Cartoonist B. Kliban once advised, "Never eat anything bigger than your head." But what did he know? He also thought cats should play banjos.

Cupcake Challenge: Pretty Pleased With Frosting on Top
Yesterday's sold-out Nesquik Cupcake Challenge put on by Drink:Eat:Play drew hundreds of cupcake enthusiasts to gobble up 37 varieties of cupcakes up for grabs by more than a baker's dozen of LA's cupcakeries. The tasters' tasks were two-fold; on top of the obvious eat, drink, and be merry trifecta, everyone there was presented with a ballot, and asked to vote on their top three favorites in three categories: Best Traditional, Best Original, and Best Overall.

Street Food Themed Restaurant Releases Menu
Inspired by street foods from around the world, Susan Feniger's Street in Hollywood will serve you up such items as Malaysian black pepper clams, Egyptian style baked fish and Cuban stuffed potato cakes. "The food pushes people a bit," Feniger told the LA Times earlier this month. "The idea is to experience something new without having it be risky. . . . I love to have people learn about things that they've never eaten before."

Red Meat and Eggs: Killers of the Week!
Check your fridges, citizens -- those eggs you fried up for breakfast might be toxic! Yep, it's another major salmonella recall, this time for Costco's Kirkland brand organic brand eggs. Information on the recall and plant codes can be found here. And while you're in there, you might want to toss the hamburgers and steaks as well: those of you who consume more than 4 ounces of red meat a day are at a 30% higher risk for cancer and heart disease, according to a new study of over 500,000 Americans. Now might be a good time to pick up a flexitarian diet.

Desperately Seeking Thin Mints
It used to be impossible to diet during Girl Scout Cookie season. They were everywhere. Then slowly the munchkins stopped going door to door, and the cookie stands at shopping centers have limited hours. Nowadays unless you have a coworker taping an order form up in the lunchroom, hunting Girl Scouts can be a major undertaking. Especially for us night owls.

Yum! Susan Feniger's Street Food Themed Restaurant to Open Soon
Walking up La Brea this afternoon, we stopped by the location for Susan Feniger's new restaurant Street. The site is still under construction, but the new sign is up. We peeked in to find Feniger standing near the door and couldn't resist asking her for some details. "When will Street open?" we eagerly asked.. Feniger, with a big smile on her face, said, "In a few weeks!" It looks like there is still a good amount of work left to do to get the space ready for opening. We will definitely head over to check it out when she starts cooking to new dishes for her street food concept menu.
'Carniwhore' Alert: NY Times Gets 'pork-selective' in LA, Butchers Palate
The New York Times' Frank Bruni came to Los Angeles, and all he got was pork. Well, that's not entirely true, but he did get a menu's worth of pig-meat when he dined at Animal in West Hollywood, and deemed the restaurant so-so, unless you have a pork fetish:
[It] isn’t a great restaurant, or at least it wasn’t when I tried it. But it’s the epitome of a promiscuously meaty approach to cooking that might well be called the carniwhore school.Bruni recounts the plethora of pork belly on the app menu ("pork belly with kimchi in an Asian preparation" or "house-smoked pork belly with lentils") then noted the pig-plenty on the entrees list ("a pork chop, pork ribs or a pork foot, also known as a trotter"), and even found a little piggy available for dessert (" the house-made bacon chocolate crunch bar"). Other pork names being dropped: "chorizo (with melted Spanish cheese), slab bacon (as an accessory for fried quail), veal sweetbreads, marrow bones or chicken livers," and "foie gras" that "comes on a biscuit that’s doused in maple syrup and gravy, and the gravy includes pork sausage."

Map of the Day: Irish Pubs, English Pubs, Your Pubs
Here is our handy dandy guide to finding your car tomorrow morning when you wake up covered in green glitter wearing a stranger's golf shoes with nothing but a smudged taxi receipt in your pocket.
Now here's the fun part. Anyone can edit this map. And that means you. Did we miss your favorite Irish watering hole? Does one of the bars on the map totally suck? You have the power.
Eat Me! I'm Irish!
This post is in no way meant to malign corned beef and cabbage, which is actually really good when made properly. But it's always nice to try something new. Last year the Beef Braised in Guinness went over well. This year we are here to bring you even more Irishy goodness.
Tender Greens Opens 3rd Location in West Hollywood
The popular Culver City healthy, eco-friendly, fast-casual eatery Tender Greens is making a WeHo debut tomorrow just before lunchtime. Special to this location, Chef Fermin Arias will make house-made cheese, vinegars and salumi in addition to the usual fresh-to-order salads, sandwiches and hot plates that make up their menu. The Santa Monica Blvd. location--between San Vicente and La Cienega--is in the new loft and townhome development, the Hancock Lofts. A third Tender Greens is in San Diego.

