Police are searching for three robbers who mugged a 60-year-old man and fatally shot his grandson in Sun Valley Monday night.

After hearing yells for help around 6:45pm, Danilo Estuardo Morales, 24, rushed from his home in the 8100 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue in an attempt to rescue his grandfather during a mugging in the home's driveway. The robbers fled toward their vehicle, and Morales chased them. One of the robbers shot Morales in the head.

Morales was transported to a hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

City News Service reports that the grandfather did not suffer any injuries during the attack but was robbed of his wallet and jewelry. Police told L.A. Now that the grandfather had just arrived at the residence when the trio approached him.

The suspects are described as three Hispanic males, ages 15 to 20-years-old. The robbers' vehicle is a "white or light-colored, possibly a Mitsubishi Montero, but definitely a midsize SUV, with a red reflector across the rear, and a punched-out rear window," North Hollywood Division LAPD Lt. Alan Hamilton told North Hollywood-Toluca Lake Patch.

  • My condolences to the Morales family.  There is no need for the mayor's unregulated  'anti-gang' program.   There must be hundred's of youth programs available thru after-school programs,  community activities, Parks & Rec, thru multiple business groups like Lions, Kiwanis and Rotory organizations just to name a few.  Instead, staff the LAPD with the minimum ideal number of 12,000 officers, needed to suppress crimes and gangs.    Putting military soldiers on our borders to help keep drugs from coming into our neighborhoods would be one step in helping to protect American's.   More, and more, and even today, Latin residents of Los Angeles convey to me how dangerous it has become at our Southern borders.  That even, they, won't travel there right now.

He should have left it alone, his grandfather was unhurt, no need to chase after them -just get as much detail on the getaway car.

So sad - especially that teens are armed and aiming for heads.
