Why George Lucas' New Film Took 23 Years To Develop: 'Because It's An All-Black Movie'

"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart welcomed legendary filmmaker George Lucas to Monday night's show to discuss Lucas' upcoming flick "Red Tails." But Lucas didn't just talk about the beauty of movie magic, importance of historic stories or the talented cast, he revealed why the film took 23 years to develop.

When Lucas, who financed the film himself, approached major studios to garner funding for distribution and advertising, they dismissed his pitch immediately. "I showed it to all of them and they said nooooo," Lucas told Stewart. "We don't know how to market a movie like this." Lucas went on to explain the industry. "It's because it's an all-black movie. There's no major white roles in it at all. It's one of the first all-black action pictures ever made."

It's a shame that studios turned their backs on the project due to its certain failure in the foreign markets. Mother Jones describes the film's synopsis. "The movie is World War II-era action flick based on the Tuskegee Airmen, the heroic and decorated pilots who were first black servicemembers to fly combat missions at a time when black Americans were not recognized as full citizens on the United States, despite their willingness to fight and die in its defense."

Lucas also noted why he felt compelled to produce the film. "I wanted to make it inspirational for teenage boys. I wanted to show that they have heroes, that they're real American heroes; they're patriots who helped make this country what it is today."

"Red Tails" is slated for U.S. release on January 20. And, according to Lucas, a prequel and a sequel are itching for production, too.

  • Star wars Fan boys mad because he stopped making star wars movies. lol

  • First of George Lucas is worth over 3.2 billion dollars. Second His movies suck a$$ after the 3rd starwars movie. Third I hope this movie bombs for multiple reasons, many being lies that the media likes to push out about the black airmen who single-handedly won the war. Sick of Hollywood lies and misinformation.

  • First, The media is not saying that "black airmen single-handely won the war." Who said that? Where did they say that? You are making blind conclusions to a movie you have NEVER seen. What George Lucas said is that this movie is showing African Americans had a great role in the war, too. In many World War 2 movies, they show little to NO black people. This movie is showing that there were black people, in the war, and they made great contributions to the war. I was fortunate enough to meet one of these gentlemen. Maybe you should read upon what happen with these men and watch the movie before you jump to conclusions. Prejudice in hollywood still exist and its people like you who don't like the truth. In conclusion, to know that George Lucas movies "sucks ass" after the third star wars movie, that means you cared enough to watch them all. Or are you repeating  what everyone else online is saying? Yea, I figured the exact thing your thinking about right now. Listen to your thoughts, checkmate.

Let me break it down for your idiotic liberals.  In Hollywood, there is no such thing as color; except green, meaning money.  How do you explain Eddie Murphy who was once the top box office draw until he began his stupid movie phase?
Did anyone of you read the script?  No, I saw the previews and it looks cheesy, it does not matter if whites or blacks are in the film.  Cheesy is cheesy.  Why is the picture relased in January, usually the graveyard for new releases.  Remember Hollywood is run by liberals: jewish ones to boot.  And all they care about is money.  If they had Denzel or Sam Jackson and better SPX, mabye it would be a summer blockbuster.  OK problem solved.

    PS

George Lucas is a fine one to talk, aside from the very first Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and American Grafitti, he has made bomb after bomb.  Apparently he knows cheesy.

  • Paul

Are you trying to use logic to explain this? That's crazy - why would you do that.

This is a America man, you have to pull out the race card 95% of the time.

  • There really are 3 sides to this- yours, mine, and the truth. Woman have had the same problem with a minority stigma; the Gays as well. But both have extreme buying power due to their loyalties and lifestyle.

Let's put this to rest by imagining the difficulty getting an all black, all dyke film made!! Lucas might have been wiser to approach HBO, particularly if 2 more films are in consideration, but something of this scale with such historic, and social importance really should been seen on the big screen.

And then there's the little man that all of Hollywood listens to- Thy Name Be Oscar! (which, btw- is really 24K gold foil over dark chocolate- no nuts. "WORK IT!"

  • Paul

Hey everyone, I'm trying to raise 10 million to film a movie about life in Peru.

For those of you who do not chip in - well, you're a goddamn dirty racist.

  • Had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing about 20 of the airmen for a documentary. Said documentary was made more difficult because the army didn't send a lot of military camera crews and fotogs to document their actions, or private press.  No one, back then, wanted to draw attetnion to the unit.

I hope the film is good, anything to drive people to books and other sources on these amazing men.  I can remember things they said to me like I am sitting in front of them now.  A personal and professional highlight in my life.