Secessionist California Pig Farmers Swear Revenge on 'Hollywood Types'
Rural California is seceding from the urban coast? Well, if industrial pig farmers have anything to do with it, cities like Visalia, Tulare, and Fresno will soon be working to separate themselves from the heathen-vegan coast! The reason? It's all because we took their chicken coops away from them -- or, at least, because we fought against current agro-industrial standards for livestock health and welfare.
The Cupcake Will Never Die: Crumbs Expands to Calabasas
This last Saturday, Crumbs Bake Shop opened their doors on yet another location, this time in the West Valley city of Calabasas. And in the tradition of their grand openings, they'll celebrate by giving 1,000 cupcakes away next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. That's one per person, first come, first serve. At previous openings like at Glendale and Beverly Hills, there were lines around the block before the shops even opened, and the free cupcakes were gone well before lunchtime. And if that's not enough indulgence for you, another Crumbs location is slated to open in Malibu in the yet-to-come shopping center, The Lumber Yard, across from the Country Mart.
Comme Ça: A Real Bistro on Melrose
Brunch at Comme Ça (Chef David Myers of Sona) is quite a treat. I had not done DineLA Restaurant Week there as they had priced themselves in the $44 category, which would have cost $1-4 more than the menu. Even so, I could not resist the temptation of eating here at lunch.
The Return of the Guinness Cupcake
No one really likes green beer or Shamrock Shakes. And corned beef and cabbage is iffy at best.

X Bar's Astrology Cocktails: Hey, Baby, What's Your Sign?
What better way for a Los Angeles bar to celebrate our city than with astrology cocktails? Yup, X Bar in Century City, has perhaps the funnest theme cocktail menu idea we've seen in a long time. They have created 12 cocktails ($12 each) to represent the zodiac signs and will only serve each sign's cocktail during the dates of that particular sign. Not clear? Well, right now since we're in Pisces, so you can try the Pisces cocktail through March 21, followed up by the Aries cocktail.

What's Obama Doing For the Food Industry?
Although perhaps a certain segment of the population believes he should be throwing red paint on fur-coated old ladies and boycotting West Hollywood restaurants that serve foie gras, President Obama has actually been doing a pretty good job heeding Michael Pollan's call to real action within the American food industry.

Man Dies After Eating Mushrooms Picked in a Park
If you are into urban foraging, beware of the consequences if you are not savvy to what you pick. A man in Santa Barbara died last week after chose the wrong mushrooms in a park to saute with his steak. "The man had picked poisonous amanita ocreata mushrooms, which are common in the Santa Barbara area, at the Douglas Family Preserve above Arroyo Burro Beach," reported the Associated Press. Six hours after eating his meal, he was in the hospital.

New Happy Hour: Copa d'Oro's $5 Classic Cocktails
New Santa Monica bar, Copa d'Oro, has kicked off its new happy hour featuring a "happy depression menu." So now you can enjoy some of their fabulous market-fresh cocktails for only $5! And we're not talking the sort of drinks you usually find at happy hours around the city. No apple martinis or mixed well cocktails, but actual vintage favorites.
Gordon Ramsay -- Get The F@$* Out of Here!
Maybe he should have gone into the taco business? Famed British hothead & restaurateur Gordon Ramsay is selling his WeHo outpost Gordon Ramsay at The London West Hollywood (maybe the name was a problem?), thanks to slow business and Ramsay's own financial troubles. Despite fairly positive reviews and a good location, Ramsay just couldn't seem to overcome the irony of his absence from a "celeb chef!!"-driven establishment. Or maybe it was...the foie gras? (I kid!)

Famima! Explosion: 5th Downtown Location to Open Tomorrow
Tomorrow, Famima is opening a new store at 700 Wilshire. Next week, another is expected to open at the Roosevelt Building and by the end of May, one more at Union Station. When all is said and done, downtown will have seven Famimas. And beyond that, the company hopes to open 20 in the region by the end of 2009 including ones in West LA and another in Pasadena (however, none are planned for the Valley, sad). The new resurgence of hyper-local convenience stores is a good sign for downtown's growth (not to mention the "upscale" 7-11 that is on it's way), but it comes with unfortunate news: the family owned Bloom's convenience store in the Arts District closed its doors last week after 15 years. Also: Hollywood recently gained an eco-conscious convenience store, called Locali. You can buy vegan condoms there.
