A call to police regarding possible animal abuse on Tuesday led to the unexpected discovery of a sophisticated marijuana growing operation in Valley Center.

Deputies were responding to a call about a man beating his dog around 3:20pm at a house near Key Creek Road and Dowling Lane, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune. While searching for the homeowner outside the house, deputies noticed marijuana plants inside the residence.

San Diego Narcotics Task Force investigators responded to the scene with a search warrant, and officials uncovered over 100 pot plants along with an irrigation system, grow lights and other necessary equipment to grow marijuana.

The weed plants have a street value of about $300,000, and the growing equipment is worth an estimated $200,000.

Four suspects were detained pending further investigation. Names of the suspects as well as any findings of animal abuse were not reported.
