Cheers! It's National Hot Toddy Day
Bottoms up, America! It's National Hot Toddy Day. While the weather in Los Angeles is hardly frightful, it is a bit chilly for we Angelenos who shudder at the thought of a temperature dipping below 70 degrees. Hitting drinkers' lips since the 18th century, hot toddies are a smart beverage to enjoy during the winter months.
A warming and medicinal cocktail, hot toddies are often made with honey, lemon, hot water and a booze of choice. Most hot toddy makers reach for whiskey, brandy or rum, but the choice is yours.
While almost any bar in Los Angeles should be able to fashion one of these steamy pre-Prohibition drinks, regardless of whether or not it is on the menu, you can always stay home and experiment. Punchbowl lists a tasty recipe, which you can view here.
We simply searched "hot toddy" in Los Angeles via Yelp, and numerous reviews popped up. If on the west side today, word on the street is The Tasting Kitchen on Venice's Abbot Kinney Boulevard boasts "LA's Best Bartender" winner Justin Pike, who recently created the Beginner's Luck - his take on the classic hot toddy.
Today is a libation celebration, and though these concoctions were customarily consumed at bedtime, feel free to imbibe at your responsible leisure.
