Today, that three-tiered plan went into effect--an aerial ladder was extended to to rescue the hiker, some 50 feet above the cave, successfully. That was Plan A.

Depending on the situation, Plan B is used, which is a rope rescue from above. Plan C, only used in dire situations, is a hoist operation via helicopter. The ladder is problematic, however: the down draft from the helicopter's blades can be too intense for loose soil in this area, often injuring the stranded and rescuers.

Officials were alerted to the hiker's situation shortly after 4 p.m. He was rescued lest than 45-minutes later and was evaluated by medics. Recent rescues in the same spot include on January 17th of this year, April 23rd of 2008 and in October 5th of 2007.

The location has not just been used for old Batman episodes. Dozens of films and TV shows have used the canyon and cave as a filming location including Army of Darkness, Star Trek, Little House on the Prairie and, of course, Attack of the Crab Monsters.

A San Francisco-based federal judge approved such a discovery for the case, which begins on January 11th, but Prop 8 proponents appealed, citing a violation of their 1st Amendment rights, according to the LA Times. Now three judges are expected to rule on the issue within a couple of weeks.

During the Prop 8 campaign, Prop 8 proponents often claimed that teachers "will be required" to teach young children about gay marriage. In a ruling, a judge ruled that the statement was "false and misleading."

Lawyers for the couples said internal documentation was essential to their case. They "produced one message obtained from a Proposition 8 proponent warning that the consequences of failing to pass the gay-marriage ban would include California 'falling into the hands of Satan' and the next step in the gay-rights movement, including 'sex with children,'" noted the Times.

Draft Bicycle Plan in the Silver Lake area. Solid Green = Existing Bicycle Lane; Dashed Yellow = Potential Bicycle Lane; Dashed Blue = Bicycle Friendly Street; Dashed Purple = Proposed Bicycle Route; Solid & Dashed Maroon = Existing & Proposed Bicycle Paths | Download the full map here (.pdf)

The ever-so engaged Silver Lake Neighborhood Council tomorrow will meet and consider a motion telling the city their recommendations on the controversial draft bicycle plan.

Currently, the plan says there is potential for a bicycle lane for the length of Glendale Boulevard, which runs through Silver Lake, from Atwater Village to its terminus at Beverly and 1st. Today, bicycle lanes can be found on Griffith Park Boulevard, between Los Feliz Boulevard and nearly making it to Sunset Boulevard, where heavily traveled bike lanes can be found. Silver Lake Boulevard also has lanes between Glendale and Sunset Boulevards.

The draft plan says there is also potential for lanes along Silver Lake Boulevard until it ends at Beverly Boulevard, and then continuing towards the Vermont/Beverly Red Line station. Some neighborhood councilmembers agree, asking the full board recommend that the city follow through with the lane, changing it from a "potential" lane to a "proposed" one.

Other recommendations include designating West Silver Lake Drive as a bicycle friendly street: "The loop around the Silver Lake Reservoir is a popular destination
for recreational cyclists, runners and walkers," the motion reads.

Other bicycle friendly designations the motion seeks are:

From Temple St. north on Coronado to continue beyond Sunset Blvd and Scott Street east to Waterloo, north on Waterloo to Mayberry, east on Mayberry to Mohawk, north on Mohawk to Berkeley, east on Berkeley to Glendale Blvd.

Effie between Griffith Park and Talmadge street.

The motion ends with this sentiment: "While outside of the SLNC boundaries, a bicycle infrastructure without continuous connectivity to Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles is useless. Assign proposed designation to bike lanes east and west on Sunset Blvd from Downtown to Hollywood."

The meeting takes place on December 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Micheltorena School Auditorium (1511 Micheltorena Street).

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)
In the December issue of Men's Journal Alec Baldwin states that he's lost interest in acting and that he will retire at the "30 Rock" wrap party and/or in 2012. This would be an unfortunate loss for both the small and big screen. Baldwin states that his lack of success in film is a big reason behind his disillusionment. But wait, word has it that Baldwin is strongly favored to be an Oscar nominee for his role in the yet-to-be-released It's Complicated. It will be interesting to see what happens if Baldwin were to win an Oscar at the awards show he will be co-hosting and it will be interesting to see if that changes his mind about his profession. Whether he wins or not, we'd really like to see him stay, and to see a lot more of him.

