The community showed its support (and its money) for local artists at Sunday's Monster Drawing Rally at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock. About 500 people attended the non-profit Outpost for Contemporary Arts' event, which raised $12,000 and sold 100 paintings.

The multi-talented Highland Park-based indie popsters Artichoke played a bumblebee-themed set just after a few of their members participated in the rally by drawing up a storm in one hour. While artists did their thing, spectators scarfed down pulled pork sliders from Oinkster and drank up Fat Tire & Skinny Dip beer.

"There's something about watching the creative process," said live painter Max Neutra. He said he usually paints in blocks of five to 6six hours, and working within one hour side-by-side with other artists during the rally allows participants to "experience so many different things."

A handful of paintings not sold at the event will be available for $50 at Outpost's headquarters, 1268 Ave 50, Los Angeles, 90042; check their website for updates to see which works are for sale.

Somewhere in Los Angeles is wall that attracts some of the big names of the street art world. Not many know about it and those within street art circles keep it close to heart. There's a good reason for that--some like to take the street from the art for personal home decoration. So when an anonymous tipster made LAist savvy of this spot, it was under the condition that we not publish the location. "Just share the visuals," they wrote.

"L.A. needs more spots like that," said Elisa Carmichael, street art expert and co-owner of Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art in West Hollywood, when we showed her our photos for help in identification (find the artist names in the captions above). And we wholeheartedly agree with her. Life in Los Angeles could use more "easter eggs" like this.

Recently interviewed on Juxtapoz, Brooklyn-based artist Imminent Disaster, who is influenced by historical characters, talked about the difference between gallery and street art. "On the streets, the texture and patina are given to you by your environment, whereas in the gallery, you are given blank space that you have to build up yourself," she said. "The street sets certain contextual elements for you…in the gallery the work has to stand alone."

But what happens when a location, such as this secret one, becomes an ad hoc gallery of street art?

Related: The Creepy, Yet Beautiful Street Art of Dan Witz Now in L.A.

The Mayor's office has indicated that Ciclovia may be coming to Los Angeles in early 2010. What is that? "For the uninitiated, the city of Bogota put on the first Ciclovia decades ago by closing several of its main streets to cars and opening them to pedestrians and cyclists on Sundays," explains Newton. "Over the years, a culture developed around these gigantic street parties. Citizens literally pack the streets taking their bikes, joining group exercises and dances or just taking a walk free from the interference of the automobile."

L.A. a Loser for Stimulus Money

For example, the graph to the right shows transportation and infrastructure funding via grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). New York City is the big win and San Diego is slightly edging out Los Angeles.

So what's the problem? "A decentralized approach to finding, applying for and managing grants" might be one of the huge problems, finds writer Paresh Dave of NeonTommy in talks with Jim Clarke, the mayor's director for federal relations. "There's much more we could do up front. ARRA funding has brought to our attention that the city needs to have a more centralized system, and we are in the process of finding out what the best practices are."

Questions is, when said best practices are figured out, how many more stimulus grants will we have lost out on?

And it's not just ARRA money. Check this map out to see how L.A. compares to the rest of the country in federal New Starts transit money:

Now this discrepancy is not necessarily the failure to win grants, but to have projects in the pipeline or have Metro Board members agree which projects to submit. But this year, the Board agreed to submit two projects: the regional connector and the westside subway. That, however, was not a choice without controversy. A delegation of 14 members of congress thought other projects should be submitted.

Diagnosed in December, he is taking oral medication, seeing his specialist every other month and getting his blood analyzed regularly to fight the leukemia. He has a Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia where blood and bone marrow produces cancerous cells. Despite the stigma of the word "leukemia" many patients who are treated for chronic myeloid leukemia can control the disease without it advancing and should be able to lead a normal productive life. Abdul-Jabbar said the disease should not interfere with his work as special coach for the Lakers. Best wishes to the Captain.

Do Red Light Cameras Make Intersections More Dangerous?

The City says no, that intersections with red light cameras are not more dangerous with them, pointing out that red light runner crashes are down. That may be true, but an investigative report by CBS2 finds that accidents are up at most of the red-light camera intersections if you include crashes caused by people stopping earlier than expected to avoid running a red light.

Based on data six months before and after cameras was installed, 20 intersections experienced an increase in crashes, eight intersections saw fewer crashes and three held at the same amount (see a map).

So the big question for investigative reporter David Goldstein, are these just cash cows for the city? In 2008, the city made $4 million from red light camera tickets. And to boot, "Montclaire, Upland, El Monte and Fullerton all discontinued red-light cameras in part because of accidents," he says. "Huntington Beach broke its contract before it even officially began."

Now, Orange County is developing a new system, which will launch this Thursday, that will deploy volunteers in and around county wilderness areas during Red Flag conditions. The OC Fire Watch program will also include

OC Parks will coordinate the deployment of OC Fire Watch volunteers in and around the County’s wilderness areas during designated Red Flag conditions. The Orange County Fire Department will train the fire watch volunteers in communication procedures and map reading, as well as how to recognize and report potentially dangerous situations.

