A 62-year-old man who called a San Bernardino storage unit "home" was found dead Monday afternoon.

The manager of Extra Space Storage at 155 West Club Center Drive went to check on the man around 2pm Monday after he was missing for several days. The elderly squatter was found dead inside the facility, and police do not suspect foul play.

"There's nothing suspicious," San Bernardino Police Lt. David Harp told L.A. Times. "We think it was medical issues. There was no trauma on the body and we're just conducting what we call a death investigation," he said. Harp told Press-Enterprise coroner's investigators believe the man had been dead three to five days.

City ordinances specify that residing in structures with inadequate plumbing and electricity is prohibited, "but it does happen," said Harp, adding that the unit was likely all the man could afford.

The man's identity has not been released, and an autopsy will be conducted.

  • Sixty-two isn't considered "elderly" anymore.  He would have barely qualified for Social Security.

i know...there are a lot of sad stories out there but this hits me hard - dying alone in a storage unit is so tragic - may he find peace.
