A 70-year-old woman who dozed off while smoking has died after her Pasadena apartment went up in flames.

Firefighters arrived at the scene five minutes after the call around 2am to find the unit in the 300 block of West California Boulevard engulfed in fire, reports City News Service. The victim suffered cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

About 30 firefighters battled and extinguished the blaze in 10 minutes. Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian told City News Service, "The fire was contained to the room and (its) contents, so it was quickly extinguished upon arrival."

Investigators say the woman fell asleep on the couch while smoking, and her apartment was not equipped with smoke detectors. The hallway, however, was equipped, which alerted residents of the fire.

The woman's cat also fell victim to the blaze. Firefighters resuscitated the pet at the scene, but it later died.

The fire caused about $175,000 in damage to the structure and the scorched apartment.