The program will also include the raising of "Fire Alert" flags (see image) all around the county to inform the public that it is a red flag day.

Photo by Darren Shannon via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr

This is local government at its finest, folks. Last year when then-City Countroller Laura Chick tried to audit then-City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, a lawsuit against Chick was brought forth. At issue? Chick wanted to audit the City Attorney's workers compensation program, but Delgadillo balked, throwing a lawsuit in the way. More broadly, the question being asked in the lawsuit, does the elected City Controller have the power to audit another elected official?

Now both Chick and Delgadillo are out of office and newly elected officials are here, being forced to deal with it. And in no surprises to anyone, now the current officeholders--City Controller Wendy Greuel and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich--are fighting about it, although in a different manner.

"Trutanich said the best way to establish the scope of the city controller's powers is through a Charter amendment. The City Council, meanwhile, refused to drop the lawsuit to avoid the prospect of being saddled with Chick and Greuel's attorney's fees," explains the Daily News.

The ruling against the Chick is expected to be finalized today.

This comes after urging of many, including County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who represents the area.

The Line would run about 11 miles, from Exposition and Crenshaw (also home to a future Expo Line station) to the Metro Green Line Aviation/LAX station. Proposed stations, via a committee document (.pdf), would be Exposition/Crenshaw, Crenshaw/Martin Luther King Jr., Crenshaw/Slauson, Florence/West, Florence/La Brea, Aviation/Manchester (optional), Aviation/Century. A station is also being considered at Crenshaw/Vernon.

8.5 miles of the line will run above surface, with about 2.5 miles running underground, according to the LA Times.

The recommendation will go before Metro Board of Director’s planning committee on November 18th.

[For the Record: An earlier version of this post stated that the recommendation would go forward to the full Metro Board of Directors, not the planning committee.]

He successfully guided a little known junior senator from Illinois to the highest echelon of national power while galvanizing an electorate burnt out from eight years of rancorous political discourse. In, "The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama's Historic Victory," Plouffe details the campaign from its infancy to present day. He takes us on a highly detailed journey in which he initially demurred at the prospect of managing the campaign, through the difficulties of the two-year campaign and the ultimate elation felt after America elected its first black president. He joined us Monday for a chat about what that experience was like, why he was surprised by McCain's campaigns tactics and what lies ahead for the architect of Change as he readies for an appearance Tuesday in Pasadena.

David, welcome to LAist. Thanks for speaking with us
Thanks for taking an interest.

You seemed to have agonized over whether or not to manage Obama's campaign due to a plethora of personal and professional issues. What would your life be like if you had said no and what would have happened if someone else was at the helm?
Well, I think we would have had the same outcome. I would have been heavily involved in the campaign just as an adviser, not as a manager. [We] don't really put a lot of stock in the celebration of staff. Some people have asked, 'Well, if you guys had run Hillary's campaign, would she have won,' and I said, absolutely not. Would a different team have elected Obama? Yeah, I think they would have because this is about the quality of the candidate. We were all bless to work for such a great candidate.

You talked about failing to fully vet Rev. Jeremiah Wright as your own personal failure. Was that the campaign's biggest oversight?
We vetted him some. We didn't do it as exhaustively as we should have. We didn't look at every sermon on tape. I personally should have looked at all the sermons on tape. That was a big oversight, there's no doubt about it. I think the other big mistake we made was [extending] the primary that might have allowed the primary to go on as long as it was. And right now that doesn't seem like a big deal because we won, but you have to remember that we gave John McCain a three-month head start, which is nothing to sneeze at. At the time that could have been a phenomenal mistake though McCain didn't use that time well and it was something we overcame. But, yeah, I would say that was our biggest oversight.

You expected McCain's team to be ready for you guys with guns a blazin'. But they didn't seem to unload when the general campaign began. Were you surprised?
We were very surprised. Here's what we thought would happen: We thought he would use those three months to really organize and get ahead of us in all the battleground states. That didn't happen. We were actually, by the end of June, far more organized on the ground. Second, we thought he would have a better economic message and third, we thought he would try and separate from Bush. None of that happened. I was pleased none of that happened and I thought for sure they would have guns a blazin' for us coming out of the primary. They had three months to get ready and we were extremely fortunate that some political malpractice was at play.

There's a great passage where you talked about whether or not to accept the endorsement of Sen. John Kerry in early January. You and others recommended that Obama not take the endorsement yet Kerry did endorse on Jan. 10. Were you still opposed to it then?
No, my point was that we wanted his endorsement, but with two days before the Iowa caucus, we were dependent on young voters and independents and new voters. It just didn't feel like the best way to close the campaign in getting endorsed by...I mean, he was the previous nominee, so that's kind of as establishment as you can get. Sometimes you make good decisions that pay off in the short term and the long term. I think obviously it worked out in the short term, but in the long term you had the New Hampshire primary (which Clinton won). There was John Kerry endorsing us two days after the primary, which was a very important moment. It sent a strong signal to Democrats across the country that the fight was going to go on. We got compensated twice for what was the right, but unconventional decision.

