On Wednesday, local band (and Cobrasnake favorites) The Like (MySpace) reemerged from nearly a year-long hiatus and performed at Club 86 in Hollywood, with a half hour set consisting entirely of newer songs (with the exception of "Release Me"). In attendance were the bandmembers' families (Tony Berg, Mitchell Froom, and Pete Thomas) and friends, which combined with the choice of venue, made this show feel like an intimate "living room" performance. Afterwards, Thomas and...

With the Western Conference Champion Los Angeles Lakers (ahhhhhhh, that's nice) on hold for a week and the Blue Crew in the Big Apple taking on the Metropolitans, there's free stuff in Anaheim this weekend at Angel Stadium. The Angels (32-23) take on the Toronto Blue Jays (30-26) tonight through Sunday afternoon. Every Friday night home game ends with Big Bang fireworks which feel pretty damn close, especially if you're up in the nose bleeds....

Publishers of all stripes are selling books of all types. Jules Asner signed Whacked (she is gorgeous in person), Alan Cheuse signed The Fires, and Garth Stein signed The Art of Racing in the Rain. From fiction and business books to green books and cookbooks (and wine guides -- a bonus for this Wine Novice), writers, publishers and booksellers are hob-knobbing and handing out invites to tonight's biggest book parties. On various panels throughout the...

Last Friday, singer/actress Mandy Moore (MySpace) headlined a sold-out show at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood that included American Pie actor Thomas Ian Nicholas (MySpace) as well as singer-songwriters Curtis Peoples (MySpace), Brett Young (MySpace), and Canadian Serena Ryder (MySpace). During her set, Moore mentioned the Hotel Cafe being her favorite venue for shows in Los Angeles, adopting a new dog named Joni (after one of her idols, Joni Mitchell), and flying the following...

How dope was it that Jack was listening to the Pixies on the "Lost" season finale last night? Word has leaked out that NBC Universal and investment partners have put a $3.5 billion bid on the table for The Weather Channel. Way to jump on the climate change bandwagon. Did the writers at Letterman have an idea this was coming? Here's their Top Ten Signs There's Trouble At The Weather Channel from May 7th. $3.5...

Derek, have you got your cup on? Because I will hit you there. | Photo courtesy of Paramount Vantage These days in Hollywood, ''low budget" films usually end up costing more than the runway rentals to land Steven Spielberg's ego. That's why it's so exciting to see truly low-budget films actually get made without all of the self-examination and scrutiny that comes with the ability to shoot more than one take. And it's even...

Screw this! When's the 'Arliss' movie coming out? | Photo courtesy of New Line Cinema There's really no point in me carping or teasing about Sex and the City since it's obviously not a movie for me. Early ticket sales are showing it to be a surprisingly big hit in its first weekend. Maybe it's success will convince HBO to get off its ass, throw out a big pile of money and put together...

Los Angeles really can be an amazing place sometimes. Where else will an artist the stature and as experienced as Elvis Costello decide to play a secret, free midnight show? Very, very few places. Luckily, we are in Los Angeles and this exact thing did happen Wednesday night. Announcing the show at 7pm on Indie 103.1, Costello came straight from his performance in support of the Police, and proceeded to rock the El Rey for...

It is with great sadness that LAist notes the passing of comedy legend Harvey Korman who died today at the UCLA Medical Center. He was 81 years old. Korman died of complications from an abdominal aortic aneurysm that ruptured four months ago. As someone who grew up during the 1970s, weekends culminated in viewing the "Carol Burnett Show". The singing numbers were endured in order to enjoy the payoff of watching sketches and parodies featuring...

The big story of the night is the season finale of "Lost". The problem for "Lost"-haters, and they do exist, is that there are very few other options this evening. Programming on ABC is dominated by 3 hours of "Lost" and the other majors are throwing just program repeats or reality contests at it. The NY Times reports that TiVo shamed market analysts by turning a nice profit last quarter instead of a forecast...

Brooklyn indie rockers Pela were supposed to play Spaceland back on March 8, but a few days before, frontman Billy McCarthy was injured while playing a gig in Chicago, forcing them to cancel the rest of their tour. The injury occurred during the show's triumphant finale... as the band played the anthemic 'Cavalry' the frenzied crowd climbed up on stage to sing and dance along, and when the disorienting strobe lights started flashing, McCarthy...