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel. Photo: Ron Wurzer - AP

It was an ugly game. To call it a defensive battle would be claiming that the offenses were actually threatening to break the contest open. In truth, both offenses were anemic. For the defenses, it must have felt like swatting flies. It would seem USC won because their defense had a slightly bigger flyswatter.

A couple days later, the way history will remember the 79th meeting between USC and UCLA is clarifying. This game won't be remembered for the final score. It will be remembered for it's final minute.

It's a society of sound bites and highlights and what the first fifty-nine minutes couldn't deliver, the sixtieth certainly did.

So much hype surrounded the hiring of Rick Neuheisel, a former Bruin quarterback. He seemed to have the perfect disposition to invigorate the UCLA football program. He was his own version of the boyish, wild-eyed winner Pete Carroll had become across town. Neuheisel seemed like he had a shot to steal a few recruits from the Trojan pro football factory. You got a sense that Rick might make a dent in USC's armor.

Then UCLA jumped the gun. They printed an ad in the L.A. Times that became the first stone cast in Neuheisel v. Carroll. The ad showed a confident Neuheisel in full UCLA gear pointing toward some unknown void. The copy read, "The Football Monopoly in Los Angeles is Officially Over!"

This ad ran, of course, before the season began. What followed was a 4-8 season for the Sons of Westwood for an 8th place finish in the Pac Ten. How did Neuheisel do against the Trojans? A 28-7 home loss, good for UCLA's ninth loss in their previous ten tries against their crosstown rival.

Apparently, the football monopoly in Los Angeles wasn't quite over yet.

Trojan fans took in the Bruin advertisement and then found great delight when someone Photoshop'd the word "there" at the end of the ad. Now there was a punchline to UCLA's poorly-timed declaration: An ad reading "The Football Monopoly in Los Angeles is Officially Over There" with Neuheisel seemingly pointing east down the 10 towards the Coliseum.

Last Saturday's ho-hum contest carried none of the joy of a crosstown rivalry for fifty-nine minutes. There was no venom. This was the perfect example of why USC/UCLA is often cast aside as a rivalry in favor of meatier disputes like those between Michigan/Ohio State, Texas/Oklahoma and pretty much any two school you pick in the SEC.

This rivalry had become toothless.

I wanted stories like that of Woody Hayes and his decision to make his Buckeyes push their team bus a few miles back into Ohio after running out of gas because he refused to refuel across Michigan state lines. That's the kind of gusto we need. It's nonsensical! It's tasteless! It's a rivalry!

In that sixtieth minute, we may have finally seen the true beginning of Neuheisel v. Carroll. This wasn't a silly advertisement in a newspaper. This was two big personalities on display.

With under a minute left in the game and holding an insurmountable two touchdown lead, USC lined up in victory formation and took a knee. It was an offer of a peaceful surrender. Neuheisel refused it.

The UCLA coach called a time out with 52 seconds left on the game clock. The crowd booed and hissed. For some, this was a classless waste of time. For others, this was a sign that UCLA wanted to fight to the death against it's rival (even if they were barely still breathing). Either way, it got Pete Carroll's attention.

On the next play, USC quarterback Matt Barkley ran a play action pass, finding a wide-open Damien Williams in the end zone for a USC touchdown. Carroll was exuberant on the sidelines. The Trojans hooted and hollered. Neuheisel looked stunned. It seemed as though he never anticipated his request for another play would result in that play.

Rick had asked for more. He certainly got it.

USC began to taunt their powder blue rivals causing the Bruins to march to midfield. Coaches ushered players back and UCLA ended the game with a fruitless drive yielding no points. There was bad blood. Plenty of it.

After the game, both Neuheisel and Carroll downplayed the events on field, but the truth was, it was all classless. It was ugly. It was provocation and payback. It was one-upsmanship.

It was a rivalry, baby.

In front of the city and all the local recruits deciding which school they liked better, they saw a quick exchange between two aggressive coaches. They saw Neuheisel slap Carroll in the face with a timeout. They saw Carroll whack Neuheisel with a sledgehammer with a long touchdown pass.

What the rest of us saw was fifty-nine minutes of uninspired football, one minute of flat-out open warfare and the rekindled hopes that the Trojans and Bruins will get back to making this rivalry special again.