That moment, which you called a 'tell Kerry no endorsement moment,' where the brain trust decided to delay the endorsement became a rallying cry for you guys and seemed to be the moment you realized you were playing chess, not checkers. Is that accurate?
Well, yeah, I think that's a good example of that. I would refer to the campaign in that way [as a chess match] and to not just think about things in the conventional way. That's what we did well. We didn't always take things on their first track. We really tried to play things out and say, OK, what is most consistent with the strategy and message of the campaign? I may be wrong about this, but my sense is that there are not other campaigns that would have made that same decision so I'm proud of the one we made.

What other 'Tell Kerry no endorsement' moments did you have?
During the primary, we decided to limit the number of debates we were going to give, which led to a lot of grief from Democratic interest groups. We didn't attend an AARP debate in IOWA and we were told that that was going to cost us at the caucuses. I mention in the book that we made very tough scheduling decisions. We didn't attend every event that every Democratic candidate had attended over the years. We wanted to control our own scheduling and get some people to the events that we thought would us help. That means, we didn't always do the traditional events. That was really hard to do because we got a lot of pressure, obviously. We stuck to our game plan on February 5 where everybody wanted to focus on the results of some of the [major] primary's, like the California primary. We didn't do that. We thought Idaho was as important. So, we had a lot of moments like that. But I also think, broadly, we did not evaluate our campaign prospects every day based on the common national media coverage and punditry of the moment. Part of that was because we were such a grassroots campaign and had so much voter contact every day. But we had our own metrics and we would evaluate our campaign through the prism of our own metrics. That's what mattered to us every day. I think that's what was different about our campaign.

The national press corps (like you guys) all seemed to think you would win New Hampshire quite easily. But when Clinton won, the press penned obituaries to your campaign. What's your view on the state of national political journalism?
Well, first of all, it has a very important role in our society, so I hope it continues to flourish. I do think there is a rush to pronounce judgment and also kind of view the campaign through the prism of all campaigns. You might remember by the way, that we went to Berlin to do a major event in the summer after we were the nominee and part of the speech was "I am a citizen of the world," and a lot of people [in the media] criticized that. They said, 'You can't say that,' and 'You have to be more jingoistic.' Well that was just a misreading of where the electorate was. So, I think think they rush...it tends to be the same and too quick of judgments. Now, I will say that in the case of New Hampshire it was too premature to write our obituary, but I couldn't argue with people who said, ,'Boy, Clinton has no gained the upper hand in the race.' I wouldn't argue with that. But a lot of our political news has now turned into sports news; a lot of it looks like box scores - who's up, who's down, who got the hits. Now, that being said, a lot of these investigative pieces that are out there is really good. Some of the stuff out there does focus on the substantive prognostication could not play a more valuable role in our society.

A fascinating read: "The Audacity to Win."

Has horse race journalism hurt political discourse?
Well, I'll leave that to the people who study it. I'm not an academic in that regard. I would say that some of the debates in Washington...a lot of the coverage is about politics, well what does this mean for [the respective congressional and presidential elections in] '10 and '12? And I do think that does a disservice and moves the dialogue to a short term political flavor, which I think is damaging.

Obama seems to have had a more challenging time selling his message in the press these days as opposed to during the campaign. You may disagree with that notion, but, why is it harder for President Obama to sell the public on his plans than it is for candidate Obama?
First of all, we were doing a lot of communication on our own. We had a huge amount of radio, television and Internet advertising. We had a lot of people knocking on doors to get people to register and vote. And the coverage - people think we got glowing coverage, but the truth is, when you're doing well, you get good coverage. The moments we were doing well in the primary and the general we got good coverage. The moments we were struggling, like during the fall of '07 when Hillary won New Hampshire, you don't get good coverage. The questions are, What's wrong with the campaign and why are you struggling?

So, I think now, we're not in a campaign. This is not a campaign. They're trying to convince Congress on health care, but this is not really a comparative exercise. You're out there trying to get something done and the coverage is less about who's up in this poll in Ohio than it is on health care. There's a lot of talk around the House about what the Senate is going to do and I think [Obama] is fighting through that. That's what makes the president unique. He's going to fight hard and all he's worried about is the end result. And there are moments when the talk is about how you're not doing well, but you just kind of fight through that.

