Where's The 40K Pounds Of Beef? Recalled Due To E. Coli
Nebraska-based Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. is recalling more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef products shipped to several states, including California.
The massive recall of 10-pound chubs of chuck fine ground beef 80/20, packed in eight-chub cases, follows a routine monitoring test that confirmed the presence of E. coli. The products subject to recall have a "BEST BEFORE OR FREEZE BY" date of "11/13/11" and "EST. 245C" on the box label.
Other affected states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
A bacterium, E. coli can cause diarrhea, dehydration and in severe cases, kidney failure. Young persons, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) "advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160° F," according to the recall release.
No reports of illness have been reported, according to CBS LA.
