Made in L.A. For Foodies: Try These Goods From L.A.'s Top 12 Food Crafters

Chances are, if you're at all interested in art, you've heard of Made in L.A. 2012, the L.A.-specific biennial organized by the Hammer Museum, which features talented, yet under-recognized local artists. Whether you're still twiddling your thumbs and have yet to check it out or you've already gone, we have another task to add to your list of (cultural) things to do.

ForYourArt will present a one-day-only food biennial called New.Artisanal.Now, presented in conjunction with Made in L.A., which will feature 12 of the "city's finest food crafters selected by culinary insiders Krista Simmons (LAist's own Food Editor and a Top Chef Masters judge) along with Shawna Dawson (Artisanal LA) and Michaele Musel (The Secret Fork). Interested foodies can bring their appetites and sample to their stomach's delight on July 28 at 6020 Wilshire Blvd.

GreenBar Collective will provide drinks, and you can buy special edition tote bags to benefit local food charity Food Forward. Plus, a DJ will be spinning tunes.

Each judge picked four favorites. Dawson picked Le Bon Garçon Caramels, Morning Glory Confections (brittles), Z Confections (salted caramel and chocolate sauce) and Laura Ann's Jams. Michaele Musel chose choc. (gluten free, eco-friendly brownies), Orgasmo de la Boca (smoked olives), Grace & I (fruit presses and preserves) and Roma Chocolates. Simmons chose Susan Finesman @ S.H.R.U.B. Drinking Vinegars, Crème Caramel LA, De Vamore (bacon and date spread) and Peddler's Creamery (ice cream).

Simmons explained her picks:

"I wanted to select producers who embody what it means to be an independent, entrepreneurial, creative spirit. Food crafters like Edward Belden of Peddler's Creamery, whose ice creams are churned on the back of his beach cruiser, and boutique shrub-maker Susan Finesman, who applies age-old, colonial preservation techniques to farm-fresh produce, really showcase that. Aside from the deliciousness of it all, these products are incredibly beautiful from an aesthetic standpoint. This will be a real showcase of food porn, that's for sure."