You had some harsh words for Clinton's campaign, calling it a juggernaut, machine, etc. Do you know if she has she read the book and, if so, have you received any reaction from her or her team, including [Communications Director Howard] Wolfson and others?
I don't know. I know Howard's got the book, but I haven't heard from him. I know Bob Barnett, my agent, is very close with the Clinton's, said the book is very fair. I talked with a couple of other people on her campaign who thought it was fair. I couldn't write an honest book about the campaign without being clear. I do wind up writing pretty flattering things about her because we were very impress by her, as frustrating as it was to watch her campaign take off. But it will be interesting to see what [Clinton adviser] Mark Penn and others have to say about it. [Note: In one section of the book, Plouffe mentioned that he was surprised Penn stayed on the Clinton campaign when others stepped down, saying he thought Penn was most to blame for her collapse and infighting, a claim later verified by press accounts.]

The book is wonderfully detailed with quotes from all the primaries, from Obama on down. Tell me about the process of culling those quotations and tapping your memory of events that happened, in some cases, years ago.
Well, it wasn't that long ago. The campaign was pretty long for all of us, so these moments are embedded very deeply on our psyche. I was writing about some of the highlights. I can't say that every word was accurate, but the dialogue I put in there was all based on very clear recollections. Obviously, I had a lot of emails, I had some notes. I had some memos and was able to get some help from some of the colleagues who read the manuscript, David Axelrod and others. I think I captured everything accurately, but that was one of the reasons I wanted to write the book right away. If I waited, it would not have been as fresh. My memory is probably something that makes up for my lack of talent in other regards. I had a pretty good recall on all of these.

I want to get away from the book for a minute. In February, you got a lot of heat for giving a paid speech to a pro-government NGO in Azerbaijan. You said you would donate the $50,000 you got from the speech. What did you learn from the controversy?
The whole speaking world is something I'm new to. That trip wasn't exactly the way it was described to me; I thought I was simply going to give a speech to an organization. I learned that I have to be careful, obviously. Given that there was a financial contribution, they had me come in and give a couple hour election discussion about organizing. We had a great discussion about organizing and about elections. We talked about ballots and about voter protection issues. I think anyone who saw my speech in Azerbaijan would be thrilled to hear what I said, some of which was reported on. It was very much about getting young people involved, about technology and about openness. I do think that the digital technology is going to be big tool in Democracy, particularly as cell phones become more and more diversified in terms of their usability. There obviously are a lot of countries where Internet penetration and computer penetration are not high. But if cell phones can replace a lot of what computers do in terms of functionality, talk about a great tool to get information out there.

You are a 40 something professional political operative who has likely achieved the highpoint of your career. What's next for David Plouffe and can you top the 2008 campaign?
Well, I'm not suggesting I'm not going to continue to contribute, but it's helpful to be realistic in saying it would be hard to top that. So, I'm not going to try. I'm going to obviously do what I can to help the president and try and do a good job with my family. I'm sure over time there will be ways to contribute and to professionally build. I have a full appreciation for what a special moment that was and I tried to relay to our staff on the campaign, which was mostly young people, how fortunate they were to be involved in this, but how spoiled they might be. This was a remarkable candidate, a well-funded campaign, a campaign with all the spirit of millions of volunteers - those don't come around very often. By the way, I hope I'm wrong, I hope they come around every four years. It was very, very special thing to be involved with and I was fortunate to be involved in it. But I'm only 42. Knock on wood, I have a lot of time left, but I'm certainly not going to be out there looking for the next Obama campaign because I know how special it was and what a rarity it was.

Will you be managing the 2012 reelection?
Oh, I don't know. That is so long from now and none of us are really focused on it. The Republican contest is beginning...there will be a time for that, but it's not now.

David, thanks very much.
Thank you. Bye.

David Plouffe will be signing copies of his new book tonight in Pasadena.
AP Photo/Danny Moloshok

New Orleans Hornets defeat LA Clippers 112-84. After getting word that center Chris Kaman was named Western Conference player of the week, the Clippers responded by not showing up against the reeling Hornets. In fact Eric Gordon didn’t show up with a sore groin. Kaman scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in the game. Despite having a sore ankle, Hornets guard Chris Paul stung the Clips with a 24 point, 10 assist output. The Clippers turned the ball over 17 times while the Hornets grabbed 12 steals and sunk 10 three-pointers.

Chicago Blackhawks defeat LA Kings 4-1. The Kings are reeling now losing two straight games in regulation after going 6-0-2. Penalty killing literally killed the Kings as they held strong for two periods holding a 1-1 tie. Third period power play goals by Troy Brouwer and Jonathan Toews blew the game open for the Blackhawks giving them an overall 73-72-21 lead all-time against the Kings. They Kings managed only 18 shots on goal all game including a paltry two shots in the third period. Anze Kopitar managed the only goal for the Kings in the second period giving him a league-leading 28 points making him the player to watch in the league. The loss leaves the four points behind the San Jose Sharks for the division and conference lead.