  • Why is George Lucas, who is looked down upon by blacks the same as any other ' white boy' by black communities, so interested in making heroes of them?! As far as the blacks are concerned anything outside of their race is not worth their time or a thought! The black race has never mentioned anything about the Jewish Holocaust! Throughout the years and endless interactions with blacks I've never once heard ANY black mention one word about the Jewish Holocaust or anything else except what the white man did to them! How sad! They see The Jewish Holocaust as a farce, a lie, as Steven Spielberg had to contend with a group of them after they viewed his film Schindler's List, calling the movie a lie, and the holocaust itself a lie! The blacks claimed it never happened because it tended to overshadow and take everyone's attention away from their history of slavery! Again, how sad!
A number of years ago Schindler's List was being aired on TV during the month of February and was met with rebuttal from blacks who saw this as being ' insensitive'  to ' their claimed month' of black history month! Sad, or so dam what!?
Oprah Winfrey is a living testimony of that when she openly accused White Man of what he did to her people on live television during one of her shows a number of years ago!
Time moves on today, but the black race stays the same in their attitudes and will remind your white grandkids of what you, living in 2012 today and them, tomorrow, of personally having their ancestors in chains and slavery!
Enjoy your continued nonsaga contentions of hearing about slavery every time you turn around!

  • masterjarvis

that is straight up one of the craziest rants i have seen on here ever

  • You are crazy.  You have limited contact with black people but clearly watch a lot of TV which is where you get you notion of what black people think and talk about.  And how riveting your conversations must be with your fellow white people – all those long discussions about the holocaust...

  • aspiringrapper

Lucas is in a position where he feels he can use his status as a fillmmaker to educate.  This is something that's often left out of all but the most thorough history books, or comes up only during Black History Month.  He's bringing it back to the forefront in what will surely be a technically accomplished film with some quality actors. What's wrong with that?

  • dirty 30's

Dominant wasn't looking for any real interaction, they're just here to spew whatever racist bullshit comes to their mind.

  • DonKeysHoTea

depressing to know how many black american school children i've spoken with who don't about the  tuskegee airmen. middle school, high school age- "the who?"
chubby white guy has to teach you your history and get you inspired. nice.

  • Paul

My high school actually brought one of them to speak for us during Black History Month - it was really cool - up until the parents of the Armenian classmates had a hissy fit that our school (which only had 4 black students) had an entire assembly for it, whereas they didn't have anything going on for Armenian Genocide.

We didn't have anymore Tuskegee Airmen come after that.

  • dirty 30's

Exactly! This should be apart of the basic history lesson in schools

  • Darin Gilchrist

I liked this movie better the first time when it was called The Tuskegee Airmen (1996) and starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Oh wait...

  • Paul

I could have sworn I saw that in theaters, but apparently it was made for TV (HBO) and had a limited release.

  • I hope it bombs ONLY for the merit that no one will want a new movie from Lucas unless it's Star Wars Episode 7, 8 and 9.

    or Willow 2.

  • dogbertt

His g/f made him say that.

  • Said the guy who had two rebel pilots of color in all six Star Wars movies and killed them after 3 seconds of air time. I salute you "There's Too Many of Them" and "She's Gonna Blow". You will be missed.

  • xsquatchx

    lando calrissian?

  • Lando and Mace Windu seem like the only two black guys in the entire universe, so that just smacks of tokenism. Especially compared to the crazy racism of Jar Jar, the Trade Federation, Watto, and , oh yeah, the entire cast of "Temple of Doom".

  • soulprovider

Whatever, still doesn't excuse Jar Jar Binks.

  • WOW, Everyone! RACISM RUNS ALL ACROSS THE TABLE!!! Its freakin fact! And sometimes its worse from "Colored" people! And in the Movie industry, quite a few tend to become...Jewish, who are Not of Isreali decent. I wondr why. lol! BUT IT IS BOTH: BUSINESS AND RACISM. Look at ALL THE FREAKIN "hate" Selena Gomez Gets from SO Many Young Fans of Music! They like all other young-like artists...But Not Selena?!!! It spells it self out!

  • s k

I think the real reason why it took 23 years was because George Lucas makes terrible decisions in regards to stories and movies, and no one wants to touch them. Listen to interviews about the original conception of star wars by george lucas. Completely idiotic. Why was the last Indiana Jones so bad? Because Spielberg gave up and let George Lucas do whatever the eff he wanted.

