Pencil This In: Art in Parking Spaces, Celebrating Beer Can Day and Rebuilding the American Dream

As part of the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival, LAXART presents the third iteration of Art in the Parking Space, a project by artists Warren Neidich and Elena Bajo, at the The Standard Hollywood tonight from 7-9 pm. More than a dozen international and LA-based artists will choreograph with cars, reflecting LA’s car culture in a parking space which represents the theater of the absurd. Free; no reservations required. Cocktail reception by Mezcal Del Maguey.
BEER CAN DAY
Dog Haus Biergarten in Pasadena offers $3 per beer can specials today because it’s National Beer Can Day. It also makes the transition from bottles to an interesting selection of canned beer, ranging from PBR and Schlitz to Dales Pale Ale by Oscar Blues Brewing Co. and Uncommon Brewers Baltic Porter. Customers will also get free koozies today to celebrate the national day
BOOK TALK
Author Shalom Auslander is in conversation with Seinfeld writer/producer Peter Mehlman about Auslander’s highly anticipated first novel, Hope: A Tragedy, tonight at 8 pm at the Skirball Center. Best known for his memoir Foreskin’s Lament, the new novel follows a character who flees his past with a move to upstate New York, while his sick mother reminisces about time never spent in Nazi concentration camps. in the meantime, a pyromaniac burns homes in his new town, and he finds a living piece of history hiding upstairs in his attic. A Q&A and book signing follow the program. Free.
CONVERSATION
The Hammer Museum welcomes Van Jones as it presents the forum Rebuilding the American Dream for the 99% tonight at 7pm. Jones, a former White House special advisor for green jobs, discusses his new “solution-oriented movement” that helps more Americans realize the American dream. His plan includes suggestions to fix the economy, create jobs and restore America’s democracy. The forum will be moderated by Ian Masters of KPFK.