Notable Notes

Congratulations to Kings legend “Lucky” Luc Robitaille on being inducted to Hockey’s Hall of Fame. No one could have imagined back in 1984 when he was drafted in the ninth round by the Kings that he would have a hall of fame career much less learn English. But in his 19 season NHL career he would go on to score 668 goals and 1,394 points, both records for left wingers. He also set a Kings franchise record scoring 577 goals surpassing Marcel Dionne.

After stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, a return to the Kings, Robitaille went to the Detroit Red Wings to win the elusive Stanley Cup in the 2001-2002 season. He returned for his final stint with the Kings in 2003 and played his final game at the HP Pavilion against the San Jose Sharks on April 17, 2006.

The Kings retired Robitaille’s number 20 on January 20, 2007 and was named the President of Business Operations for the Kings four months later.

The video of the induction speech is after the jump and the text of the speech is here.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Larry Johnson Monday morning after suspending him for two week for calling reporters “faggots”. Johnson has had troubles ever since turning pro when then head coach Dick Vermeil told Johnson “to take the diapers off” after bitching about playing behind Pro Bowler Priest Holmes. Last season then head coach Herm Edwards suspended him three games for violating team rules and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him an additional game for violating the league conduct policy.

Good for the Chiefs. As they are trying to rebuild the franchise, they need to purge themselves of mindless ignorant fools who beating on women and calling people faggots is permissible. If Johnson does get another job in the league, I’ll be sitting there hoping every tackle knocks him out of the league.

AP Photo/Jae C. Hong

Although the massively large Station Fire was fully contained last month, it still burns in the Angeles National Forest. That may be confusing, so revisit the common definitions of containment and control, as given by officials in most fire updates to the public on InciWeb:

When referring to a fire, the difference between a fire being contained or controlled can be unclear. When a fire is contained a fuel break has been completed around the fire manually by hand line, and/or mechanically by dozer line. These breaks may also include the use of natural barriers such as rocky outcroppings. When a fire is controlled, it has been extinguished completely, including hot spots. When a fire has been controlled, the fireline is secure enough so that flare-ups within the fire perimeter will not break through the line. Therefore, just because a line is contained does not mean that the fire is controlled.

The LA Times today reports that the Station Fire remains burning in the Mount Wilson area. “The fire’s not out by any means," explained information officer Stanton Florea. When will it be out? Officials hope when the cold winter rains begin to fall

Galaxy forward Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick at the 73rd minute to give the blue-and-gold the edge over in-stadium rivals Chivas USA last night and advance to the Western Conference Finals.

Partidazo -- the Spanish slang word for superb match -- is a fitting one word description of what happened last night at the Home Depot Center. After tying 2 - 2 in the first leg of the home-and-home series last Sunday, the Galaxy and Chivas USA resumed their playoff battle yesterday in Carson, in front of a sell out crowd of 27,000 fans.

Donovan would put 2009 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Zach Thornton to work early, forcing him to make a save on his 2nd minute header. A handful of minutes later, Donovan was back with a great run down the left, but this time around he hit the side netting. His early chances at goal were a great reflection of the match as a whole: fast and furious, with the Galaxy controlling most of the first half.

Chivas USA opened their shot count at the 16th minute via a header by Maicon Santos. His dangerous header was the result of a botched clearance attempt by Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez and bounced just wide right of the Galaxy goal. Teammates Jesus Padilla and Justin Braun took additional cracks at the Galaxy goal through the first 35 minutes, but neither was able to beat blue-and-gold 'keeper Donovan Ricketts, who again put in another strong performance, including a great finger tip save on Braun's shot.

The blue-and-gold then took control for the majority of the final minutes of the first half following Braun's strike. David Beckham would get a clear shot at goal from the top of the penalty area after a series of volleys and bounces near the Chivas USA goal, but his blast sailed way high. Chris Klein would follow it up with the best opportunity of the half for the Galaxy and only seconds later. Klein had found himself at the receiving end of a great cross from Donovan out on the right wing and he blasted one home. Klein's shot was perfect, but so was Thornton's reaction, whose great one-handed save kept the score level. Sacha Kljestan would counter for the red-and-whites only minutes later with a great long distance shot of his own, but he too was unable to break the deadlock before the end of the half.

As the match wore on, the pace of the game became even more torrid and a bit rough at times. Galaxy midfielder Dema Kovalenko set the tone early on with his aggressive play at the start of the match and was fortunate to not have earned a yellow on a couple of occasions. Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura matched Kovalenko's intensity and the defensive four for both sides put in solid performance as both clubs refused to give an inch.

Red-and-whites captain Carey Talley rallied his troops as they looked to get a goal early in the second half. Chivas USA Head Coach Preki Radosavljevic tried to build on the shift in momentum bringing in Maykel Galindo. Chivas USA pressured the Galaxy defense, but were unable to capitalize despite their opportunities, including a cross from Santos to Galindo that rolled across the mouth of an open Galaxy goal.

