After trimming it's production costs the producers were given the green light to make 3 more episodes. We like the show (it's on the TV Junkie Plan tonight at 9pm) because: it's the only medical drama series with some action/cajones on TV right now; it's shot in our onetime home of SF and that location has become a character in the show; and it stars the talented and lovely Anastasia Griffith whom we interviewed at the Emmys and also a couple years ago about her work on FX's "Damages".
---
It turns out that Leno isn't losing audience to other 10pm shows so much as he is losing out to people watching stuff on their Tivos and the stuff they're watching doesn't seem to be from NBC. Our interpretation is that this is so-so news for NBC's competitors and really bad news for Leno.
---
Are you a transplant to LA that occasionally feels pangs for a real Christmas experience? There's one week left to enter a contest over at The Weather Channel to provide you with a guaranteed White Christmas. Submit a video about why you deserve one and they will cover your house with real snow and broadcast from there on Christmas Day.
---
The TV Junkie Plan: "House", "Trauma", The Daily Show, Charlie Rose (Wes Anderson guests!!), 2nd half of Conan (Shatner + AnnaLynne McCord), Ferguson

8:00pm House FOX - Wilson An old friend and former patient of Wilson's experiences paralysis in his right arm; Cuddy continues her search for real estate.

8:00pm Heroes NBC - Unexpected visitors greet H.R.G.; Samuel's plan starts to come to fruition

8:00pm Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story IFC - (2005) A director tries to shoot an adaptation of a novel that is considered to be impossible to film.

9:00pm Gossip Girl The CW - Blair suspects her mother of keeping a big secret from her; after having a fight with her mom, Vanessa shows up on Dan's doorstep

9:00pm Trauma NBC - As a bad batch of heroin hits San Francisco, Glenn questions Nancy's judgment during an encounter with a "frequent flyer"

How Big is L.A.'s Theatre Scene?

"Father Comes Home From The Wars (Part 1)" at the 365 Days/365 Plays Festival in 2006

Yes, New York City has amazing theatre. And lots of it, too. But what about the West Coast? We heard this one years ago: Seattle has more theatre than Los Angeles. And it's that little rumored morsel of "fact" that reared its ugly head again, which peeved LA Times' theatre critic Charles McNulty a bit.

In a New York Times article, a former Pasadena Playhouse employee opines that Seattle "probably" has as much theatre as Los Angeles, despite being one-sixth the size.

That is very far from the truth, finds McNulty. "There are roughly 79 theaters in Los Angeles that use one form of equity contract or another, a number that doesn’t include any big sit-down productions or the 40 or so theaters that sometimes use an Equity member or a guest artist or special appearance contract," he explains. "Nor does it include the huge number of 99-seat productions each year (verging around 1,000, was the estimate)."

In Seattle, there are 15 equity theatres with 16 others that sometimes use special appearance or guest artist contracts.

That's not to say one scene is better than the other, but one could fill up their weekly school with theatre show after theatre show and not have time for much else in life here in L.A. And, as McNulty adds--and we agree--"L.A. theater has its share of problems. I’ve written in the past that I think it’s too actor centric — that directors should be granted more of a leading role in the shaping of the culture." Hear, hear!

In their live shows, Trainwreck takes their fans for a memorable trip down the wrong side of the tracks. From their stage costumes complete with mullets and mustaches to their stage antics complete with onstage bickering and wacky guest stars, everyone in the room is always along for a great ride. Original songs like "J.B. Shredman and "Bothered & Hot" to covers of "Footloose" turn Trainwreck gigs into hilarious white-trash hootenannies.

You may recognize Klip Calhoun as none other than Kyle Gass of Tenacious D (LAist's 2007 interview with Kyle Gass). Trainwreck's also features lead singer Darryl Donald (AKA JR Reed, who recently made Thanksgiving raunchy with The Sexy Pilgrim), Boy Johnny (John Spiker), John B. Shredman (John Konesky), and Dallas St. Bernard (Nate Rothacker). Then there are the guest stars, who also have created their ownTrainwreck characters. Some nights Tim Robbins, Jack Black, John C. Reilly and other funny and talented friends join the mayhem.

