A mother is in custody today after she abandoned her five- or six-month-old baby boy in downtown Los Angeles early Tuesday morning.

The mother reportedly gave her baby to a homeless couple who had set up camp on the corner of 3rd and Main streets around 12:30am. "The woman apparently ran up to this couple and told them someone was chasing her, handed the baby to them and then ran off," Sgt. Leonard Ramirez, a watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station, told City News Service.

Thankfully, the couple called the police, and officers responded to collect the baby and track down the mother. She was apprehended and is now in custody, and police "still don't know why she left the child because once she learned she was gong to jail, she got pretty hysterical," said Ramirez.

The mother, who did not appear to be intoxicated, will be booked on suspicion of child endangerment. Her baby boy has been turned over to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and will be placed in a foster home.

Nope, too old. Safe surrender only goes up to 72 hours.

Huh, I didn't even think to look at the age.

What sucks is she could've dropped off the baby at the safe surrender site, 1.1 miles away from where she was.

  • Safe surrender is only for babies under 3 days old. =/
