Internet Blackout: Why People, Including Hitler, Oppose SOPA/PIPA
Netheads, we know you're suffering today as some of the Internet's biggest websites have gone dark to send a message to users and to the House Committee, the group holding a hearing on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) today.
Wikipedia, Boing Boing, Reddit, Major League Gaming and Destructoid have blacked out today to protest both SOPA and the PROTECT IP Act (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 or PIPA) - two bills aiming to crack down on online piracy in support of the entertainment industry. Google even slapped a black bar over their main page logo today in solidarity with thousands of other sites to combat what many feel is censorship.
Today's video lunch features three videos showcasing strong opinions opposing the legislation. In the words of the late führer, "Piracy is a service problem. The way to defeat piracy is to provide a better service than the pirates, not take a shit on the First Amendment!" He added, "You don't get to destroy the Internet because it doesn't fit your business model."
If opposed to SOPA and PIPA, sign the Google petition to "Tell Congress: Don't censor the Web."
