Hanukkah FAIL: Whole Foods on Fairfax Celebrates Festival of Lights with Passover Food

Whole Foods wants to wish its Jewish clientelle a happy holiday this season — except it's the wrong holiday. Heeb Magazine spotted this confused display at the Whole Foods on Fairfax.

The display promised "Hanukkah Favorites" but instead of gluten-free flour for latkes or organic ingredients for sufganiyot, the display offered up the bread of affliction. Nice try, Whole Foods, but matzo is for that other Jewish holiday you might have heard of called Passover. I know you're really confused, but you can keep the matzo display in storage until around the time you bring out the agave-sweetened chocolate bunnies.

  • According to HEEB and a quick Google search, Whole Foods on Fairfax is in Los Angeles, CA.

...somewhat ironically, in a heavily Jewish neighborhood filled especially with old country Russian Jews and, a few blocks over, a whole area of orthodox, many of whom don't have or use computers. This was not a good move on their part. I hope the apology is in more places than this!

  • So Christmas is the time we celebrate Jesus death right?

  • I personally prefer to leave Jesus out of it altogether. It's more about presents, food, and great movies.

On the other hand, matzohs can be used year-round in matzoh crunch.  Definitely an addictive treat, no matter what holiday you're on.

I would of made this mistake trying to impress my Jewish girlfriend... if i had a girlfriend

So, the WF manager made a mistake.  What are you going to do, crucify him?  Oops, my bad.

  • buckguy

WF is, of course, pretentious and overrated and run by a libertarian who wants us to make him look like a philanthropist. They really deserve to look like douches.

  • Where can I get the bacon matzo?

  • Then there is this: the varieties of matzo on display aren't likely kosher for Passover. Usually the egg and onion, whole wheat, and others are for year-round "enjoyment" but aren't baked in a kosher for Passover kitchen. It's a compounded failure.

Hey, Hilary from Whole Foods Market here. Just wanted to let everyone know we’ve removed the matzo displays – color us embarrassed! Sincerest apologies if we offended anyone. Happy Hanukkah!

  • Well, If you saw in my recent questions I asked about help with math and something about me not being able to go to band competition if I failed.