The personalities are there. The first shots have been exchanged. Let's let the games begin.

Okay, maybe "terminate" is a little harsh -- the last movie wasn't that bad -- but wouldn't an infusion of fresh concepts and mythologies juice up that half-tired feeling one gets from most of Hollywood's blockbusters these days? And couldn't they have stuck with the original ending for Salvation? Not only was it a great mind-fuck, but it would have struck the final nail in this franchise's coffin. Hence...REPLACED! The first Night at the Museum sucked balls of course, so I expected the sequel to suck a relatively equal nut apportionment.

Well folks, I'm almost happy to say...I was totally right! It was much worse actually. You know a movie is not working for you when you actively begin rooting for the lead characters to die. I fell in half-love with Charlyne Yi when I first saw Paper Heart (my own divine femme has a healthy dose of suspicion about true love.) The movie, however, is a delightful, often hysterical affirmation that true love does exist and all you need to find it is a little belief in those things that can't be proven. You know, faith. Sort of like wishing on a morning star.

This comes despite new safety measures prompted by last year's deadly crash. Last Tuesday a train with passengers inside headed east from downtown when it may have ran a red light. Luckily it stopped a few hundred feet from an oncoming train. No one was injured, but Metrolink board members are angry over the pattern of basic safety rules not being observed.

Photo from the artist's Myspace page.
Todd Rundgren, the boundary-defying musician, vocalist, composer, producer and original Zen Master of computer technology applied to music, embarks on a very special mini-tour this week, performing his 1973 release A Wizard, A True Star in its entirety in four California cities. This Friday at the Orpheum Theater, Todd and his band will reprise an album so full of music, the pressing required narrowing the grooves so that it could all fit. Covering just about every rock/pop genre even a journeyman fan could imagine, even inventing a few more in the process, it has over time been proclaimed Rundgren's White Album, OK Computer and Pet Sounds.

Acknowledged to be a musician’s musician - on 1972’s Something / Anything, he played all instruments - for this unveiling of A Wizard, A True Star Rundgren has enlisted some phenomenal support players. His touring band for this jaunt consists of drummer Prairie Prince (The Tubes, skinbasher on the Rundgren-produced Skylarking by XTC); bassist Kasim Sulton from Rundgren’s 70’s-era band Utopia; Cars keysman Greg Hawkes; guitarist Jesse Gress (Tony Levin, Robbie Dupree, Adrian Belew); saxophonist Bobby Strickland (The Band, Grateful Dead, Dick Dale), and pianist Ralph Schuckett (another Utopia vet whose session ledger includes James Taylor, Lou Reed, and George Benson though unfotunately not all on the same session). Expect a higher than usual turnout of studio technicians and Musicians Institute grads.

Backed by this fiery group of players, Rundgren will open with a set of “other material”, including songs he has never performed live, before launching into what is sure to be one of the highlights of LA music for 2009. Promising something more than a note for note duplication, he playfully remarks “This is not that”. Expect staging, costume changes and songs fully brought to life with Rundgren making use of his own theatrical sensibilities and Prairie Prince’s talent with set design. (You have to wonder what the visual motif on ‘Rock and Roll Pussy’ - Runt’s purported jab at John Lennon from Lennon’s year of exile in LA - is going to be).

Rundgren spoke to LAist on the phone from his home in Hawaii shortly before heading to LA to begin tour rehearsals.

The album that you’re performing at the Orpheum, A Wizard A True Star, came out in 1973, the same year as Grand Funk Railroad’s We’re An American Band and the New York Dolls’ debut album. Can you tell us what it was like having so many projects happening in such a short amount of time?

Well in those days the entire industry was a little different. It didn’t take months and months to make a record. I guess people didn’t have the idea of “perfection” that they do nowadays, where the idea is that enough perspiration can makes up for inspiration, uh, I don’t know. But it was not incredibly unusual for a producer, which I principally was at that point in time, for a producer to do three, four, as many as a half a dozen projects a year. Because they all took, more or less, an average of a month to record. Also it was just a time in my life where I had no other preoccupations but music. I also built a studio in New York, and that facilitated a lot as well, in that I could record some of my projects in my own studio or even produce from my studio. And that was a situation where we weren’t really under any kind of time limitations, in terms of what time we could come in to record, and how long we spent working. So that made our use of the studio time, I think, more efficient. And, I had no family to demand that I spend time with them. So I could spend all this time, you know, traveling or doing these productions in studios around the world, to record these various records.