  • Maybe the reason it took Lucas 23 years to get this movie made is that HBO made an excellent film about the EXACT SAME THING. Maybe the executives said, " George, you made Indiana Jones and Star Wars for God's sake. Can't you do better than a rip off of HBO?" Maybe the executives realized that Lucas has become a hack. If you don't believe it, look at what he and Spielberg did to the aforementioned Indiana Jones. I hope this movie does well and surpasses the HBO production, but if it doesn't, it won't be because of an all black cast. It will be because Lucas can no longer tell an engaging, quick paced story in less than 12 hours and thinks too much of himself to let anyone tell him so.

  • My thoughts exactly. And wouldn't ya know it, Cuba Gooding Jr. was in that one too.  I remember watching the trailer for Red Tails in the theatre, scratching my head and thinking, "I've definitely seen this movie before.. right?"

  • ANGRYGOD11

Its a shame racism prevented Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson from ever making it big.

  • dirty 30's

Welp, Samuel L and Will made it!! No more racism in Hollywood!! You can't be serious...

We still have movie studios casting white actors for roles where POC where the characters and you scoff at the idea that Hollywood is racist???

  • dirty has a point. You can count A-list black stars on one maybe two hands. And don't get me started on A-list black or hispanic female stars...

  • ANGRYGOD11

You can count the number of world-wide A-list actors with two hands and maybe one foot.

  • I am talking about the United States. And by worldwide, do you mean known all around the world or A Listers in other countries? Because if you mean "world known" all of them are going to be from American cinema, as people in the United Stated do not care who is king and queen in the Korean or Indian box office. If that doesn't tell you something about the US, nothing will.

  • Still more excited for Django Unchained.

  • Paul

It's not racist, it's financial - think of it like the HP TouchPad. It's a great tablet priced at $500, perhaps one of the greatest unknown tablets up until now - and yet now one knew about it because everyone is all about Apple. They were only able to make a little bit of money after they slashed the price to $99

He said it was an expensive movie to make, and they know it's not going to make money in the foreign market...so not really racist - and like HP, decided to cut their loses and get out of the market(or in studio logic - not even bother with it).

By the way, that clip of the movie was terrible.

  • CheLucero

You didn't explain why it's not racism, you just explained how institutional racism works, and how a racist society perpetuates oppression and racism *by default*.

  • Paul

So you would invest money into something that historically does not sell anyways?

Can I borrow 1 million to film a short about my family in Peru? If you don't lend it to me, you're a goddamn racist.

  • luke_1

Money is an excuse to do anything, right? Hitler had financial reasons too. Damn Jews! Godwin complete. Comments over.

  • This is a very good explanation of how systemic racism works. It's still racism.

  • E.

i had to high five you on that one.

  • ANGRYGOD11

    Bad analogy.
Most techies with money don't buy multiple tablets. But, most filmgoers pay their way to see different films.
BTW, if studios always know what will sell, why do they constantly produce so many money losing turkeys and are surprised by low-budget films that take off?

  • dirty 30's

    Financial stemming from racist reasoning.

  • ProtectTheMiddleClass

Good for you, George. I hope the film is a financial success.

  • PicoPhreako69

And for those who would say America is no longer 'racist', look no further than Mr. Lucas' explanation of why this film took so long to get made.
Bravo George - good on ya.

  • westlafadeaway

I think an argument can be made that the studios weren't being racist (as in white people are better than black people) as much as they were looking for a return on their investment based on patterns of what films have historically been successful at the box office.  At the same time this neither serves as evidence to prove or disprove whether or not "America" (everyone?) is racist.

  • E.

that problem could be alleviated if hollywood actually made decent films with black casts, not that sterotypical borderline "Good Times" type storylines they always want to present.

well see. if this film does well, then clearly we can step our game up when it comes to scripts and stories with/regarding non white casts.

and not everyone in america is racist. just about 70%. about 20% of that 70% thinks theyre not racist, but they are. lmao.

  • ElvisShalit

Hollywood and real people my friend are galaxies apart. Do not look for anything real and true coming from Hollywood. Did you ever think mankind could ever cease to be racist much less America!!??

  • aspiringrapper

Hollywood & George Lucas' production empire are also far apart.

  • E.

Studios havent wanted to touch Black (non white) Casts since:
    1. The Beginning of Time
    2. After The Color Purple was nominated for 13 Oscars, didnt win one.

Also, fuck Tyler Perry, that shit does not count. Nor is it funny.

    That is all.

  • dirty 30's

    Dreamgirls?

  • E.

Nah. Anything with Beyonce is automatically disqualified.