With the years of recording, fun gigs, and after parties in their Wreckabago, it is finally time for Trainwreck to release their first studio album. People of LA, Trainwreck wants you to know that "The Wreckoning" is coming at you. LAist visited Trainwreck at their rehearsal studio to hear about their upcoming album, album release show at the Roxy on December 2, and what Klip, Darryl, Boy Johnny and Shredman love about living in LA.

LAist: Here we are with Trainwreck. Their first studio album "The Wreckoning" is dropping on?
Darryl Donald: December 1st.

LAist: Excellent. And we have Boy Johnny, Klip Calhoun, Darryl Donald, and Shredman here. So tell us about recording your new album.

Kilp Calhoun: Well, it took seven years.

Darryl Donald: That's right. Almost as long as Chinese democracy.

Klip Calhoun: But it's call a Trainwreck democracy. We didn't want to be associated with Axel. So uh... but it took so long... why did it take so long Darryl?

Darryl Diamond: Because we fired about eight producers.

Klip Calhoun: We did. We went through a lot of producers. A lot of producers have trouble working with us because of our attention to detail I guess. We demand perfection in the studio. A lot of times we finish a track, we say "no" we have to do it over like eight to ten times. Now it's ready and I think it is perfection.

LAist: We hear you are having a big launch party for the record. Where is that going to be?

Darryl Donald: The Roxy! On the fabulous Sunset Strip on December 2nd that's Wednesday. 8pm.

Klip Calhoun: We are bringing rock back to the Roxy. Mmm hmm.

Darryl Donald: Yep.

LAist: What songs will you be playing that night?

Darryl Donald: We will be playing almost the whole album in its entirety, right?

Klip Calhoun: I think so. The album should have been called greatest hits. Quite frankly because it contains every one of our hits.

LAist: How long have you been in LA?

Klip Calhoun: Well...

Darryl Donald: About eight years now.

Klip Calhoun: I think yeah about eight years. I was heavily inebriated when I dropped into Los Angeles, so I am not quite sure the time. Darryl picked me up I was homeless. I was playing guitar in the street. He brought me in and actually saved my life. Thank you Darryl.

Darryl Donald: You're welcome. My pleasure.

Klip Calhoun: (looking at Boy Johnny and Shredman) These two guys we found at The Guitar Institute of technology. We convinced them to drop out because we said, "Hey. It's not about learning. It's about yearning. Yearning for the top."

LAist: What is you favorite thing about Los Angeles?

Darryl Donald: Besides Pink's hot dogs?

Klip Calhoun: I think the traffic. It give me a lot of time to catch up with my books on tape.

Darryl Donald: What are you listening to these days?

Klip Calhoun: Well, right now I am on "2001 A Space Odyssey" the Arthur C. Clark classic.

Darryl Donald: Oh jeez.

Klip Calhoun: But if I am on the 405. I go right to "Moby Dick".

Darryl Donald: Yeah, that's a good one.

Klip Calhoun: I forget who it was written by. Kevin Spacey I think wrote that one.

LAist: Can each of you tell what is you favorite Trainwreck song to play live on stage. Shredman?

Shredman: I think I like my song. John Bartholomew Shredman.

LAist: Darryl?

Darryl Donald: I am going to go with El Mustachio for obvious reasons.

LAist: Can you share a little bar of it?

Darryl Donald: I would if we had a guitar.

Klip Calhoun: I'll sing it. "Let me tell you about a friend I know goes by the name of El Mustachio." (Turns to Darryl.) Does it go something like that?

Darryl: Not even close.

Shredman: I don't know what band that is man.

Klip Calhoun: What band is that?

Darryl: (Singing.) "Let me tell a all you peeps about a friend I know. Ba be be um...be ooh ee oh ee um. He may not be too fast, you know his moves are slow."

LAist: Awesome. Klip which one is your favorite to do live?

