1st. On Monday, he reversed that decision for a few bills that he supported.
File this under things you need to read to get that warm fuzzy feeling: "For four years, police have known that a single madman is out there, a man whose audacity and sick good luck have made him the most enduring serial killer in California history and the longest-operating serial killer west of the Mississippi. In 1988, he stopped the slaughter for more than 13 years, then killed again in 2002 and 2003. L.A. Weekly has learned that he is actively murdering Angelenos again..."
Via Xeni Jardin at boingboing, we find that Radiohead is doing a live webcast of tonight's concert at The Bowl in Santa Barbara. "It's one of our favourite places to play; I think we've ended tours there before," Colin Greenwood wrote in an e-mail. "It's not too big, in fact it's very intimate, a small arena with a dirt floor, set in pretty countryside. It should be a special night, for lots of reasons, and we're going to try and share as much of it as we can on the webcast. Nigel, our producer, will be helping out getting it to you, so if it goes wrong....It's live!" More details can be found on their website. Also: Photos from the show & controversy after the show.
Suffering from post-Olympic sports withdrawal? Head hurting from Manny Hangover? A dose of NASCAR might be just what the doctor ordered.
This weekend, NASCAR comes to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The Pepsi 500 on Sunday is one of two races remaining before NASCAR?s version of the playoffs, the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship (nicknamed ?The Chase?).
We caught up with Casey Mears, driver of the #5 Cheez-It/CARQUEST Chevrolet. Casey talks about growing up in Bakersfield, the fine line between cheating and doing your job, and getting a side of owner points with his new Jack Daniel?s Chevrolet.
What?s special for you about the Fontana race?
The first thing is that it?s in California. A lot of my friends and family show up for that race. It?s a good place to catch up with them. To win there and be successful at that track with everyone watching would be nice. What do you do with friends and family when you?re back in California?
Most of them just come to the racetrack. I stay there in the motor home lot at the racetrack. My brother and my grandparents and all of them usually pull their motor homes in. We just hang out at night, relax and catch up.
A lot of times they?ll bring my favorite foods that I miss from California. I usually try to shoot up to Bakersfield to see other family when I have time. I catch up with my grandmother.
What are some of the favorite foods from California that you miss?
They?ll bring some pasta up from Luigi?s, a restaurant I really like in Bakersfield. Another thing I really enjoy is the chile verde that my family makes. Usually they?ll bring a big pot of it. It?s just stuff you can?t get in North Carolina.
Are you a fan of the Bakersfield sound?
I have always been a fan of music, period. I like country. I like rock and a little bit of rap here and there. I really like Nickelback and O.A.R. [Of a Revolution]. For country, I like Toby Keith.
You were really good in ?Talladega Nights.? Aside from you, which NASCAR driver would make the best Hollywood actor?
Jeff [Gordon] did Saturday Night Live. I was really impressed with how well he did. Based on that, he?s the guy that?s probably been around that scene the most and would take to it the best.
Which Hollywood actor would make the best driver?
Patrick Dempsey. He likes to race on the side. He understands the sport enough to be a realistic race car driver.
What celebrities have you seen at recent racing events?
The lead singer of Smash Mouth [Steve Harwell]. He comes out to quite a few races. He always came out to a lot of Indy Car. I think he?s gotten involved in some drag racing.
Nick Lachey and Jimmie Johnson have become pretty close. Nick?s come to several races here and there.
Speaking of your Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, what?s it like at team meetings after you wreck each other?
We all understand that a teammate is the last person you want to take out. The last thing you want is to go back to the hauler after a race or to a team meeting the next week and be involved in one of those scenarios. Typically, when that happens, it gets brushed off because we all know each other and get along. We know if something happens it?s a complete mistake. It doesn?t go past the next week.
What goes through your mind when you?re getting into a wreck?
It happens so fast. I?m always trying to save it all the way until I hit the fence. As soon as that thing starts to spin, you?re working the steering, working the gas throttle, trying not to hit anything, trying all you can to avoid hitting the wall. You?re always working. Then if you do hit the wall, it?s over. If you?re hurt, you realize that after it?s over. If you?re not hurt, you?re just ticked off ?cause you wrecked.
We hear over the scanners and on TV what you?re saying to each other. What?s the funniest thing you?ve ever heard on your scanner?
The funniest thing I ever heard was at Bristol. I had a crew chief [Jimmy Elledge] who was actually from California but he?d been in North Carolina for about fifteen or twenty years and had picked up an enormous redneck accent. Kyle Petty had gotten in a crash and I was just riding around under caution. Kyle had hit something so hard it actually ripped the battery box out of the side of his car. It?s hard to explain where the battery box is located, but for that to come out indicates it?s a pretty hard hit. My crew chief came over the radio and goes, ?Gosh dang, that car right there done slung the battery slap out of it!? I got back on the radio and said, ?Done. Slung. The battery.? Then I just started busting up laughing.
How long did it take for the North Carolina accent to start rubbing off on you?
Not long. Bakersfield?s not a whole lot different. There are a lot of people in Bakersfield whose families came from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and places like that. It?s all farm country and oil. Country music was big. I think I already had a little bit of an accent but I didn?t know I had it. When I would go down to San Diego or LA, people would say, ?Man, where you from? You from Texas?? And now that I?m in North Carolina it definitely gets stronger unless I focus on not letting it go in that direction.
What?s up with all the cheating? How do you feel when there?s a blatant rules violation like we heard about last week?
I?ve never been involved personally with a real blatant issue with my crew chief. In the NASCAR rules there are a lot of gray areas. There?s a lot of stuff that doesn?t necessarily define exactly how you have to do it. I?ve had crew chiefs that pushed that envelope enough to get a small fine or a penalty.