On the other side, Beckham and Donovan increasingly exploited the space created by the shift in strategy by the red-and-whites, leading to some great scoring opportunities for the Galaxy, but Thornton and company held the fort down. At the 70th minute, Beckham would put in a wonderful, curving 40 yard pass into a streaking Donovan who then found a wide open Mike Magee just outside the 6 yard box. Chivas USA defender Yamith Cuesta tried to shut him down quickly, but was rather reckless in doing so and ended up committing a hard foul on Magee. Referee Ricardo Salazar did not hesitate and immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Donovan converted it at the 73rd to give the Galaxy lead, but the game was far from over. Galindo nearly tied it only seconds later as the red-and-whites ratcheted up the pressure and refused to give in. Beckham nearly made them pay for it minutes later, once again putting in another great long distance pass to Donovan, but the Chivas USA defense recovered in time to deny him.

In the end, the Galaxy managed to hold on to the 1 - 0 lead despite a barrage of corner kicks and pressure on their defense in the final minutes. The victory -- the Galaxy's first playoff win since 2005 -- advances the blue-and-gold into the Western Conference Finals against the Houston Dynamo on Friday night at the Home Depot Center.

Yet another week has come and gone. Luckily, this week offers an amazing array of comedy the likes of which we haven't seen in quite a while. Patton Oswalt is at Largo, the Comedy Store hosts Bootyoke, the best karaoke thigh-showing dance party jam in the game. There's also sketch comedy galore and enough other stand ups to keep you laughing. Seriously, go check out some comedy. You could use it. You don't look so good. But if you want to hype a show or find out some super secret show stuffs, email Farley here. That's a good look for anyone.

MONDAY 11/9

The Smokes, 7p UCB. Check back in with these longtime UCB improvisers and they do shit you literally won’t see anywhere else.

Victor’s Secret, 8p iO West. Two person improv based on the secrets of a special guest. Sounds fab.

Ink's Kat Von D broke the world record for "most tattoos done in 24 hours." That record was soon shattered within six months in Texas and then again in Arizona. Now, the next attempt to break it will be back here locally this Friday night at midnight.

Jeremy Swan, the tattoo artist and shop owner over at Broken Art Tattoo on Hyperion in Silver Lake, needs to place over 802 tattoos on customers to claim the title. Swan, however, wants to do around 900 tattoos (by comparison, Kat Von D did 417 to break the record).

How does it work? "Abiding to the rules of Guinness the tattoo must be 1.25 x 3 inches and have a minimum of two colors," Swan wrote on his blog. "I will offer 4 different designs. A bat. A heart with wings. The letters ‘LA’. And the number ‘13′ (for Friday the 13th) you can get one or all of these designs." It's not free, though. The first design will cost $20 with $10 for each extra. About 500 people have already signed up and if you want to, e-mail info@brokenarttattoo.com.

Maybe Don is finally free of Betty but the plight of the kids had our female viewing party members crying with most feeling that Don was much better off without "that crazy Betty". What will keep us pining for the next season is the momentum that was built up with what was ostensibly the launch of a start-up '60s-style. Summer of 2010 can't come too soon.
---
While we think Taylor Swift did an admirable job on "SNL" we didn't think she "knocked it out of the park" among other things we saw on Twitter. Unfortunately for "SNL", their spot-on take of FOXNews came a couple days after "The Daily Show" one-upped them with Jon Stewart channelling Glenn Beck to a tee. Also, there's no way the very pretty Kristen Wiig could ever be mistaken for battle-axe Greta van Susteren. Up next for "SNL" is guest host January Jones, aka "Betty Draper" from AMC's "Mad Men" which is a puzzling decision as we're not sure about her chops for sketch comedy. We hope she surprises us this coming Saturday (with Black Eyed Peas as musical guest) as we will be watching. We found some pics of the poor girl getting harassed by paparazzi on her way to the airport for her flight to NYC to rehearse for "SNL". Holy crap she looks irritated but that's the price of fame we suppose.
---
New York City declared today to be "Sesame Street Day" on the eve of the 40th season premiere. Not to be outdone, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation announced that it has begun accepting applications for the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship. Ernst & Young LLP will underwrite three $10,000 scholarships for Undergraduate and Graduate Students - you can find the application at www.EmmysFoundation.org and the deadline is January 15th.
---
Showtime fans aching for the return of their Winter series should know that the Monday lineup returns on Jan. 25 with the second season of "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" at 10pm, followed by "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union" at 10:30pm. Mondays will have a new 11pm series with the launch of "La La Land" in the 11pm slot. "Nurse Jackie" returns on March 22nd.
---
Did anyone watch "The Wanda Sykes Show"? Tell us about it.

The TV Junkie Plan: "House", "Trauma", "Cake Boss", "Lopez Tonight", Letterman (Bill Murray guests!).