Klip Calhoun: I think that is the first time Darryl has ever sang acapela.

Darryl Donald: I think so. I didn't know what it was.

Klip Calhoun: He can't spell it, but he can do it.

Darryl Donald: I thought it was a pasta.

LAist: Awesome. Klip, which is your favorite song to play live?

Klip Calhoun: My favorite song to play live would have to be...I'd say, "Tim Blankenship".

Darryl Diamond: Uh hun. Because it is his song. He sings lead.

Klip Calhoun: We are a very self absorbed, selfish band.

Boy Johnny: I was going to say "Love".

Darryl Donald: The song you sing lead on.

Klip Calhoun: That's Boy Johnny's song.

LAIst: Trainwreck do you have any messages for the people of Los Angeles?

Darryl Donald: Yeah, it's about time to get 'wreckified'. Okay 'cause wreck and roll is coming out and it's going to not only take over Los Angeles like a 2012 movie, but it's going to roll that tidal wave all over the nation as we spread it in our wreckabago. We are going to travel. We are going to go on tour. We are going to take it everywhere. Rancho Cucamonga, we're coming to you. Compton, we're coming to you. Okay. Palmdale, set up here we come.

LAist: Awesome. Thank you so much.

Phony romance New Moon reigned over the box-office for a second consecutive weekend ($42.5M | $230.6M), though feel-gooder The Blind Side almost nipped it in the end ($40.1M | $100.2). Disaster-fu disaster 2012 held onto third place ($18M | $138.7M), just nosing out awful newcomer Old Dogs ($16.8M) and the sturdy A Christmas Carol ($16M | $105.3M). Ninja Assassin debuted to a solid $13.1M ($21M), topping mediocre kiddy flick Planet 51 ($10.2M | $28.4M) and the superb Precious ($7M | $32.4M).

Fantastic Mr. Fox ($7M | $10.1M) and The Men Who Stare at Goats ($1.5M | $30.5M) rounded out the top 10. In limited release, the nightmarish The Road just missed cracking the top 10 ($13,721 per theater). Traditionally animated Disney flick The Princess and the Frog did gangbuster business ($356,000) (admittedly because of super-high, event ticket prices). Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles ($16,200) and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee ($8000) did solid box-office as well.

Forty horrifying years into his career, Alice Cooper is still sacrificing himself to audiences on a nightly basis. Not content to give his life for show business just once, in his current Theater Of Death tour, which stopped at the Nokia Theater, he endures a beheading, a hanging, and a blood-spewing run-through with a dozen swords. If it gets a raised fist and a “woo!”, he will spare himself from nothing.

That kind of old-fashioned determination has earned him a place in the hearts of many Americans as a personal bogeyman, an envoy into the realm of dark fantasy. Even though he was no more violent or antisocial than a good monster movie, kids internalize music in a way that doesn’t often happen with films. (The same could be said for NWA, many years later.) But all the ooga-booga posturing would be meaningless if he didn’t have tunes. The music on the Alice Cooper albums made from 1971-74 predict heavy metal as it would appear ten years in the future - heavy guitars, crunchy, memorable hooks and big choruses that give the finger to authority. To a kid growing up on comics, junk food and rock and roll during the seventies, there was nothing cooler.

Today, most of these gags are played for comedy rather than horror. But the songs retain their dark magic in the hands of a very capable young band, and if the setlist is a bit predictable, the performances are strong all around. Comparing the show at the Nokia to some footage from the Lace And Whiskey tour in 1978, he actually looks healthier and stronger now than he did then (decades of clean living can do that for you, I guess.) If he’s lost the power to surprise us much in these times, he’s instead become a model of reliable quality and consummate professionalism.

It was a little odd that “School’s Out” was chosen to open AND close the show. Maybe they broke it out a second time so Slash could come out and play on it during the encore. Great a track as it is, there were several expected favorites that got skipped (“Dead Babies” and “Elected” were particularly missed), presumably for lack of time. Only about three songs from his recent efforts made it onto the list, none of which was the brilliant “Lost In America.” But despite the limited set list, Cooper still delivered a gaily grisly reminder of the way rock and roll show business used to be, killer hooks matched with a point of view and something flashy to look at.

