South Pasadena Scores Burbank's Peacekeeper For $1
Sometimes $1 can go a long way, as in the case of a recent Peacekeeper sale by Burbank to South Pasadena.
Primarily used for rescues and barricades between a potential shooter and a resident or police, the Peacekeeper saw little action in Burbank, except during SWAT exercises. South Pasadena Police Chief Joe Payne says his agency is increasing its SWAT training and capabilities, creating a need for the giant armor-framed, gas-powered vehicle.
Having obtained a new BearCat SWAT vehicle in February 2009 through a $275,000 Department of Homeland Security grant, Burbank decided to put the Peacekeeper on the market. South Pasadena officials agreed to take the vehicle "for the price of a McDouble," says Burbank Leader.
The deal, approved by City Council, went down on January 18, and the former surplus from the U.S. Air Force is now in the hands of South Pasadena's 35-officer agency. “In an event that South Pasadena needs to get to a citizen, they have the opportunity to do so," said Burbank Police Lt. John Dilbert. "It's a very good addition."