Of all the albums that you could have chosen to give this kind of “live in entirety” treatment, why did you pick this one?

I didn’t choose it, and that’s how. I was on tour in England about a year ago, and our promoter approached me with the idea of doing the album once, in London. And he was inspired by the fact that a generation of younger musicians had begun to discover A Wizard A True Star, the record. And exactly how, I don’t know, how they discover that album from 1973 is mysterious to me. But in any case, a bunch of younger musicians were mentioning the record, and it was being sampled on records as well. So he thought it’d be a great way to introduce me to a younger audience in England by essentially doing a special event that would possibly feature some of these younger musicians. When word of that possibility got back to the United States, a group of fans decided that England was too far for them to go, and they wanted to see that album performed. So essentially, they found a venue in Akron and started promoting it themselves. By the time word of this got through the internet to all the fans, we wound up doing seven shows in five cities during the first ten days or so of September. So it went from being a single special event to being a series of dates and because the production is more elaborate than what I usually do, we can only do it in limited runs anyway. So we’re also doing these four dates in California, and we’ll finally make it to London in the beginning of next year, we’ll play a date in London and then a date in Amsterdam.

With all the different styles and textures on the tracks on A Wizard A True Star, how did you approach the recording? Was there a standard method of doing tracks live in the studio and overdubbing from there, or did that approach change with every song?

Well, in those days I had been working in a couple of contexts. One was the Something/ Anything context, which was me playing everything. And then there was the fourth side of Something/ Anything, and this is the record I did right before A Wizard A True Star. And the fourth side of that is all live sessions with a band. So I was not locked into doing things one way or another way. But this was the first project we did at the studio we built in New York called Secret Sound. We were still wiring up the console and stuff like that when guys were turning up to the first session. We’re frantically trying to get everything working while they were rehearsing the songs. So in some cases it would be like that, it would be live and very much resemble a live session, and in some cases it would be just me, by myself, and the biggest difference there was that I was essentially the engineer. We had no engineer to really operate the tape machine, I would have to turn it on and then run out and play whatever I was gonna play. Or, we did do a lot of recording in the control room.

So, much of our approach was out of the fact that we had our own environment to work in, and were freed of the usual limitations. I was… I could do anything I wanted that other studios might frown upon, like running it too hot or wiring things together in these weird configurations that they were not comfortable or familiar with. So it was really a different record from the stand point of how we worked. It was more like a college project or something. It wasn’t a typical kind of studio thing. Although I imagine that the Beatles had a similar kind of freedom in the studio, where you could take over a studio for a month and not have to share it with anyone else. So that was a principal element, the complete freedom to ignore the usual constraints of being in the studio.

There’s a very unique bass sound on some of those tracks, that’s kind of a quavering, wobbly bass sound. How did you achieve that effect?

We had a limited number of effects available to us in those days because it was all analog, you know, pre-digital. A lot of the vocal effects, nowadays they would use what would be referred to as a digital delay. Well there was no such thing in those days. If you wanted that kind of delay, you had to do it by an analog method. So we had a thing called a Cooper Time Cube which essentially was a couple of long pieces of hose inside a box, with a funnel speaker on one end and a microphone on the other end. So you would get this synthetic doubling effect, And one of the pedals we used to depend on a lot was called the Univibe, It’s essentially a classic effect that a lot of people used, Jimi Hendrix used it a lot on his guitar. Not so much on the bass. But we were working from a different kind of ethic, that whole idea that there were no rules that we were compelled to follow. So we would apply things that probably people didn’t think of. But using the Univibe on the bass, was, it wasn’t that unusual for the way we were working. Let’s just plug everything into everything else and see what it sounds like.

You were one of the first prominent musicians to offer a direct to consumer model for purchasing music over the internet. What did you find rewarding about that experience and, do you plan to continue working that way?

Well it was not exactly….it wasn’t based so much on sales. It was called Future Net. And the idea was that artists would get underwriting to create new music, and that the underwriters would get the chance to kind of look over the artist’s shoulder and peek at what they were doing. And so it was not a standard consumer model, it was supposed to be for people who were particularly devoted to certain artists.

