A classmate who witnessed the fatal fight between a 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl Friday says the younger girl was kneed in the forehead.

The 10-year-old, Joanna Ramos, died several hours after the fight of blunt-force trauma. The two fifth graders were reportedly arguing over a boy and arranged to meet up in an alley next door to Frances Willard Elementary School in Long Beach during after-school hours. Witnesses say the fight last only a minute. The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports the details of the fight as follows:

She and several other children at the school said the fight ended when the 11-year-old grabbed Ramos on either side of her head, by her hair, and yanked Ramos' head down while slamming her knee into the 10-year-old's forehead, above her nose.

Children who witnessed the fight, which was visible from the school's playground, say Ramos had blood around her nose and lip following the brief brawl. She fell ill after the fight and died hours later at St. Mary Medical Center. Her death has been labeled a homicide.

No charges have been filed against the 11-year-old, but legal experts say preliminary information suggests she could face a serious felony filing that could see her incarcerated until she turns 25. Experts say it is unlikely that she will be charged with murder. Police have yet to release her identity. Investigators are probing whether or not the girls were encouraged to fight by friends.

Ramos' 41-year-old mother, Cecilia Villanueva, is desperate for more information about the incident.

"All I know is just rumors," Villanueva told the L.A. Times. "We keep hearing different things. We heard she was bleeding from the nose after the fight, that she was hit multiple times in the head by this other girl. We just don't know what happened. The only one who could have told me what happened is gone."

The 11-year-old girl has since transferred elementary schools.

  • Can we all agree this is tragic? I hope the school is not taking this as a crime incident and using this as an opportunity to show kids that fighting, especially over a boy, is stupid and can ruin your life.

  • Is there a zero tolerance policy at the school?  Are these type of fights unusual?  Where did these children even get the idea to arrange a fight in an alley after school?   Where was this behaviour  learned?

  • When your 10 or 11 and in a school fight you don't "calculate" your moves, to say she was trying to imitate MMA moves is ridiculous. She didn't mean to kill this girl, it was a school yard fight. Probably wasn't the first one either had, they were just expecting a crowed, a few bumps and bruises and they probably would have been friends the next day if she had lived. That's what kids do. It was an accident.

  • Glad you were there to witness this and know them both personally!
    Did you graduate HS?
Other than that...I think YOUR line of thinking is most ridiculous!
    But what do I know?
I "only" raised 4 children and several grand children...and I come from very long line of educators holding Masters and PhD's!
And am somewhat familiar with the So Calif school systems having several family members who work in this very system.
But, ha...guess my way of thinking is just ridiculous as Gill suggest.
BTW...spell check is very helpful!....just sayin!

  • fuckit654

To say this is anything but an accident is retarded if she had meant to kill her then why did she stop before she was dead. Also they both agreed to fight so depending on who hit first it could be self defense. You need to pull your head out of your ass and look at the real world, kids fight even your perfect grandchildren, doesn't make them bad kids just normal. And if you're going to pick on someone's spelling you might want to remember there is a "g" at the end of saying, but i guess they didn't teach that to the long line of educators with their Masters and PhD's.

  • School district simply transferred this murdering "child" to another school...OMG! Fighting over a boy at 11 yrs old!?
Wondering if these girls were sexually active as she seemed to have much at stake...
This girl no doubt was raised in large family with lots of brothers, perhaps no mother figure?
I can't imagine any of my grand-kids ages 10 and 11 would even yell at another kid let alone pull hair and knee jab in ones forehead.
They know better at this age and even few years younger that head trauma has potential to be deadly..
Kids this age are taught this as basic bicycle safety...for this reason alone, I say this girl knew better and what she did to this younger girl is in fact a homicide!
I hope she gets put away for very long time and given intensive anger management and therapy because she's going to need it the rest of her life!
She should NOT be allowed in ANY school system outside Juvy!
Drastic yes, but look at her victim. She's dead and never coming back! Her life was cut too short and justice needs to be served here.
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth...
Had this been a Pit Bull biting adults it would have been destroyed..
So this little Chihuahua Pachucah needs to be kept in a kennel for very long LONG time!

This is a pure murder.  11 year old is old enough and in control of her mental processes since she is fighting over a boy.  Bring the girl who did it and others on a witness stand and make them speak.  This is the only way to stop this madness.

  • westlafadeaway

hmm I can't agree with the first two sentences there - and this "madness" is human nature...good luck stopping human nature.