It?s our jobs as race teams to try to get all we can out of these race cars. If you never get a warning from NASCAR, then you?re not doing your job by pushing that envelope. If somebody does something very blatant that?s way outside the rules, it would be disappointing as a driver to lose owner points on something you worked hard on all year on, but I?ve never been a part of that. Fortunately I?ve been on the good side of that.
What changes would you like to see in the next version of the ?Car of Tomorrow??
The biggest thing we need to work on is getting the cars to race better together in drafts. The current aerodynamics of the car don?t cater to being able to do really close racing. We need to work on the body itself, how much downforce it has. Getting the cars more comfortable around each other would be key.
When you have a sponsor like Kellogg?s, Cheez-Its and Pop Tarts, do you get a lot of their products?
Sure, if we request it. They?re a great company so they set us up. The team definitely gets a lot of products. There are tons of cereals and snacks on the trucks for the guys. It depends on the sponsor. I had a fuel sponsor in the past but I didn?t necessarily get free gas.
Nowadays everyone is very fuel conscious. You had a great fuel strategy when you won the Coca-Cola 600 last year [Mears won by not refueling in the last laps, running out of gas moments after crossing the finish line].
That was a huge win. The thing I was really excited about that night was just how competitive we were. We ran inside the Top 5 all night long and at the end made a great call on fuel strategy to win the race. It worked out really well. Obviously fuel prices are pretty high these days wherever you go but I don?t know how much I can repeat that race plan.