And it was great for a while but the problem was, it was always a technological burden, and I needed to have the participation and the help of other entities. And at some point we sold it to someone who then proceeded to dismantle it. Put no money into it, starved it to death and essentially brought the whole enterprise to its knees. And it hasn’t recovered since. I would like to go back to the concept again, which is different from the standard, record sales. More sort of long term underwriting, and a different sort of relationship between the artist and the people who listen to the music. But at this particular point in time I’m too involved in musical things, I suppose, to get back into the whole technology trip. But that doesn’t mean I won’t get to a place where I will revisit the concept and try and re-prog.

Regarding the 2004 album Liars, did you begin with the concept before writing the songs or did you notice that you had a lot of songs with a common theme?

The concept evolved… I had done a little bit of recording but at the time, I was very sort of unfocused about it. I wasn’t really thinking I was ready. I was just… writing songs and recording them. And eventually I got to the point that I thought, I’ve got enough basic groundwork done, I should start to think about finishing a record. And I realized I wanted to do something that was conceptual, which I hadn’t done in a while. And I realized that at least some of this stuff I had been writing about was on the topic of, not just truth, but also reality and surreality and all these sort of glamours and things like that that I discovered, after ruminating, seem to be almost endemic in human character. And so after that, it almost started to write itself from a lyrical standpoint. Eighty minutes worth of music, all of it about that central topic. It turned to out to be a real goldmine, I guess, of ideas for things to write about. Once you realize and acknowledge the fact that this weird relationship that human beings have with the truth creates so much conflict, how much conflict and turmoil… that’s where most music comes from. It comes from turmoil. Most art is the product of some kind of turmoil deep inside that artist’s soul.

Working as a producer, have you ever worked on a project that ended up having an effect on your own music?

Almost all of my productions have had some eventual effect on my music. In many instances, I’m only interested in doing artists that present a kind of challenge. Production means a lot of things, and one of the things I don’t really feel should be in the category of production is simple babysitting. So if the producer is not making some of kind of contribution, and conversely becoming more and more educated about the act that he’s working with, then there’s not enough music in it for me. So I tend to choose artists that I’m not necessarily 100% comfortable with, and even then I’m trying to challenge us to come up with something beyond the mundane. And so in that sense, I’m always ideally learning something and getting something from the people that I’m working with, even if I don’t directly incorporate that into anything that I do. I mean, I did produce a country album once. I haven’t really done any country music. But in that sense, the answer is yes, I do get affected by the people I work with.

Are there any production jobs that you’ve passed over and later wished that you’d accepted?

Well, there are jobs that just, for whatever reason, just don’t happen. Because many artists are on a schedule, you know, they’ve gotta get a record done so they can go on the road and tour it, often can’t wait for you to finish another project that you’re working on and you lose the opportunity. I was working on a Tubes album when I was approached to do a Talking Heads record. And I was a big fan of the band and I was always disappointed I never got to do that. But ce’st la vie, you know? That’s the breaks. And there are other things that you get to do that make up for it. You know, I did an XTC record that was a Herculean task from a psychic standpoint. It was a very satisfying record to do, and a finished product that only I would have done. And those are the kinds of records that you’re waiting for, the ones that are the perfect match for you.

It was interesting reading XTC’s interviews in response to the production of that record, and, well, you’ve read them too...

It comes with the territory, I guess. You hope that your time with an artist will be pleasant and fruitful. And if it can’t be both of those, it can at least be fruitful. We helped their career, and beyond that, the turmoil just comes with the territory. Put it this way: it would have been horrible if we’d gone through all that AND the record sucked.

After a Pasadena code enforcement officer visited a store with a large city-funded mural on one of its walls, apparent miscommunication led to the new mural to be pained over by the owners. Artist Christian Alderete said it felt like a kick in the face, but suspects the action wasn't with malcontent and would paint it again. Code enforcement has asked the business for various fixes, including repainting a wall.

Stretching across the border of Los Angeles and Kern counties and tucked between the Tehapachi and San Emigdio Mountains is the Tejon Pass. We often call it The Grapevine, the portion of the 5 freeway that divides Southern and Central California. The recent winter storm kept us nice and warm here in Los Angeles, but our local mountains saw a change in weather. Hello, December!

