Autopsy Confirms 'Soul Train' Creator Don Cornelius Committed Suicide
An autopsy has confirmed that Don Cornelius, creator of "Soul Train," died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head February 1.
The 75-year-old producer committed suicide around 4am at his home in the 12600 block of Mulholland Drive, located in the hills east of Sherman Oaks, according to City News Service. Cornelius was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Following the February 3 autopsy, toxicology tests were ordered. Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter says the results are not yet available, noting the process could take up to six weeks.
Record producer Quincy Jones said he was "shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague, and business partner" and called the Chicago native "a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business."
Cornelius' son, Tony Cornelius, issued a statement last week requesting privacy and thanking fans, says EW.com. "We thank all the well-wishers and the fans who have supported the Soul Train legacy. Love, Peace and Soul."