  • guestish

"We just don't know what happened. The only one who could have told me what happened is gone."
Well that's not entirely true. There were lots of girls there, including the girl who did it.

  • fracuss

Yes, and we have eye witness accounts of the blow that killed.  Not one that you would expect from an eleven year old girl.  So what caused her to react with such force?

  • fracuss

Grabbed her head and kneed her in the forehead.
Well where did she see that.
The cage fighting and martial arts krap on T.V. should only be shown on the premium channels, and not featured in kids cartoons.

  • SimplyJenna

i'm pretty sure it was just her instinct and adrenaline not television. i have never seen that stuff and when i would fight with my friends when i was little we would do crazy things! i would always end up kicking.. who knows why. shes 11 years old for goodness sake!

  • ARE YOU CRAZY? When I was young, I fought with boys...and they didn't even do that to each other. What kind of a person are you that you can respond to death with such a laissez-faire attitude? Little kids DON'T do things like that to each other. And they absolutely shouldn't. What the h*** kind of parents did the other girl have that she thinks it's acceptable to do that? This situation is an indication that people in general are completely failing. IN LIFE. It's so sad.

    Update:
When little boys are playfighting, they do more extreme moves, but they usually pantomime and don't strike real or heavy blows to each other. This is different. This was a very angry little girl who had no community around her raising her. And we don't do that in this city. We expect little kids to just "figure it out" with no guidance or support structure. Disgusting.

  • David E.

I agree with most of what you said.  However, "communities" don't raise children, parents do.

  • SimplyJenna

this is ridiculous. no i am not CRAZY. yes the death of this poor girl is horrible and sad, but i am just stating that he blaming this on television is stupid. ughhhh where did you get anything else from what i said? she is 11 years old.............. not saying she couldn't be a psychotic murderer, but it's more likely an accident. she probably did not know that her actions would cause the death of the girl....we don't know what was in her head. any ways that's all i've got to say.

  • westlafadeaway

     I'm with you Jenna.

  • fracuss

You would be, but this girls actions cannot just be written off as the norm for 11 year olds.  If it is, then Dog help our society.  And I don't agree with your previous statement that "Inflicting pain by any means necessary is certainly instinctive".  Instinctively we protect ourselves, and when we do strike, we strike with a calculated amount of force.  That is what makes us human and separates us from the other animals on the planet.  At least those of us that are properly wired.

  • I do question calculated amount of force. Even a trained fighter is barely able to contain the adrenaline dump in a streetfight.

  • fracuss

    I'm not buying it.

  • fracuss

Sorry, but I don't accept that grabbing her by the hair on both sides of her head and then smashing her knee into her opponents face...while jerking down her head...is not "instinctive"
    This was not "kicking"..

  • Actually, if you remember how girl fights happened in school, grabbing the hair was pretty common. If there was any kind of height differential one person's head would be much lower than the other. Both hands occupied by the other girl and you'll see it doesn't require any special insight just to knee up. (A modified soccer move.) I'm just suggesting how boys fight in school with modified wrestling and wild punches is a lot different from what girls would do. Luckily most of the time, both girls seem to have a hold of each other and the pain/adrenaline just keeps them spinning around and not doing much harm (except from pulling out hair and weaves and earrings).

  • fracuss

I guess I lead a sheltered life, as I do not recall any "girl fights" when I was in school.  Maybe it was because T.V. was in its infancy!  Of course, nobody was playing soccer then either.  But it does seem that a lot of people are going to great lengths to justify what happened.  I too feel uncomfortable with this girl being charged as an adult, but the intensity of her actions cannot be overlooked.  A jury will decide.

  • westlafadeaway

Inflicting pain by any means necessary is certainly instinctive - I doubt the girl knew this move had a name - she grabbed hair and the only way to strike at that point is to use knees since you're too close to kick.  It's a terrible story but absolutely stupid to try and pin it on something from the television.

  • fracuss

First I would like to thank you for showing your level of intelligence by calling me "stupid".  Having said that, you certainly lack a certain amount of compassion and intellect.
Beth Ann (below) has it right.  When I was a kid, we used to do the Professional Wrestling holds on each other, but not to the degree that it would inflict injury.  This girl has issues, and they must be dealt with.  Would you like to have her in the classroom with your child?

  • Paul

    In jail until age 25?

That seems a bit harsh, I' *hope* neither of these girls wanted to actually kill the other one, but just cause harm, because after all - it's a fight between a 10 year old and an 11 year old.