Yesterday: It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Winter...

Los Angeles County officials announced today the last set of free H1N1 vaccination clinics for residents in the CDC-designated priority groups. “Residents who are in the priority groups for H1N1 vaccine and do not have a regular source of health care are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to receive free vaccine," said Jonathan E. Fielding Director of Public Health and Health Officer.

So far, close to 1.2 million doses of the vaccine have been delivered to private health care doctors and community health clinics. Some 175,500 doses were administered at the County's free clinics between October 23-November 22.

The last set of free clinics for designated priority groups will run between December 4th and 8th (see PDF schedule and locations here). Priority groups include pregnant women, people living with or caring for infants under six months of age, emergency medical services personnel and health care workers and people aged 25 through 64 years with chronic medical conditions
like heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, or weakened immune
systems.

The cities of Pasadena and Long Beach, which run public health programs separate from the county, will also host free clinics. However, as of publish, their websites did not provide updated information.

Yes. "Homeowners' main defense is the Solar Rights Act, adopted by California in 1978 to protect consumers' right to install solar energy technology. The law makes it difficult for homeowners groups to reject solar energy equipment unless it creates a safety hazard or a modification can be made without great cost."

Photo by SevenPhoto via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr

We've heard about the LAPD doing this before--one LAist writer witnessed something like this last year in Hollywood--and here it is again from last Friday night, via Damien Newton at Streetsblog:

... things got ugly when Los Angeles Critical Mass breezed onto Los Angeles Street and ran into an LAPD Squad Car facing against traffic with its lights flashing. According to eye witnesses, the two officers tackled cyclists off their bikes at the front of the mass and were still trying to drag massers off their bikes at the tail of the mass. Witnesses claim that there was no announcement that riders should dismount nor any attempt to signal out riders that were lawbreakers, just an attempt to randomly grab cyclists and detain them.

Apparently, one part of the incident was caught on video and will be uploaded to the internet soon, according to one Streetsblog commenter. If you remember, one officer got into trouble after tackling a cyclist in New York City (it was caught on video).

And for some good news, new LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has ordered a bicycle working group to examine bicycle policies.

Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson was arrested in Los Angeles yesterday for grand theft, after model Jasmine Lennard, a friend of hers, returned to her Hollywood apartment from a trip to find various items stolen, a wet towel on the floor and, well, a used dildo in her bed, reports the New York Post.

It was a confusing moment until Lennard, a former contestant on Britain's Make Me a Supermodel, received a text from Johnson's on-and-off-again girlfriend Courtenay Semel, daughter of Yahoo! CEO Terry Semel.

"There's a problem, Jaz, Casey Johnson just got into bed with me and she is wearing your underwear," the text read. "You need to call police. There are documents here, your shoes and your clothing -- you need to call the police." And so the police were called and Johnson was booked yesterday afternoon at the Van Nuys Division station.

Lennerd told the Post she considered Johnson a little sister, who she helped through a drugs and alcohol problem. But for now, the friendship appears to be off: "She breaks into my Hollywood apartment, masturbates in my bed, has a shower in my bathroom, takes every thing in my apartment," she said. "This time she really messed with the wrong lady. I am going to teach her a lesson."

Officers used a PIT maneuver--that's when you spin a fleeing car out of control--to capture the two after a short pursuit. What officers say they didn't know, according to the LAPD, is that there were two children, aged 4 and 6, in the back seat.

The morning of family activities began around 2:45 a.m. in Sherman Oaks when the Rite-Aid on Riverside Drive was robbed. Fifteen minutes later, a CVS Pharmacy in Encino was hit followed by an IHOP a few minutes later, where two CHP officers were about to grab a meal before being alerted to the robbery in progress.

For those of you who always carry plastic and never cash, this should be convenient, at least when you visit Nancy Silverton, Mario Batalli & Joe Bastlanich's Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza restaurants.

"Some guests don't carry cash, so it made sense to establish this hassle-free way to pay the valet service charge," explained Regent's Vice President, Joe Burwell, in a statement. "Our valet stations at Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza will have wireless credit card terminals. In less than one minute, the transaction will be completed."