And on the topic of flash… consider Ace Frehley, former lead guitarist for the band Kiss. Kiss came out just a few years after Cooper, taking his general approach toward the concert-as-spectacle and boiling it down even further, taking away the storytelling aspect but leaving the explosions and the costumes, building up a live show with all the subtlety of a fireworks display. But again, they had to have songs in order for the whole thing to work. Frehley didn’t actually write most of those songs, but the ones he did - “Cold Gin”, “Shock Me” and “Rocket Ride” for starters - were all highlights of the albums they appeared on. Of the four solo albums made by Kiss members in 1978, his was unquestionably the best one, in fact the only one I can imagine listening to for pleasure at this point.

And his unique, fumbling guitar style was essential to the band’s sound; when Kiss replaced him with heavy metal shredder guys in the eighties, the old songs never sounded quite right again. The playing was too precise, too correct. Ace wasn’t formulaic. He didn’t seem like he was smart enough to apply formulas. He just went for it, in the only way he knew how, and it came out sounding different from anybody else. It may not be the most technically great guitar playing ever laid down, but it’s the way you have to play to make it sound like Kiss. In their current formation, seen at the Staples Center last week, Kiss employs a dead ringer that mimics those solos, the laconic vocal stylings, and even the clumsy way he flails around the stage, to the smallest detail. Even when he’s not physically there, they have to acknowledge him as terribly important.

Now touring as a solo act behind his new album Anomaly, he was able to provide a lot of the most thrilling moments from a Kiss show, despite the lack of explosions on stage. There was makeup though; in a hilarious touch. everyone on stage was wearing the infamous Space Ace design, except for Frehley himself. I have to wonder if there’s a kiss-off to Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley in that gesture. “OK, now that just anyone can wear that stuff…”

Stripped of all the outsized visuals that usually accompany the songs, the show demonstrated what a canny pop songwriter Frehley always was. The tracks were fun, crafted with garage-rock simplicity, performed with swaggering confidence, and overlaid with taut, melodic solos. Tracks from the new album show that his instincts are still alive and well, and while ripping through the oldies, he still sounds like his old self. His band both looks and sounds a little like Redd Kross, great players with an acrid mix of sweetness and raunch.

Both Kiss and Alice Cooper have been overdue for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for over a decade, though the former was finally tossed a nomination this year. It remains to be seen whether, if finally inducted, Stanley and Simmons will bring their chicken-suit wearing doppelgangers to the proceedings and leave Ace out in the cold. But considering the Hall is voted on by most of the same self-proclaimed “authorities” on rock and roll that brought you Rolling Stone Magazine, they should both know that they’re in good company with their long-held rejection. These were not critics’ bands; they were peoples’ bands, ones that got famous in spite of rock critics, not because of them. Their very existence as successful touring acts in 2009 probably makes those people that wish to consider themselves the arbiters of Acceptable Rock kind of nervous. It’s a sign that they can’t be invalidated, that their place in the music’s history cannot be unwritten, no matter how many institutions are created to exclude them. The Hall of Fame is, after all, just another form of authority. Give it the finger.

There are entire populations in this world that you simply cannot imagine. Not because their culture is so different or their location so astounding; rather, just because they are alive. On CNN or MSNBC or the Drudge Report or the Huffington Post, numbers get thrown around about ‘displaced people’ or ‘war-torn populations’. Numbers that (objectively) are big, but also too unwieldy; they cease to have any real context at a certain point because it’s just really, really hard to imagine suffering on such a massive scale. But the numbers are real, and there are people - unimaginable survivors - behind those numbers that simply cannot be ignored or bound by legalese and theoretical direction. There is an absolute need for someone, anyone, to step in and get their hands dirty. Enter MSF.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (known colloquially as Doctors Without Borders, or MSF) has been working since 1971 in some of the most war-torn, impoverished, and generally inhospitable places across the world. Annually they help ten million people, many of whom would have no medical recourse otherwise. These are the diseased, the embattled, the sick and the frightened, and MSF is there to help them all. And now, after nearly 40 years of secular humanitarian work as a Non-Governmental Organization, they’ve let cameras in to see just how tough the job really is. The result is the stunning documentary Living In Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders.

