Dunkin' Donuts IS Coming to California! So Where Will the First Location Be?

LA Snark pointed out yesterday the news that Dunkin' Donuts, the beloved donuts and coffee chain, is in fact opening in California, and their first location will be at Camp Pendleton.

The item was first published by the Boston Business Journal, who explain they got the intel from a friend's Facebook posting (of course!) and confirmed the news from Camp Pendleton's food service Facebook page (of course!). Here's what they found:

Today, a friend from Massachusetts who lives at Camp Pendleton - his wife is a military doctor - excitedly posted on Facebook that the San Diego country military base would soon be getting a Dunkin’ Donuts.

Lo and behold, the Facebook page for MCCS Camp Pendleton, the food service there, included a job posting that read:

“Want to be a part of the 1st Dunkin’ in CA? Looking to Higher Management positions! Please contact us at firstcupjobs@yahoo.com”

The Camp Pendleton DD could signal the chain's start of a larger franchise foray into California, long-considered by the donut company as being harsh waters to navigate...and dominate. Recently, Dunkin' Donuts declared they were going to work on their total domination of our consumer tastebuds, though, with their eye on taking over from Starbucks as the most ubiquitous coffee-and-treat retail option in the country.

  • YAY!!!!  Best doughnuts ever.  I can't stand the krispy kreme type that are basically just fried dough with sickeningly sweet goo on top (although they do smell good).  I love DD's cake style doughnuts.  Toasted coconut!  Old-fashioned cake with chocolate frosting!  Blueberry!  Mmmm.

And FINALLY, delicious, reasonably-priced coffee that doesn't eat a hole through the lining of your stomach (ahem, Starbucks), and has lots of caffeine in it!  Stupid Starbucks coffee snobs don't realize that dark roast coffee has much less caffeine than the milder, mellow style that Dunkin Donuts serves.

Do they still offer "The Big One"?

  • Dunkin' Donuts are about as good as some supermarket donuts. Not as good as Entenmens tho. They can't hold a candle to the average mom & pop place. And their coffee is pitiful

  • SCOTTIE DIABLO

Dunkin Donuts existed in Southern California in the 80's. Glad to hear they're coming back.

  • thought Dunkin' Donuts have been here in CA for a looooooooooooong time already. I used to seem em from time to time..oh well

  • So this was "confirmed" via a Facebook posting? Can I go on record as calling bullshit on this?

  • Dunkin donuts are filth.

  • calwatch

If you take the 395 bus from San Clemente, you can actually get on the base as a member of the public. The guard checks photo ID of everyone at the gate and makes sure they aren't a fugitive, but you're free to move about once inside.

  • Sniffy

pretty sure Dunkin was here in the 80s when I was growing up.
not sure wut happened, but they are not the best...

  • E.

They were. I remember seeing them growing up in San Diego. Early 80s. Closed down because the Mom & Pop donut game in California was pretty fierce at the time and they needed to restructure.

    fat girl reply.

More than likely this is a master concessionaire on the base who licensed DD's name and menu, and has no intentions of opening anything anywhere off the base.

  • Dunkin Donuts are awful. Krispy Kreme donuts are like a billion times better. And I have readily available access to both in NYC.

  • Nate Barlow

You're kidding, right?  Krispy Kreme are crap compared to DD.

  • Not kidding. I totally do NOT understand why anyone would even go to DD. Their donuts and coffee are gross. And apparently most Californians agree because DD used to be in the state and pulled out because of bad sales.

  • The Shockwave

KK are truly the worst donuts that I've ever had anywhere... ever.  I'm even including donuts from the supermarket.

  • Camp Pendleton?

Not if Michelle "Donuts for me but not for thee" Obama has anything to say about it...

  • dantsea

BILL CLINTON! *waves fingers in front of face*

  • What does that even MEAN?

  • Lot of midwest folks live in CA now. They will totally dominate because they're the best donuts ever.

  • E.

    oh my god FINALLY.

  • that says it all