The new service will launch at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The ever-so progressive and eco-friendly city of Santa Monica is at it again, this time with sewer clogging fats, oil and grease (FOG), which now can be collected for a new future as biofuel. In parking structures 2 through 6, restaurants can jettison their FOG for free, the city announced today.

Similarly, residents can recycle their FOG at the city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2500 Michigan Ave. just East of the 10 Freeway at Cloverfield. Hours: Wed - Fri 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Sat. 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Asian Soul Kitchen is the creation of food and entertainment industry pros Akiko Konami and Richard Wright, and will offer up traditional Japanese dishes as well as inventive fusion items and soulful fare ("a little bit o' Asian and a little bit o' Soul").

On the menu are things like Yakisoba (a veggie-friendly noodle dish), Nikujaga (hearty beef stew with noodles), Salmon Korkke (a salmon-potato croquette), Lollipop Chicken, Asian Sliders, and Lettuce Wraps, along with side dishes like Southern Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey, Spicy Creamy Mac & Cheese, and Braised String Beans, along with a few rice dishes.

Some mechanical issues put the brakes on their soft-opening weekend plans, but they expect to roll out this week. Check their website for the confirmed schedule, and follow them on Twitter.

After trimming it's production costs the producers were given the green light to make 3 more episodes. We like the show (it's on the TV Junkie Plan tonight at 9pm) because: it's the only medical drama series with some action/cajones on TV right now; it's shot in our onetime home of SF and that location has become a character in the show; and it stars the talented and lovely Anastasia Griffith whom we interviewed at the Emmys and also a couple years ago about her work on FX's "Damages".
---
It turns out that Leno isn't losing audience to other 10pm shows so much as he is losing out to people watching stuff on their Tivos and the stuff they're watching doesn't seem to be from NBC. Our interpretation is that this is so-so news for NBC's competitors and really bad news for Leno.
---
Are you a transplant to LA that occasionally feels pangs for a real Christmas experience? There's one week left to enter a contest over at The Weather Channel to provide you with a guaranteed White Christmas. Submit a video about why you deserve one and they will cover your house with real snow and broadcast from there on Christmas Day.
---
The TV Junkie Plan: "House", "Trauma", The Daily Show, Charlie Rose (Wes Anderson guests!!), 2nd half of Conan (Shatner + AnnaLynne McCord), Ferguson

8:00pm House FOX - Wilson An old friend and former patient of Wilson's experiences paralysis in his right arm; Cuddy continues her search for real estate.

8:00pm Heroes NBC - Unexpected visitors greet H.R.G.; Samuel's plan starts to come to fruition

8:00pm Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story IFC - (2005) A director tries to shoot an adaptation of a novel that is considered to be impossible to film.

9:00pm Gossip Girl The CW - Blair suspects her mother of keeping a big secret from her; after having a fight with her mom, Vanessa shows up on Dan's doorstep

9:00pm Trauma NBC - As a bad batch of heroin hits San Francisco, Glenn questions Nancy's judgment during an encounter with a "frequent flyer"

How Big is L.A.'s Theatre Scene?

"Father Comes Home From The Wars (Part 1)" at the 365 Days/365 Plays Festival in 2006

Yes, New York City has amazing theatre. And lots of it, too. But what about the West Coast? We heard this one years ago: Seattle has more theatre than Los Angeles. And it's that little rumored morsel of "fact" that reared its ugly head again, which peeved LA Times' theatre critic Charles McNulty a bit.

In a New York Times article, a former Pasadena Playhouse employee opines that Seattle "probably" has as much theatre as Los Angeles, despite being one-sixth the size.

That is very far from the truth, finds McNulty. "There are roughly 79 theaters in Los Angeles that use one form of equity contract or another, a number that doesn’t include any big sit-down productions or the 40 or so theaters that sometimes use an Equity member or a guest artist or special appearance contract," he explains. "Nor does it include the huge number of 99-seat productions each year (verging around 1,000, was the estimate)."

In Seattle, there are 15 equity theatres with 16 others that sometimes use special appearance or guest artist contracts.

That's not to say one scene is better than the other, but one could fill up their weekly school with theatre show after theatre show and not have time for much else in life here in L.A. And, as McNulty adds--and we agree--"L.A. theater has its share of problems. I’ve written in the past that I think it’s too actor centric — that directors should be granted more of a leading role in the shaping of the culture." Hear, hear!