Local sex and relationships blogger AV Flox has launched a new naughty site, appropriately called Sex and the 405. It's tagline: "What your newspaper would look like if it had a sex section." It's a mix of local and national sex-related headlines, from a recommendation for discreet couples at the BondSt Lounge in Beverly Hills to environmentally-friendly, PETA approved whips and the 2010 sex blogger calendar.

But what caught our nerdy eyes was a brief article about Australian redback spiders. According to researchers, "a male redback has to vibrate the female’s web for 100 minutes before attempting to mate or the female will cannibalize the over-eager loser." The sudden feeling of male gratefulness is overwhelming right now.

They were found nearby, "sleeping in a garage stacked with the stolen property, and with some of the ill-gotten goods in their pockets," according to ABC7. If passed, the law would limit where dispensaries may be located, hours of operation, how it can be distributed and records of every member, according to the Long Beach Press Telegram.

Still, it's not as strict as it could be since cities do reserve the right to ban collectives outright or limit the number within city limits. About 50 to 60 are currently within Long Beach. Los Angeles has around 1,000.

In three games played he averaged 24.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2 blocks. The 7-foot 265 pound center has been a disappointment due to injuries after signing a contract following the Clippers playoff run in 2005-2006. However when healthy he did show glimpses of what he could contribute. Coming into this season Kaman has been healthy and fit. After starting off the season 0-4, Kaman has been a contributing factor for the Clippers being 3-4. They face the freefalling New Orleans Hornets at Staples Center tonight.

Organizers for the Sunset Strip Music Festival have already determined the dates for its third year. It will run from Thursday, August 12th through the 14th, with a Sunset Strip street closure on the last day.

“The first-ever street festival brought a renewed energy to The Sunset Strip, and we received a tremendous amount of positive response from the press, attendees, artists and city officials following the event,” said festival Executive Director Todd Steadman in a statement. “We are excited to solidify a date for 2010, and we are thrilled to build on the success of the event for next year.”

Photo rights advocate blogger Shawn, otherwise known as discarted, recently was taking photos inside the Hollywood/Western Metro Station when two L.A. County Sheriff's approached him.

Shawn, who always wears a video camera, caught his whole 25-minute ordeal and uploaded it to YouTube yesterday (an abbreviated version is posted above), sparking off some good debate on photographer's rights vs. public safety.

According to an interview with LAist last year, the subway system's top sheriff, Commander Dan Finkelstein, said that there is no law against taking photos in the subway system. However, he did add that "since 9/11, many of the large transit agencies have grappled with that. What we have our deputies do is if someone is acting suspicious, regardless of photography, the deputy will make contact."

In this case, Officer Gylfie along with Officer Bayes made contact. Did they take it too far? We think Gylfie took it way too far when he threatened to put Shawn on the terrorist watch list. What do you think?

Tonight London-based electronic singer-songwriter Imogen Heap will be performing to a sold-out crowd at Henry Fonda Music Box. And, lastly, LA-based lo-fi pop act Best Coast will be gracing the Smell in Downtown.
Earlier this morning, we showed you the video of The L.A. Wall being torn down. Now, here are photos of the art before it was destroyed in celebration of the Berlin Wall's falling 20 years ago.

The Wall Project, which brought 10-pieces of the real Berlin Wall to Wilshire Boulevard with new artwork by Berlin-based and local artists (it's still on display through Saturday, see the first two photos above) and the temporary L.A. Wall last night (the remaining photos), was mainly the product of the Culver City-based Wende Museum Cold War Archive.

L.A. Wall aritsts included Thierry Noir, Shepard Fairey, iLia Anossov, Asylm, Jaime “Vyal” Reyes, Axis, Jennifer Puno, Brigid LaBonge, Timo Fahler, Meleko Mokgosi and Judi Jensen.

For past week or so, the people behind the Buttermilk Truck have been sneaking around town, previewing its food to whoever came upon it. Although the truck officially debuts Wednesday evening with its late-night menu (think fried chicken and waffles and the Buttermilk Brick--hash browns, eggs over easy, buttermilk biscuit and a housemade chorizo gravy), the truck arrived for a not-so-secret sneak peek of its morning menu at yesterday's Silver Lake Art Craw event at Barnsdall Art Park.

The line was long and slow, but worth it. How could you go wrong with Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Buttermilk Pancake Bites ($5)? Or the most raved about Hawaiian Bread Cinnamon French Toast Sticks ($2.50 or $4).

Items that were so popular, the truck ran out of, included the Housemade Cake Donuts ($2.50, $4) and the Buttermilk Biscuit Breakfast Sandwiches ($3.50), which a choice of applewood smoked bacon, chicken apple sausage or tocino with cheese and fried egg on a buttermilk biscuit. Add fifty-cents for rosemary garlic hash browns. And lastly, a steady favorite was the Hawaiin Bread Breakfast Sliders ($5), a mix of Portuguese sausage with sauteed onions and shoyu scrambled eggs.

You can follow the Buttermilk Truck at @buttermilktruck on Twitter.

