John and Ken (KFI)
Radio shock jocks John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou are slated to return to the airwaves today following a brief suspension for calling Whitney Houston a "crack ho." And quite a few people are none too happy about their restoration, including loyal fans of the late singer and black leaders.

The controversial duo will resume their KFI post in Burbank today at 3pm, and Houston fans are expected to stage a protest - rain or shine. Protest organizer Darren Johnson told EURweb, "John and Ken not only disrespected Whitney Houston and her family by calling her a crack ho, but black women everywhere. To think that they are coming back on the air after just a ten day suspension is ridiculous."

In case you missed the offensive February 16 conversation, you can still listen to it here. The first slur comes at 00:53 with a second to follow at 00:58.

Aside from the protests, KFI will be faced with additional opposition of the return of "The John and Ken Show." L.A. Times reports that leaders of the state's Legislative Black Caucus as well as representatives for the Los Angeles Urban League and the Los Angeles chapter of the National Assn. of Black Journalists will meet with the station's management today "to demand the pair's resignations and more diversity for the station's on-air personalities and newsroom staff." Community activist Najee Ali along with representatives from other similar groups are also planning to attend Monday's meeting.

Sen. Curren D. Price Jr. (D-Los Angeles) said, "There are many thoughtful and talented journalists in Southern California. KFI-AM needs to replace John and Ken with some of them. I'm sure their radio sponsors will be grateful."

"The John and Ken Show" airs weekdays from 3pm to 7m and is the most listened to local talk radio program in the nation.

Whitney Houston's problems with drugs and alcohol are well documented. Unfortunately, the black community doesn't like it when people tell the truth about their community. Al Sharpton went on CNN the night Whitney Houston died and proclaimed that she "turned tragedy into triumph". It was like he didn't realize home girl was dead from drugs.

Whitney Houston was wasn't even relevant the last 15 years.  John & Ken served their ridiculous suspension. End of story.

  • Wow, that was wild what they said. People need to be careful about what they say about others because it always comes back to bite. John and Ken might not be the ones bitten, but it can get the family. Brothers, sisters, and even their children can get caught up. We should not gloat at the expense of others because it will come back and it does not feel good.

  • Welcome back to the radio guys. And to the politically correct mob: FU

  • Spokker

I was listening to them tonight. They are pussies for apologizing as Tom Leykis explained, but they are still great radio professionals who know how to put on an interesting show. But I won't be listening once Leykis is broadcasting on the Internet in April.

  • calwatch

And as you also explained John needs money to keep his kids through private school and feed his overbearing wife. He has to apologize if he doesn't want to get tossed from the house.

  • What will we tell the children when they ask why are John and Ken on the radio?

  • Rather startling that people still listen to AM radio

  • Spokker

Startling that anyone listens to any kind of terrestrial radio anymore. The radio business is in dire straits.

  • ShakinBoots

Talk about an overreaction. There is a lot of energy and resources being used to try to turn their comments into something racial. It only works to discredit the groups involved in this "protest". I will definately be questioning the facts the next time I hear of any further protests these groups are participating in. Given the blatant fact that calling someone a "crack ho" is NOT in any way, racial.

Everyone's so protest happy these days, they automatically think they're doing good regardless of how lame their claims are.

I'm just as against racism as the next person, but this is just ridiculous.

Calling Whitney Houston a “crack ho” is not racist. She was a great singer but she was also a junkie and not someone I would want my kids to look up to. I didn’t see any media coverage of people protesting Chris Brown after he physically assaulted Rhianna and no one signed petitions and mailed fake nipples to Janet Jackson after she suffered a “wardrobe malfunction”.

I’ve heard rap songs so full of racial epithets I couldn’t stand to finish listening to it. Stating facts is not racist. If the toxicology report comes back (if it hasn’t been released already) that she had drugs in her system, especially crack, then she *IS* a ‘crack ho’ and she *died* a ‘crack ho’.

The only part of this whole thing I find racist is how several African American Coalitions and Organizations have gone out of their way to specifically target Caucasians that they don’t like or who have offended them while forgiving people of their own race for assault, battery, drug use, and so on for no other reason than the offenders who are forgiven also happen to be black.

If a “white” organization even attempted to do the same thing to a “black” celebrity… I don’t even want to think about the media circus that would ensue.

Also, in closing, I think that the sentence that points out that the “John and Ken Show” is THE MOST LISTENED TO LOCAL TALK RADIO PROGRAM IN THE NATION.’ *might*, just *might* explain the 10 day suspension in lieu of firing. It’s called show BUSINESS folks. I’m not in it myself, but I can’t imagine you’d get rid of that kind of revenue if you had a choice.

Since when is "Crack Ho" a racial slur?   I have seen "Crack Ho's" of ALL races??