Recently on LAist about Theatre
- Go See This: Basil Twist & Joey Arias Team up for a Trippy & Naughty Puppet Cabaret

Also file this under "Only in L.A," where medical marijuana is in abundance--around 1,000 dispensaries by unofficial count. This canister, still with some weed left in it, was spotted by a kid--what's "kush?" she asked her mother--at Beverly and La Brea over the weekend. The area is rife with dispensaries.

The man on the phone said the customer's bill was not paid--the customer said it was. Upon calling the LADWP themselves, a representative said there was no record of an outbound phone call and that, in general, accounts past due notifications are made using an automated system. In the past, we've seen fake LADWP workers steal bikes and attempt burglaries.

That was until October 16th when a fingerprint from a recovered cell phone taken in a Santa Monica burglary led back to parolee Daniel Perez. Later that day, another burglary in West Los Angeles was connected to Perez.

In all, he's believed to be involved with at least 21 burglaries, according to the LA Times.

After a burglary conviction, Perez was paroled in 2004 from state prison and has twice violated parole. He is described as twenty-eight year old male Hispanic, with black hair and brown eyes. He stands at five feet nine inches tall and weighs one hundred and eighty-five pounds.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call (213) 444-1523 or after-hours and on weekends at 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (527-3247)

(AP Photo/TMZ)

Citing injuries from his solo car crash on Friday, Tiger Woods has bowed out of the 2009 Chevron World Challenge, an event that benefits his namesake charity and scheduled to begin tomorrow in Thousand Oaks. Friday's incident was the lynchpin for a series of news about Woods' personal life, something he rather keep private.

To that, ESPN's Jemele Hill says "Good luck with that."

Speculations about domestic violence, drug prescription use, an affair and a lawsuit-- the alleged mistress met with Gloria Allred this weekend--are running rampant in the news.

Thanksgiving is done, it's back to work, and tomorrow we turn our calendars to December. Of course, we've been grousing for a few weeks already about shops who are hawking Christmas goods and festive holiday decorations have popped up all over town. Coffeehouses and retailers are brewing up seasonal flavors already, and some radio stations put Christmas and Hanukkah tunes in their rotation pretty much as soon as the carved pumpkins got tossed in the trash.

It's a little harder for Los Angeles to get that wintry look, considering we've been basking in balmy temps in the upper 70s. Sometimes we leave it to Hollywood magic to create our winter wonderland, sometimes we just shrug and break out the twinkle lights and garlands like they would in any other city. Here are a few photographs from our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr that prove autumn is waning and winter is truly on its way in.

Los Angeles is always giving us little hidden out-of-the-way spots in the middle of the city. One of those is Fryman Canyon, tucked between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard, this hike snakes you open space you may never have known existed.

Although most locals erroneously call a nearby park Fryman Canyon--it's actually Wilacre Park--the real Fryman Canyon Park is much different experience, made up of narrow trails, short steep climbs, shady paths and the "Rainforest." The two parks actually connect via the Betty B. Dearing Trail, with trailheads found off Laurel Canyon at Wilacre and off Mulholland at Fryman.

Fryman Canyon is most directly accessed via Mulholland Drive, west of Laurel Canyon (download a PDF of the park map here). No obvious sign marks the park, but a sign for the Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook is your indicator. A small free parking lot (street parking available across Mulholland) puts you at overlook and park which offers a few workout stations (monkey bars, stretching, sit up bench), historical displays and two trailheads.

Once you begin hiking, stay right and you'll be on the short one-way less-than-a-mile U-Vanu trail that dead ends at private property near Laurel Canyon Boulevard. It's flat, easy and offers views of the San Fernando Valley with a mix of shady and sunny spots.

For the more hardcore, the shady Betty B. Dearing Trail forks off to the left downhill. You'll cross streams, see at least two cars that years ago, plunged off Mulholland, and eventually make it to the Rainforest--a shaded and significantly cooler gully where a rope used to hang from a tree, allowing hikers to swing out and over it. Hike past the Rainforest and you'll find yourself at the end of Fryman Canyon: Iredell Lane. About 100 feet to your left, you'll find Wilacre Park. In total, you're looking at about 1.5 miles one-way.
