A new map put out by the city of Los Angeles' Department of Transit (LADOT) gives riders the chance to see our current and planned bikeways. The bikeways come from the bicycle master plan.

So why the new interactive map? "Officials with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation said previous maps showed only existing bikeways and could not be manipulated to also see planned routes," explains L.A. Now.

Ultimately, Los Angeles will be home to 1,680 miles of bikeways.

Cyclists can download three maps in .pdf: Central City & Westside, San Fernando Valley &
Harbor Area. You can also order maps by mail, or use the main interactive map to see where you can ride now, and where you can ride in the future.

  • You guys know there's already a county-wide bike map, right?

While it would be nice to have an interactive map like this that crosses jurisdictional lines and shows other cities, a City of LA-only map is still useful -- especially for those of us who DO care about planning efforts and are interested specifically in holding LADOT and the City Planning department accountable as they go about implementing the 2010 LA Bike Plan. And in that case, it's necessary to know precisely which streets the City is responsible for and which ones it isn't.

Okay.  I wondered why the well-known bikeway down Chandler in Burbank wasn't indicated...  Kinda dumb to do it that way...

  • I agree. Only a planner or politician would care about jurisdictional boundaries. The rest of us will commute through many jurisdictions, and never once think about it.

  • This is really nifty, but I wish there was a version done by the County so it would include bikeways in other cities and unincorporated areas.
