Pencil This In: Literary Death Match, 'Trouble In Paradise' At The Grammy Museum, $5 Margaritas & A Controversial Doc

Happy National Margarita Day! Quell that Fat Tuesday hangover with one of many local events shaking up the sprawl this evening. If you're feeling like film, Film Independent and Atwater Village have you covered. Prefer a little literary lashing? Literary Death Match returns with a fierce foursome. Both the Grammy Museum and The Thirsty Crow will bring music to your eyes and ears. And if last night's celebrations failed to satiate, El Carmen has your $5 poison.

FILM TALK
Film Independent's 11th annual Directors Close-Up series continues tonight at The Landmark in West L.A. with "The Independent Spirit: A Directors Roundtable." HitFix Editor-in-Chief Greg Ellwood will moderate the intimate discussion detailing the film careers of 2012 Spirit Award Nominees, including Mike Mills, writer/director of "Beginners" and "Thumbsucker," and Jonathan Levine, director of "50/50" and writer/director of "The Wackness." A reception will follow the panel. 7:30pm. Early pricing is now closed, but member rates are still available. $40 for non-members. The series lasts through the beginning of March.

LITERARY DEATH MATCH
Literary Death Match returns for round two of 2012 at Busby's East for a judged competition of four fierce scribes. Writers Ned Vizzini ("It's Kind of a Funny Story"), Steve Abee ("Johnny Future and The Bus: Cosmic Ejaculations of The Daily Mind in Transit"), Antonia Crane (representing SLAKE journal) and Michelle Haimoff ("These Days Are Ours") will compete for the Literary Death Match crown. Find out more about tonight's event here. Doors open at 8:15pm. Show starts at 9:05pm. $7 in advance. $10 at the door.

MUSIC EXHIBITION*
"Trouble In Paradise: Music and Los Angeles, 1945-1975" opens today at the Grammy Museum as part of Pacific Standard Time. The seemingly epic exhibition explores pop music scenes of L.A. and related culture, politics and popular art via iconic period images, a cross-section of ephemera, music and filmed interviews with key figures of the scene. "Trouble In Paradise" zeroes in on the SoCal paradise myths and the realities of social struggle that existed during the years following WWII. Featured music genres include surf rock, Watts jazz and funk, Central Avenue R&B, Laurel Canyon folk rock, the Sunset Strip rock scene and the East L.A. Chicano sound. 11:30am-7:30pm. NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY
Who deemed Thursday the thirstiest day of the week? Today is a special day for tequila fans; it's National Margarita Day! Mid-City West's El Carmen, a restaurant that touts itself as L.A.'s premier tequila destination, is celebrating with $5 "Classic Margaritas." 7pm-2am.

DOCUMENTARY FILM
East Side Jews hosts the provocative, controversial film "Between Two Worlds" at Atwater Crossing tonight, followed by a Q&A with award-winning documentary filmmakers Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman as well as artist Elana Mann. Described as "a personal essay documentary about the passionate, and sometimes humorous, culture wars inside America's Jewish community," the film spurred much controversy during a recent screening in San Francisco. 8pm. $15. Tickets should be purchased online. Feeling famished? Dinner is available at Atwater Crossing starting at 7pm.

MUSIC
Look Sessions and USvsTHEM present a showcase of several independent artists, including Josh of Yellow Red Sparks, Emy Reynolds Band, Black Kettle, Ryan Traster, Asleep On The Moon, Pete RG and more, who will deliver intimate, uncut music performances at The Thirsty Crow in Silver Lake via "one mic, one camera, one take." 8pm-11pm.