Clocking in at about an hour and a half, Living in Emergency follows the routines of four MSF workers who simply never clock out. Taking place in both Liberia and the Congo, the film doesn’t just sit back and let the action come to the audience. Rather, it is up close, personal, and altogether moving right from the outset. With a minimal (but necessary) focus on each profiled worker and some vital statistics to give a frame of reference to the scenes that follow, Living in Emergency quickly takes on an emotional / dangerous / enraging quality that rivals only The Cove in its scope and complexity, and completely blows it out of the water with its topic and tone.

The four featured members of the film all come from different backgrounds and have varying degrees of connection with MSF, which further complicates the work being done on screen. Tom Krueger, the rural surgeon from America, is faced with the challenges of low-grade surgery in a high-tension environment, including tough decisions (including amputation in one scene) that must be made instantaneously. Meanwhile, Davinder Gill is a young doctor working in the bush practically by himself on his first six month mission with MSF. Here, the lack of supplies and communication matter just as much as the overwhelming needs of the people, and it becomes immediately apparent why so many first-time doctors never return for a second MSF mission. Chris Brasher, meanwhile, is the hardened veteran who has grown weary of what he’s seen and experienced and is out for his final mission, while Chiara Lepora must deal with higher-level MSF issues like closing medical facilities in favor of expanded treatment elsewhere. In terms of scale, this is perhaps more devastating than any individual death in the film, as local medical staff and people in need are all left with a sense of abandonment. At one point, Lepora describes the tough decisions she faces: “when you see a car crash in front of you, you have a responsibility to do something” but the Congo, Darfur, Sri Lanka, Pakistan are all “big car crashes” and MSF is barely even able to apply the brakes. MSF is not here to develop infrastructure within a rebuilding government, it exists only when and where it is needed most urgently. Hence, Living in Emergency.

By allowing filmmakers in for the first time, MSF has given director Mark Hopkins the opportunity to create both a calling card for the work that Doctors Without Borders does, and a cautionary tale about what it means to really help in a world that is teeming with outstretched hands. Beautifully shot and masterfully cut, the only real downside with Living in Emergency is the sound mixing (which lends itself to needing a lot of subtitles). But losing some sound quality while embedded with some of the hardest-working, most selfless doctors in the world in unfathomable areas of need is the smallest price to pay imaginable. You could watch this movie on mute and still be moved by the poverty, perseverance, and pride that exist in the poorest people in the world, and the strength of those who just want to help.

Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders will be debuting in theaters early next year. However, a special screening and live theater event will be taking place on December 14th at theaters and screening rooms throughout Los Angeles. Check here for more information.

DVD Review: Kobe Doin' Work

Spike Lee was given unlimited access to Kobe Bryant for Kobe Doin' Work, which is available now on DVD

There was a great deal of buzz when word first broke that acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee would be making a documentary about Lakers' guard Kobe Bryant. On paper, a prominent director known for his love of the game of basketball giving audiences a rare look inside the life of one of the greatest players on the planet sounded like a slam dunk. Unfortunately, ESPN Films' Kobe Doin' Work was not that at all.

It is, however, very much worth watching and exactly what the title suggests -- a chance to observe Kobe Bryant at work on a typical day at the office. The day Spike chose to film is April 13, 2008. On the schedule for that day, a pivotal late regular season game with the rival Spurs.

Kobe Doin' Work, which first aired on ESPN on May 16th commercial-free, offers a unique perspective of Bryant, head coach Phil Jackson and the Lakers on the court and in the locker room thanks to Spike's team of 30 cameras following number 24. While we're given an opportunity to experience a matchup of two of the NBA's elite teams from angles you won't get during a typical game broadcast, our access to the 2008 MVP, unfortunately, begins and ends at the Staples Center garage.

