Peruvian Residents of L.A. Would Like to Establish New Neighborhood: 'Peru Village'
Los Angeles is full of tiny neighborhoods with insider names: Thai Town, Little Armenia, Little Tokyo, and so forth. Now, Peruvian residents would like to see the stretch of Vine between Melrose and Sunset given a moniker, too; specifically, Peru Village.
Tania Tapia, a second generation Peruvian American, presented the proposal at a City Council meeting yesterday.
"Our petition requests a recognition of Peru Village similar to Thai Town," she can be seen saying in footage of the event that was posted on Peru Village's Facebook page. "We want to be included in the defined cultural diversity of this cosmopolitan city, that welcomes people from over 140 countries."
Tapia went on to note that the neighborhood already has a few Peruvian businesses and serves as a hub for members of the community to congregate. Having an area named for their cultural group, she said, would also "enable us to have a greater impact socially, culturally, economically...and foremost, giving back to the country that has welcomed us."
The neighborhood falls in Councilman Eric Garcetti's district, and following Tapia's presentation, Garcetti -- speaking in both Spanish and English -- announced his support for the proposal.