Last month we had the chance to talk to Bill, who has been signing his 700 page long NBA book in cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego and of course, Boston.

"LA signings are weird. They had the lowest turnout of any city," said Simmons over the phone when we spoke with him just days before hitting the road for his book tour. "I think it’s because there’s so many celebrities out here that I’m like Z-list. I’m on whatever list the guys from "The Ruins" are on. If I go to Providence or somewhere like that, it seems like a much bigger deal."

Bill is kind of a big deal though. He's the executive producer of ESPN's highly praised documentary series 30 For 30, his podcast ,"The B.S. Report," is among the most popular on iTunes and he's got his own page on ESPN.com, "The Sports Guy's World." That's more than what any of those "Real World/Road Rules" cast members can say; well, maybe he's not as big of deal as Tonya. She's quite the accomplished actress.

If you have any of Tonya's work on DVD, and are willing to part with it, be sure to bring it to the signing because Simmons loves gifts. "Last time I was going to do a column about all of the stuff people gave me. I had a whole box of stuff I got from the signings. Then we moved and I have no idea where that box is, it could be in my attic. I don’t know." He adds, "This time around I’m going to do a much better job of making sure I’ll keep track of all the quirky, stupid and funny gifts so I can write something about it after."

If you miss Bill tonight he'll also be signing books in Anaheim at the ESPN Zone on Friday at 4 p.m.

Check out the LAist and Bostonist interviews with "The Sports Guy" from last month.

The potential fare increase can be most likely attributed to a number of factors, including a decrease in ridership as well as their financial struggles that can be in part associated with the demand for rigorous safety reforms, most notably as a result of last year's deadly Chatsworth collision.

Metrolink is facing a massive budget shortfall, and just this summer raised fares by 3 percent. Reaction to the discussions about another increase has been mixed, with some officials hoping service reductions and alterations could better solve the agency's cash woes, while others see this as the only viable solution to an ongoing problem. If the rate hike is to be implemented, "a one-way ticket from Riverside to downtown Los Angeles could top $11."

Metblogs. What is says: "Hey, look up here. That's right, here. The least you could do is smile. Why not? Life is too short not to enjoy it," the machine says as you fill up.

A commenter on Metblogs wished that "life had more cheerful easter eggs like this, hidden all around." We couldn't agree more.

You can find the gas station at Woodman and Riverside.

The garden at Larchmont Charter School in West Hollywood, has already been teaching the current K-2 students about food and science, as described in the Larchmont Chronicle:
Children keep a garden journal and grow their own vegetables from seeds they plant. There are raised beds for every classroom, and a variety of gardens including native, five senses and butterfly.
Larchmont's garden is one of just 4 in the nation with an affiliation to the Waters program. Much like other educational garden programs at schools all over Los Angeles and the country, the Edible Schoolyard "integrates the concepts of ecology into the curriculum while infusing the curriculum with real-life applications through gardening, cooking, science experiences, and a healthy, seasonal, locally-grown lunch," notes the school's website. As part of this program "students awaken their senses, learn about nutrition, help to build a community, and begin to take personal responsibility for the earth."

Carpool lanes added to the Southbound 405 Freeway as part of a $167 million project were opened up this weekend, in the hopes this will relieve some congestion on the road. "Caltrans workers Saturday took out barricades on the southbound 405 freeway's carpool lanes from the Interstate 10 Freeway interchange south to the 90 Freeway," explains CBS2, adding that the last step was to replace the surfacing material in the center divider.

Caltrans has been working on this particular project for 5 years, and the work on the Northbound side is expected to be completed and the lanes open later this month. In addition to the carpool lanes, the project has provided more exit lanes, and widened the 5 regular lanes 10-12 feet.

To the south, another 405 congestion-relief project in the OC was named as one of the 21 "Critical Transportation Projects" in the region.

This morning, as the countdown clock to the 2010 LA Marathon declares there's 131 days until the big event, the official "Stadium to the Sea" course map was released. Beginning at Dodger Stadium, this brand new route takes participants and their supporters through some of Los Angeles' iconic and familiar-the-world-over city and county sights and neighborhoods, including El Pueblo, City Hall, and Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown; Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood & Vine, and the Sunset Strip in Hollywood; Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills; and from Century City through the Westside to the finish at the shore of the Pacific at Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean.

Serious discussion of altering the route of the run began to take shape this summer, as planners reacted to a vociferous crowd of people who yearned to see the race, from the perspective of not only the participants but to global spectators watching on television, showcase the landscape and landmarks we're known for. One runner published an Op-Ed in the Times noting that the race was "visually deadening." Her suggested route: "To take in some of the city's more memorable sights, runners could start at Dodger Stadium, go through Chinatown, then up Sunset Boulevard to Hollywood, on to Beverly Hills and Westwood, and finishing at the beach in Santa Monica." Well whadda ya know?

The 2010 LA Marathon takes place on Sunday March 21, 2010.