Anna Nicole Smith was a "Crack Ho" as well.. oh yeah she was white so thats OK?

Seems like the black racist machine has a guilty conscience???

  • mypov123

Did these two clowns refer to Anna Nicole as a "crack ho" after she died? What about Heath Ledger, did they call him names?  I highly doubt it. "John and Ken" are nothing but a couple of ignorant bigots.

  • Guest

And Whitney Houston was nothing but a crack ho.

  • Tell those inner city scum of color to blow it out their black asses. Houston was a drug addict. That's why she's dead.

  • ETBerry

You don't know why she died.  No one does.  Perhaps you should keep quiet until the facts are revealed.

  • John Sloan

We may not know how she died..  But we DO know how she lived (CRACKED OUT OF HER MIND)

White or Black   FACTS are FACTS

  • ETBerry

You cannot know how she lived.  Just as I cannot know how you have lived.  "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

  • her life was an open book

  • ShakinBoots

I appreciate your loyalty to her, but Whitney herself told the world in interviews how she was living and what drugs she was addicted to. It's true we may not know the cause of death yet, but that's really not the issue here. The point that was being made is that she did live as an addict, sad as that is. There's no point in defending that.

  • ETBerry

You are mistaken.  I am not defending her out of loyalty.  I am simply stating that she was a human being -- a daughter, mother and friend.  What would be your reaction if someone spoke of your mother, daughter or friend in such terms?  Many people have problems with substance abuse -- it is part of the human condition.  We all know someone who has that problem.  That doesn't mean that  people who suffer in that way should be treated with such disrespect and indignity.

  • ShakinBoots

Of course I agree with this, but it's not what you were saying in earlier comments. You've made several comments defending her drug use. While it was insensitive to call her a "crack ho", the statement was not racist and other than being in poor taste, it was not entirely untrue. As I said, Whitney told us herself of her drug abuse. Sad but true.

  • her tragic death is also an example of what not to do.  She is not a role model

  • They reported what was the truth. Maybe they didn't use pretty words, but everything they said was true.  It's sad, yes, that WH died young, but she caused her own death with irresponsible behavior.  Not everyone is going to react the way her family and friends do - people see it from different points of view--reporter's, friend's, family, observer, etc.  She really ought to be used as an example of "what not to do."

  • ETBerry

You know the reason she died?  You must be either clairvoyant or a liar since no one knows yet why she died.

  • she died of drugs and alcohol mixed

  • dorkuser

They are not going to remove them , this wasn't their first racial outburst , and won't be their last . screw them twenty years from now people are still  gonna remember Whitney Houston . These two pinheads when they die they won't even get full coverage just the local LA times  .I didn't know who they were until this racist outburst made headlines let  them be . what goes around comes back around  and those two jerks will soon discover that.

  • ShakinBoots

There was nothing racist about what they said. Disrespectful and inconsiderate? Maybe. Nothing racist about it and anyone who tries to make it racial needs to grow a thicker skin and refocus their energies.

  • joyce_sanders83

A radio personality should act as such...When working in a profession where so many people can be impacted by your chose of words and topic of discussions...You should be careful! No matter what race you are! Sure of the clock opinions are like assholes!Everyone has 1..but when companies are paying you to work professionally there are regulations to be followed for that pay check....I don't think KFI can afford the bad publicity or law suits!!No matter what race or culture we are...We simply must be smarter in the actions which we choose....!

  • "Black Journalists will meet with the station's management today to demand the pair's resignations and more diversity for the station's on-air personalities and newsroom staff."
Radio is the least discriminating medium out there! Tavis Smiley and other black broadcasters I admire earned their position at the mic. To demand that the airwaves have more diversity by imposing racial mandates is silly.

  • Truth is the best defense. Yah, WH was a talented singer, a lovely black woman, but she was also a junkie, crack user and not a role model for anyone, black or not.

  • HeatherBGrey

this is retarded! Why didn't this group protest Chris Brown at any of his shows/performances/award ceremonies post Rihanna's ass kicking? LOL at 'John and Ken not only disrespected Whitney Houston and her family by calling her a crack ho, but black women everywhere.'
It's only because they're white that's why it's sooo controversial. If they were black it would be ok. Rappers drop 'ho' and 'bitch' every 5 seconds in their songs. If equality organizations want people to respect all women everywhere, they need to distribute their protests universally, viz, anytime a woman or person of color is disrespected by anyone regardless of the offender's color.

  • Yeah!  John and Ken are back! They are the only reason I listen to L.A. radio.  I've been looking forward to their return for two weeks.  I suspect their popularity will double after this.  No such thing as bad publicity.  I spoke to a few people who had never heard of them before and now will be tuning in today.