Because our look inside Kobe's life is limited to the four walls of the Lakers' home court, the film offers very little insight into who the shooting guard is off the court. The moments where we do get a glimpse of Bryant away from the hardwood -- like seeing him watch an interview with candidate Hillary Clinton on a TV in the trainer's room pre-game or post-game hugs with the wife and kids may be few and far between but are among the film's highlights.

These moments are rare because the director was not shooting for a portrait of Bryant away from basketball.

Lee told ESPN.com that he got the idea for Kobe Doin' Work after watching Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait, a documentary about French soccer player Zinedine Zidane. In Zidane, filmmakers Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno present a Real Madrid vs. Villarreal CF game on April 23, 2005 purely from the perspective of Zidane shot with 17 cameras.

Armed with 13 more cameras, a mic'd up Kobe and much less ground to cover than Gordon and Parreno, the filmmaker captures the star doing what he does best from multiple vantage points including from the view from Spike's courtside seat. To compliment the rare footage, Kobe provides a voiceover track which he recorded just hours after dropping 61 points on Spike's beloved New York Knicks on February 2, 2009.

Kobe's commentary shifts between very detailed, almost too detailed and quite boring, X's and O's of the game to entertaining anecdotes about members of the Spurs and his own teammates. Thanks to the voiceover, we learn why Kobe wipes his hands on his jersey countless times per game, the simplicity of the "Triangle Offense" and the multiple languages the protagonist speaks on the floor.

The very best moment of Kobe Doin' Work comes when the game reaches half time. The cameras keep rolling inside the locker room as Phil, Kobe and team sit back and watch clips from the broadcast of the game while coach and player, mostly player, dissect the game. In the voiceover Kobe tells us that their love for the attention to details of the game is the reason he and Phil get along so well. If you too love the details of the game of basketball, you'll love watching these two doin' work.

In Zidane, the star player's game ends early after being sent off as the result of a brawl. In Kobe Doin' Work our star's game ends early as well but not because of a fight, the Lakers blew out San Antonio allowing Kobe to get some rest. The fourth quarter breaks away from the format and turns into an enjoyable Q&A session between Spike and Kobe.

The DVD offers two versions of the film, allowing you to watch the uncensored film featuring the four-letter words "The Worldwide Leader" couldn't air. Aside from this "dirty version," the DVD's extra features are weak. If you saw Kobe Doin' Work back in May, there isn't much difference here from the original broadcast except for maybe a few instances of Kobe saying "shit" or "motherfucker" and deleted scenes from the fourth quarter of this one-sided ball game. If you missed this Spike Lee joint the first time around, you might want to throw it in your Netflix queue. It's worth at least one viewing, especially if you're a Kobe fan.

Kobe Doin' Work directed by Spike Lee starring Kobe Bryant is available now on DVD.

Los Angeles Plays Itself @ The Egyptian
This phenomenal documentary isn't available on DVD, so if you are a fan of Los Angeles, and taking a look at its psyche and image through film, go, go, go, go to The Egyptian tonight at 7:30 p.m. to catch this screening. Director Thom Andersen has assembled an epic quantity and sampling of movie clips, plus wry narration, to look at the city in a whole new way. Be warned--it runs 169 minutes...but it's so worth it! And: Don't forget there's going to be major street closures in the area due to the Hollywood Christmas Parade, so scout an alternate route, or take the Metro; the Theatre suggests approaching from the South. ($10)

The event, dubbed "Eat My Blog," happens on December 5th at the WeHo location of Zeke's Smokehouse [LAist Review], and was put together by Gastronomy Blog's Cathy Danh.

Expect to have a whole lot of sweet treats to choose from, as "there will be over 600 baked goods including classic whoopie pies, pumpkin swirl brownies, handmade macarons, and black sesame cupcakes with matcha frosting," describes Digital City.