How empty do you let your fuel tank get in real life?
I?m a little paranoid about running out of gas in real life. I don?t want to run out on the freeway. I try to keep ?er topped off.
What makes a good victory burnout?
If I were to do a burnout, it would be from adrenaline. I?d just be excited and want to do something. When you?re inside the car, there?s no way to really express yourself but to do a burnout or do something with the car. There are some guys who?ve kind of patented their things they do in Victory Lane. I guess that?s okay. I?ve always respected the guys like Terry Labonte and Ricky Rudd who just won a race, drove to Victory Lane and were proud of the job they did. They didn?t flaunt it a whole lot, just enjoyed it.
Do you ever get pulled over?
Not very often. I?m usually cruising around when I?m out on the street. I get my racing done on the weekends.
So it sounds like you have been pulled over. What?s it like?
It depends where you?re at. I got a couple of speeding tickets early on. Fortunately, the last couple of times I got pulled over it was around my neighborhood where they know and understand racing. We got in from a race at 3 o?clock in the morning. We weren?t trying to speed, just trying to get home. The officer was pretty cool. I got off with a warning.
Did he know who you were?
Yeah.
Where do you get recognized the most?
The racetrack. That?s why people come there. To see the drivers and the track. Sometimes in a restaurant. But I can fly under the radar pretty good.
What?s up with your sponsor for next year? Are you definitely going to take the 07 car [sponsored by Jack Daniel?s, currently driven by Clint Bowyer] and all of its owner points when you go over to Richard Childress Racing next year?
Yeah. That?s the deal. I?ll be in the Jack Daniel?s 07. It comes with whatever points they finish with this year. That?s what we?ll start off with next season.
How do you feel about that? On the one hand, you automatically qualify for a bunch of races next year, but on the other hand they?re kind of Clint Bowyer?s points. [The top 35 cars at the end of 2008 automatically qualify for the first 5 races next season.]
I feel fine with it. I think from Clint?s standpoint he wishes he had those points going into next year. But that?s just the way it panned out with the sponsor and the team. It?s the scenario I?ve been given. It?s a good scenario. I?m looking forward to next season.
Maybe LAist should sponsor a car. Which driver would be the best match?
Depends. How much money are you willing to spend?
We don?t have any money. It?s just a thought experiment.
Everybody?s pretty much up to speed on the Internet stuff these days. Hard to say who would be the best person for that job.

What would you tell a new fan of NASCAR to look for when they watch a race?
The first thing I would get is a scanner. One of those Sprint FanView deals. That?s the best way to understand what?s going on -- to listen to the spotters, and listen to the drivers. That?s what a lot of people don?t understand when they go to a race. They just think it?s someone going in a circle. But when they realize the strategy, they understand what we do. I think the scanners are a good way to get a new fan up to speed.
Anything else you?d like to tell the readers of LAist?
Just that I?m looking forward to being back in California and hope to see a lot of fans out at the racetrack this weekend.

Fans of LA's ubiquitous Taco Trucks rejoice: The ordinance passed in April has been overturned, and the vittles vehicles can park and serve in unincorporated LA County to their hearts' content for more than one hour at a time.
Yesterday in LA County Superior Court a judge overturned the controversial law. According to the LA Times:
The language of the ordinance, Judge Dennis A. Aichroth said, was "vague" and therefore "unconstitutional" in its description of how quickly a vendor could return to an area where the truck was previously parked. Aichroth said it also violated the vehicle code because county supervisors had not properly established that it was written in the interest of public safety.
The law angered not only the taco truck owners and operators, but the many customers who counted on and appreciated the trucks for their fast and reliable food. Although the City of Los Angeles was not a part of the law, East LA, an area known for its many taco trucks, was included. (In fact, the first truck to be hit with a fine once the law went into effect was in East LA.) Under the law, if trucks remained parked in one location for over an hour they were ticketed and fined up to $1,000 and owners potentially faced a six-month jail term. The backlash was widespread, from C. Thi Nguyen, senior editor of Chow Digest at chowhound.com, deeming the threat to the taco trucks "a cultural disaster" to the movement initiated by SaveOurTacoTrucks.org, who gathered signatures and even sold t-shirts promoting support for the tacos-on-wheels.
So go get your tacos, Angelenos, and know that your favorite truck can stay put and serve you what you love. Haven't done the truck thing before? Use our Basic Guide to LA Taco Trucks to get you started.

A poll released yesterday by the Public Policy Institute of California showed that voters are split nearly evenly over Prop 4 (parental notification of minors having abortions), with 47 percent in favor and 44 percent opposed. Polls were similarly split in the past, when attempts were made to pass nearly identical measures (Prop 73 in 2005 and Prop 85 in 2006), and the initiatives were nevertheless defeated both times.
Republican voters show the most support for the measure, with 62 percent in favor.

Supposedly NBC is beating the ratings battle with this week's broadcast of the DNCC in Denver. We've listed PBS below because when you've got a commercial-free option, go for it. True we're not listing C-SPAN, but even we have standards.
Despite posting a second quarter of profitability, Tivo's stock got pummeled yesterday because their profit did not meet analyst predictions. Despite competition from cable networks, the Tivo interface seems to be the best, so it would be a shame to see this company go down or be absorbed by another entity.
